View Full Version : Bringing back Gold Drops?

I was talking about this the other day with some co-workers which i just so happened to get addicted to this game  anyhow we were talking about some of the pieces that golds get because i was on my account on GL. I told them there was a period of time where they would drop certain pieces that golds get access to. Well to get to the point. I know this may be sensitive issue for a lot of members as there was a HUGE uproar when it first happened, but maybe bring back Gold Drop's for 1-2 months out of the year.

I know for me it was sweet to get a furgon or frost on my grey plus it was a lot more challenging when getting jumped by grey's with certain gold pieces. Yes i may be crazy and yes i know there's legends but im not asking for this to happen every month or even consecutive months, but just every now and then. It may be accepted and maybe not. Just thought i'd see how everyone else would feel about it.

the gold drops were massively protested and removed within a week or two of their implementation here, and there's not exactly an intrinsic benefit for TAO to allowing even a temporary return

I sincerely doubt they'll ever be re-instituted. There is always Rev of course.

There was supposed to be a new server, which I'm kinda doubting now, but if they gave gold drops to that server alone, I don't think there would be any complaints... Well any complaints that mattered. I was going to suggest give it to one of the current servers, or give a diffrent gold drop to each server, but I know either way the members would bitch.

Go to Legends... they have certain Gold units dropped there daily. (And by Gold units I mean the units that are only for Gold use here, but everyone knows that Legends is a ad bit different...)

EDIT: Though the gold drops would be cool to have, it would bring an unnecessary imbalance to grey accounts. It'd be horrifying for me to get jumped by a grey with golems and such on GL, Banff or Army.

The only possible argument for this would be that it would give greys the taste of being "gold" if only for a short while. Once they get whiped, they might want to get back whatever units they lost, and might go gold.

I don't play grey on FPS anymore, but on legends i have a ball with the few gold units that I have gotten. I know suggestions are normally suppose to benefit golds instead of greys, but you wouldn't have any golds unless they were grey first. And if it's only a few months here and there, I think it would be a good idea.

and boogie, read before you post, he already mentioned legends.

Go to the Play Now page... then look for the "Looking for Legends?" button. You get gold drops on a grey account there. The only thing is, they aren't considered gold drops over there. Their unit system is a little different than ours here. Legends was the original server for TAO. They also don't get grey wipes.

The key is cost vs benefit. How many golds would you lose because they could get some gold units in drops vs how many they might gain?

Personally, the only reason I'd play gold was for units. Take away that advantage, even slightly, and I have no incentive to stay gold. Obviously thats not the case for everyone, but the idea is that if enough people protested the concept last time I'm not alone (or likely even a minority) on that line of thought.

Exactly. Why do you think Legends gold costs considerably less (in the long run). Because the value of being gold decreases if you can win some of the units without paying. The wipes make it a different situation for grays, but the principle still holds true.

Gold unit drops only occur in a place that doesn't exist, and we intend to keep it that way.

True true, but this time things are different.

The chance of getting a gold unit is slim, as they are, or should be more rare as drops are concerned. Likewise, if you do get a gold drop, or say a few, yes, the benefit of golding has decreased, that is, until the wipe comes. That's the difference at legends, golds are cheaper there because greys get drops AND are not wiped. But if you notice something, there are more golds logged on at legends then any of the FPS servers. I don't want to play causation/correlation, because that could be for any number of reasons.

All i'm saying is more greys might want to go gold if they are going to lose their drops, and won't have a chance to get them back next month, as gold drops wouldn't happen every month.

I think that it would get a lot more greys to go gold, then golds to go grey.

Like I said at the first post, good luck with that concept. The community as a whole made its opinion clear last time it was brought up.

Its not a theoretical debate, as we've actually seen the response as the community. If golds as a large majority don't like it, TAO isn't gonna disrupt their current customer base off of a "maybe," which is all that we can largely give.

They should put it back for one week so I can make my second frost golem form <_< And use it regularly lol.

Gold drops would also mean an almost complete loss of the real gray game. Dropless gray is one of the most awesome and different game types, but people would stop playing it so much if it didn't really exist naturally anymore.

Nothing wrong with asking for a no-drop grey game, just like asking for a turtle game.

But mega is right. It just ain't gonna happen as there are far more who favor things the way they are, than those who are pro-changing it.

Oh well.

I don't know I just felt one of the main reasons there was such a huge issue about it originally is that it was so unexpected. Now if we were all to know that (of course this is an example) every March and September there would be gold drops. It might be embraced more so than it was. Im not going to quote any of you as you all had great points.

For starters i seriously doubt that we would lose any golds because we would know that after march the drops wouldn't happen for several more months and any remnants of greys with gold pieces would be long gone. And i have to disagree with you on the whole "loss of the dropless grey game" Monkus. Before you get upset realize I also play on Legends where there are no wipes and there is Gold Drops, blah, blah, blah. Ive heard it all before. But there and even here as well there were still greys that continue(d) to play the sacred no drop form.

I know how most people felt at the time and everyone was pissed off ti high heaven about greys getting golds especially you monkus. I actually remember you talking about you playing some grey who had either a frost or furgon and how they were all disrespectful towards you because of that 1 gold piece. But back on point no one knew at the time how long the drops would last and i feel thats what made everyone so upset about the whole thing.

No. People are against the gold drops because of what they are, not because of how they were implemented.

Regardless, with gold drops, a dropless gray has a lot harder of a time to succeed. He must beat drop-enhanced grays and golds, and has few other dropless players to play with.

No. People didn't want gold drops because they were bad. It has nothing to do with how people act or how long it lasts; we don't want gold drops here.

If you think it's just the ruin of the gray game, you're wrong. That was one of many reasons why I dislike them. Here are a few more:

1. Multiple frosties unbalances the game. A two or three frosty anti does a lot better against a rush than a one frosty one may. Even worse, an anti with two or three frosties will rarely lose to a turtle with few attackers. Turtling loses its merit when it almost automatically loses to antis.
In general, more gold units than the standard changes the gold game entirely. All of these changes are unfavorable.

2. Gold drops are simply something that distinguishes us from legends, like our second scout. Many players feel as if they want a choice: if they want gold drops, they pick legends; if they want standard gold games, they stick with fps.
