I agree with you Match Strike. Why judge what someone has to say according to how many green or red boxes they have? And what's with the sayings that goes along with them? "Match Strike attracts all the attention." I dunno. People rep me randomly and I never understood it. I think rep should be used as a way to see how long they have been here or something, not a way to judge the value of their opinion.

Another thing I just thought of; why do negs do half as much as positive reps? That doesn't make logical sense. generally when I dissaprove of something strongly enough to neg the poster, It's because I REALLY don't like what I'm seeing. I'm guilty of positive repping for less of a reason simply because it doesn't promote ill will.

I agree with Match Strike and the rest who've posted here, I also have voiced my opinions in many a thread about it and got what I deserved: a neg. Why should a Colors and Numbers affect the way people think about your posting? I made a new forum account a while back to support my theory ( and many others as well) of rep tarnishing opinions. I posted something with this account and it passed off as a 'respected forumer with a lot of rep opinion'. But when I said the exact same thing with the other account, I was known as an egotist who needed to watch his mouth.

Even though it makes me smile when I login and see a few green reps in the UserCP, it doesn't mean a whole lot to me. And, I agree with Hatchet's point of view: It's always nice to see some red every now and again.

I agree with everything here. In theory it's a way of seeing who you should pay attention to I guess. Also it could be said that if it wasn't reputation it would be something like post count or join date, but the way I see it, it's bad to have something specifically designed to create sort of classes ("have you made the full number of boxes yet?") and to have that system be so fundamentally flawed and open to abuse. Abuse such as what I'm demonstarting by randomly posing or negging people on this thread.

I think I negged you ink, but ironically I find you have very meaningful things to post.

Obviously any system can be abused to a degree, but plenty of systems can and aren't. Why is that?

The account has been inactive for over two weeks, which just means Krome is posting on another account. The neg bomb has begun to see how low he can go. The reputation points that you have don't matter. I could care less what I have. I have problems with those who neg you for no reason at all. If I deserve a neg, then go ahead, I'll take the blame. But when you neg saying: just because I wanted to, is an inappropriate reason. Sure green boxes look nice, but really, they don't give you more say in a matter. Concluding rep is meaningless.

There's aslo the issue of "reputation inflation." It's like stat inflation only worse. I remember how amazing it was when warcow and some other people got up to three boxes and the label said they were diamonds int he ruff. it was a big deal, and it was obvious that they were some of the most respected members. On my original account, "sub the hendrix" It took me over a month of active posting to get to a second box. Not because I was getting negged a lot, but because most reps did one, two, maybe three points.

It's not just jakkers. Almost every clan that has a large forum presence does some form of it. I do it with SI clanmates, but not necessarily because of rep boxes. I'll pos a clanmate just to say hey. I equate it to poking someone on facebook, for those of you who know that site. A lot of my rep is, I don't want to say undeserved, but coming from friends for no particular reason. I will neg or pos someone based on what happened outside of the forums as well, so it really does become about "reputation" and not about post count or join date. If you're well-respected, you will gather a lot of rep. Or you can cheat the system and a run a rep ring among your 3 accounts ... neg Xenon!

I agree with you. I like the rep system in the sense it is supposed to show who the respected members of the community are. There are several reasons why I rep people. Usually it is when I agree with something they say, a cool pic or idea, or a really neat banner or avy. Mostly its if I agree with something or something that REALLY funny. Anytime a system like this is set up, someone will abuse it. I think clans like the Neg Bombers is a good answer for the rep whores. Maybe it will put them back in their place if there is enough particiapation.

Yeah I'm stingy as well, and this is my problem. Last last night I found the imigration thread, and certain people made *excellent* points, and I wanted to show them how very impressed I was with those points (some moreso then others). Yet... my rep just... it's not worth much these days.

It's overinflated, much like stats, or Moose's ego. And this brings me to my point and the reason behind this problem: it's an open "rep economy". Take rep or stats to be equivalent to TAO money. In a better economy, there would be a set amount of money, and the only way for one person to gain it would be at the expense of another losing it (like stats). This is where the mismatch comes in. You need to earn rep starting from nothing, but you give it freely without losing anything. You also need to earn stats (presumably), but you start with 750!! It's like free money! And THIS is why stat inflation exists. The ability to give rep without losing any is why rep inflation exists.

Solution: uniquin stops talking now and let's others respond.

No, but you could make them *earn* the 750 (or however many) stats. Imagine that the noobletts would need to play 10 games before getting their starting stats? It would mean less people boosting off fresh accounts (not that they really can anymore...). It would mean less people trying to get a fresh account in every clan, because clan would then take someone who hasn't even played the bare minimum of games to get stats.

Also, this little system would help people as a learning period, so shooting your units in the back with the scout didn't actually count too much against you.

If you really don't care about rep, then why does it matter if Xenon artificially boosts his?

Anyway (and more to the point) if you want to dismantle the rep system, all you have to do is to hand it out randomly -- neg rep good posts, pos rep good posts, neg rep bad posts, pos rep bad posts, pos or neg confusing posts, etc. If enough people do this, rep will lose its meaning. (Not that enough people are likely to go along with this.) We don't have to wait for the admins to act on this.

Having said that, I do wish that rep were dispensed with. I liked it better when people felt free to flame even the "respected vets" without worrying about getting their reputation shot to hell. I feel like people don't flame me like they used to -- either I'm getting less controversial or people fear my rep power. (I hope to hell its the latter.)

I do like Uniq's idea about having to pay rep to give it. I don't know what would happen under such a system, but it would be an interesting sociological experiment.

Also, I think that I've made a variety of good points here and this post is deserving of much positive rep. :dry:

Anyhow, I will admit that I did not know what those green boxes meant until I had three of them. As I'm still new I was trying to repay everyone back for repping me by repping them. (didn't realize that was wrong at the time.) Fortunately, since I only had approx. 15 posts, it didn't mean anything with the exception of the note that went with the "grey" box that I sent.

I have had some conversations with people and realize what the rep system is supposed to stand for, and because of that, I believe I have only re-repped someone two or three times. Other than that they get it if they say or do something I agree with. As for my reps, it was not a matter of saying "Hey!! Rep me Rep me" I simply came in during the commotion of 12 getting banned and everyone raising hell with about it. I spent about an hour and a half reading all the posts then I posted my thoughts on the subject. That conversation I believe is the only reason I reached the goal that Bottle challenged me too before he left. As everyone has said, yes it does feel good to see another green box in the User CP but I have gotten a few random negs also which those I don't agree with. For example "I don't like teachers" and " I just have a habit of neg repping alternate accounts" If I say or do something wrong then plz feel free to neg me, but don't do it just because your bored.

I have had a couple people ask for reps just to have reps, but they have yet to see them unless they said something worth repping. I looked at my reps as a goal to reach (least amount of posts with max reps) which meant I only posted when I had enough experience/intelligence to posts. Other than that I tried to keep my mouth shut.

No, I think people should use rep for whatever they want. Some people use it to give funny messages or as a way to say hi to people etc, we have it so we might as well use it however we want. It is up to the individuals to decide for themselves what kind of weight they put in someones reputation.

But it DOES have a use, at least to me. Mainly that use is to utilize it as a tool for annoyance. Its really funny watching some of you kids get upset when I neg you. A good number of people can be guarenteed entertainment for a few pm's with a simple neg, plus I absolutely LOVE the idiotic arguments/reasoning brought forth in such exchanges. Its like insight in a retards mind :D

Yeah, unfortunately, I know at least 3 people in the top 20 (who will not be named) that do that. They consider it okay if the other person asks, saying that it is just being polite. In reality, it just invites the person to rep you more often to try to boost their rep from your rep backs. I definately never comply with those that ask for me to get them back. In fact, I look down upon them. I now rarely get people asking me that anymore because I have ignored them all.

Rep has its worths. I like being able to rep someone in place of a PM, just to give a quick comment on something that they've said that I may agree with. Negs come very infrequently from me, and tend to be reserved for what Goethe termed as 'agressive stupidity'. Typically though, agressive stupidity earns its own reward, just think of the Darwinian Awards...

Well, I think I'm only going to post once on this topic. Anyways, I think many people say "I think rep is stupid, blah, blah, blah . . .", but they truly do care about it. And, I'm not saying Match Strike here. I'm talking about newer members who happen to acheive 11 boxes in a week. I've read some of these posts and some truly make me laugh. I can tell many posts are sincere about not liking rep (Match Strike), but others are just truly funny. I like reputation. I see many abuses in it, and that's sad. But, everyone knows that your personality isn't going to be judged on how many green boxes you have. :rolleyes: Rep is good when it is used correctly. As KB said, I rep sometimes saying "Hey", not to get return rep, but to say "Hey." Saying hey might come across as just randomly giving rep, but when I rep "Hey" it's only when I like the post. I don't actully say I like the post, but I do. Rep is rep, it's part of the forum. Why worry about it?

I agree with Match Strike and the rest who've posted here, I also have voiced my opinions in many a thread about it and got what I deserved: a neg. Why should a Colors and Numbers affect the way people think about your posting? I made a new forum account a while back to support my theory ( and many others as well) of rep tarnishing opinions. I posted something with this account and it passed off as a 'respected forumer with a lot of rep opinion'. But when I said the exact same thing with the other account, I was known as an egotist who needed to watch his mouth.

Even though it makes me smile when I login and see a few green reps in the UserCP, it doesn't mean a whole lot to me. And, I agree with Hatchet's point of view: It's always nice to see some red every now and again.

Let them still use it as a short message system, but remove the ability to see how much rep a user has.

I especially love all the posts about how much rep I had as Xenon and that is a small amount to what I have these days but that doesn't matter.
I agree I was a rep whore back then but now no matter what people may have said or still do say perhaps I am no longer a rep whore.
Rep is stupid. When I saw the new changes I had been hoping rep was reset or disables but my hopes were ashcanned.
I still do think that negs with absolutely reason at all is retarded, but, if I have been stupid or whatever and get negged for that then no matter, I deserve it.
Though, it is funny how people still think I rep boost because of my rep level. For all I care they can think that, I know my conscience is clear.

I too agree with the first post and the bit about me is kinda funny.
But about the row of 2nd "lighter" boxes that seems stupid and actually not do-able as it were, vBulletin allow up to 11 green boxes but as many titles as you want and there is no limits to how much rep a person can have. Though if the rep system is going to stay some new rep titles might be in need. The only problem with that is that a few people including myself will probably already have the titles because of the amount of rep we have. Also the other problem would be the rep-whores who are already immortal will be like "oh new titles, I must get people to rep me so I can get there" etc. But immortal pretty much spells it out but you could have things like "user is legendary" or something.

Simple solution, make rep unviewable. Let them still use it as a short message system, but remove the ability to see how much rep a user has.

That seems like a good idea yet a little pointless. You might aswell remove the rep system and leave it to PM's for people to discuss how good or stupid a persons post was. I also believe that this function isn't possible to do either.

People are accusing me of rep whoring just because I am near 40000 in the short time on being registered as Jax'D. Meat and I had a long conversation about it yesterday and he looked at it from a mathematical view and said it doesn't work out and it's true, it doesn't. I would have to have around 4500 posts for it to work out correctly according to meat and I agree. I know I have a huge amount of rep in just a short time, but, as meat and I said I may have promoted rep whoring a bit by someone repping me, I rep them back and it goes from there. I am not that tight with giving out pos reps like a lot of people in say the top 10, though I am going to be now. I do not see the crime in repping someone back if they rep me or if I rep them then they rep me back, I don't actually see whats wrong with that. But I spose when it happens multiple time it can be classed as rep whoring. For all I care neg me to hell for being stupid with reps because frankly I couldn't care less. Just thought everyone should know this whether it destroys the reputation I have managed to build back up again or not (I am not talking about numbers and green boxes).

The solution is just to get rid of positive rep, and only leave the negative rep. Thus, everyone will start slowly losing rep until everyone has none (sure, a few will have a lot of red boxes, but that can't be helped and they probably deserve them anyways) EVeryone's neg giving powers will slowly diminish as they lose rep.

It avoids the nasty mess of the sudden shock of a sudden reseting or elimination of rep, and would probably take a lenghty amount of time to topple the leading people in rep.

Plus it would be fun.
