I voted paranoid, I think the man was racked up in his tennis match and didn't want your father to gain an unfair advantage that he could not understand.

I once took pictures of my friend's pole vaulting match. I took a cool picture of him airborne directly over the bar. I showed him the picture and the judge screamed "no photo review!", then asked me to leave. I think my case is simular to yours, because they were sporting events where private converse was misunderstood to be cheating.

I think it is just a paranoid sports thing to keep things fair for all competitors.

I think both. He's just paranoid that you may cheat, but also maybe a bit racist. Maybe he was just mad about something else or having a bad day and you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In no way do I approve of what the man did, but I think he was just being uptight. He may have went too far becuase it's only a tennis match. I play tennis and even then, anything you told him couldn't effect his game dramatically because he's old enough to understand what to do. I think he may have went too far, but I don't think he did it just because of the way you spoke/the language you spoke. If your dad is playing in a league you he may want to go to the commissener/person in charge and make him aware of what happened.

I see no racism there at all.

It makes sense that he would question what you were saying, since he obviously doens't speak Chinese. But he shouldn't have kicked you out. Sure, you did nothing wrong, but he couldn't have known that. It's slightly paranoid, but not that much. Although you're only 14, you never know what the guy was thinking. But I really don't see racism there.

For those of you saying it's racism: The same thing would have happened to me if I was phoenix and someone quietly asked me a question in English. If the guy couldn't hear it, he wouldn't know what was going on. I'd probably be asked to leave too. There probably would have been some sort of racial slur thrown in there if he was a racist.

You can't label everyone's actions against a minority group as racist. I hate when people do that, and it happens all of the time.

Pheonix... You're upset cuz he was an asshole, and you're trying you best to reason through WHY he was an asshole. You can to the conclusion of racism, when the fact is there is no reason at all.

I would imagine if you were the same race as him but used sign language, you would have gotten the exact same result. What happened was you clearly both knew english, and purposely used a secondary language. From his point of view, it was taken as you trying to hide something. He was stupid for assuming that. However, you shouldn't jump to assumptions of racism either.

It sucks, I understand why he upset you, you have every right to be hurt but... it just wasn't racism.

Note: this is very related to cruel and unsual, but that thread has lost it's subject so i decided it would be more efficient to start a new one.

After my team tennis season ended, ive been going to my dad's mixed double games in ALTA to cheer him on. Today was no different. I went to the game, and it wasnt starting good. my dad and his partner were losing 0-3 (sets to 6 2 out of 3). My dad asks me a question in chinese, i answer, and the opponent walks over to me. he then starts yelling at me and accusing me of illegal coaching in a different language and tells me to leave. after a second when i hadnt budged he screamed LEAVE!!!!

i walked away, very mad at him. my dad, who was very pissed that his son couldnt harmlessy watch him play tennis, won 12 games in a row to win the match 6-3 6-0.

in the end i was VERY mad at the man but didnt call him racist or anything.

Please vote whether u think this man was racist or just paranoid that i was coaching. do not vote anything just to spite me, or i will neg you (this is SERIUS)

This sounds more like a case of really bad ignorance on this other guys part. It seams, looking at his behaviour towards you, that he takes the "game" of tennis WAY too seriously.

Honestly, I dont beleive that this guy meant to be deliberately raciest. I think it was a case of his own ignorance to see beyond his own kind of culture. If he was losing the game it was probable that he was looking for a cheap way to win or for a way to distract your dad.

Either way, he sounds like a complete moron, and that shouldnt be your problem. The problem lies with him, being unable to speak your language, being unable to accept any language that is different to his own, and being unable to accept anything different from what he is.

I can see why you feel upset at this, but none of what happened was your fault. The USA is a multi cultural place, with loads of people from different backgrounds. If he can only accept 1 part of that then I really pitty the sheltered life that this guy will live. I wouldn't give it a second thought, the problem lies with this other guy, not you or your dad.

There are two points in this quote.
1) Your use of the word "Americans" in the plural again strengthens our claim that you are just ignorantly assuming everyone here is American without actually knowing anything about us. Previously when I pointed this out you claimed you were only speaking of Jeffery, but your clear use of the plural says otherwise. You assume based on your preconcieved notions - welcome to bigoted prejudice.
