For the past week ive been having problems playing TAO. Ill get about half way though a game and suddenly it will freeze up and D/C me.
READ THIS BEFORE YOU POST A REPLY!!!!!!
1.) Ive been here a while i know all the excuses for the n00bs.
2.) It's not my computer. I run on a 2.5 ghz 512 ram with a 512 mb graphics card.
3.) i know its not my system because i just yesterday formatted it. And it was doing this before and now after.
So that rules out crappyness of the comp, and software problems.
4.)I've had this problem using IE and Firefox. So its not a browser problem.
5.)I have no firewall, Other than the windows one. Thats not the problem so dont mention it.
So basically that leaves two things that i can think of. My router, or an actually TAO bug caused by my IP possibly.
Please don't give any retarded suggestions.. i know what im doing but im just stumped with this one. Thanks in advance.

Can someone with some technical knowledge help me here?

Most likely the route between you, your ISP and the TAO server sucks.
Your connection to the server is simply not stable.

Anything i can do, other than calling them?

Have you tried pinging the different server? Try doing some traceroutes, and see if that really is the problem.
(the TAO servers are http://tacticsarena1.uvault.com, http://tacticsarena2.uvault.com, http://tacticsarena3.uvault.com, http://tacticsarena6.uvault.com

On the side i did some snooping in my router, Turns out it was a built in firewall.. who would've thought?
Well it says it blocks:
Your Router is equipped with a firewall that will protect your network from a wide array of common hacker attacks including Ping of Death (PoD) and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. You can turn the firewall function off if needed. Turning off the firewall protection will not leave your network completely vulnerable to hacker attacks, but it is recommended that you turn the firewall on whenever possible.
So i went into the log and it had this:
Firewall log:
2006-07-29 09:28:47 1 Blocked by DoS protection 169.254.121.153
2006-08-02 06:50:21 1 Blocked by DoS protection 71.116.86.103
2006-08-03 11:42:17 1 Blocked by DoS protection 71.193.232.239
2006-08-03 12:34:18 1 Blocked by DoS protection 89.56.59.102
Is this my problem?
Btw: looking at the dates, they are roughly when i had my problems.

Those IP's don;t match the TAO servers though. If you ping each server you'll see the IP's.
Sounds to me like your router thought it was detecting an incoming attack, and simply cut connection to anything not "needed".

That could be it. Since im usually browsing the net when playing TAO. I turned off the filter and i got through a full game for once.

You should still go through and set those addresses I listed as OK with your router. Then it shouldn;t cut connection on them.

This is unfortunately one little problem with this game. With most internet use, if you d/c for a split second you don't notice anything. If you're mid browsing, it just stalls a minute on a blank screen then picks up as if it were lag. Most messenger programs will keep you online during blips, and many realtime online games will just lag. As far as I can tell with TAO, little disconnects with the internet will d/c you from the game completely. So yeah, I concur with Jeffery, which explains why your accurate user-end system troubleshooting yielded no results.

Well, that sucks. And it answers why i was d/c'ed a while ago. I guess no more downloading, IM'ing, surfing, and listening to music all at once anymore.

Actually, the DC's used to be worse. Then Seed did build in a small buffer to allow for small burps to not disconnect. Unfortunately this fix is why some peoples accounts don;t log off when they DC legitimately.
The problem is that Seed is a game designer, not a team of game designers.

Well, I think it is "normal" right now for connections to be a little less stable. Overall the Internets infrastructure is sufferng from the heatwave throughout the United States. Several datacenters and providers have had downtime due to heat damage. Myspace was even offline for a while when their datacenter had a blackout and their backup generators failed.

And yet magically the game is hosted in the US, so your connection goes through where therte IS a heat wave.

Jeffery
08-08-2006, 02:53 PM
Because the internet is like a spider web. There may be 500 ways to shunt traffic.(random chosen number) If only 2 of those ways suck, then only 2 out of 500 connections become crappy.
Usually the number of crappy connections is lower. Right now they are higher. Not just for TAO, but for many sites and datacenters.

..So for some reason, these random d/cs occur for me when I am dominating the game and about to win a nice pile of stats
I'm using Comcast, linksys wireless router, firewall off or allows TAO.

See the lag post I made in GL, its not just me, it looks like it is TAO in general.
Edit:
I did some traceroutes, and along the way it jumps up +82ms at datapipe.ge3-7.3.br01.sjo01.pccwbtn.net. for each route.
I'll play around with my router though. I played with my router's firewall, disabled it.
DC'd 2 seconds later regardless. So I guess that like Jeffery says, one of the servers on my pathway to TAO is busted.
*sigh*
And nah Uni, I notice them plenty. I d/c from the lobby, and I've dc'd in countless clan games and many games that I'm winning. About 6 games I was winning or had won so far :(

Nah, its the servers. Serigy needs to come on and put on some hackz0r skills. *Sighs* Gotta wait till Monday.
i have the same problem, i was 1467 on greatlakes as a pure grey, and now i D/C 3 times in a row, what made me go under 1435 or smt... I play and then i get some hacking stuff from my norton, that someone try's to hack me or smt :/ and then he turns off my connection with tacticsarena :| i play this game for 3 years now, from the scratch, i know everything about it, but this week is the first time i get those random D/C's, and its verry irritating if u want to go above 1500 as a grey :/ i hope there is a way to get things right now? :/ maybe its my oppenent that gets my connection undone, by typing a sentence or something that norton doesn't like, or i don't know what :s but i have the problem now, and i play it 3 years :/ so .... :s

Same thing for me. I was an inch away from the win (was going to back-stab a 1 hp knight), and then the connection was gone.
At first I thought my firewall was causing it, but it looks like is happening to everybody.
Would it maybe possible to have a redundant connection of some kind?
!Diamond!

I'm thinking some of the D/Cs are because of a bad connection to the TAO website itself.
To check your ping to TAO.
Start > Run > Type in CMD, hit enter. The command prompt should then appear. Now click next to where it says C:\Documents and Settings\YourName> and type in : ping www.tacticsarena.com and hit enter.
The CMD will then do it's thing and will give you a reply. Shown below is what should come up.
http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/8250/cmdkw8.jpg
If you see there are 4 replies on each there will be time= (a number)ms. The numbers on my time are all relatively close, meaning I have a good connection from my computer to TAO itself. If your numbers are say above 200 you may lag (although TAO has been lagging alot for most of us lately so it might not be your connection). Also if your numbers are spaced far apart you have a bad connection.
If you then look down it gives you the "approximate round trip times in milli-seconds". It will have automatically given you the minimum, maximum and the average. Again if the maximum, minimum and average are close together, your connection is fine.

But just to throw another name in the mix, i've been DCing a lot lately as well, where there was no problem earlier.

The lag is due to all the grey accounts because we have not had the wipe the servers size can not hold all the accounts. So it randomly disconnects people to try and remove some of the lag.
Eidt: this is only a theory as i do not have any proof.

well, i can assure you there is no TAO conspiracy that waits specifically till you are winning and then disconnects you. I have proof: Seed/dev is to lazy to work in the extra code. ;)
I didn't realize however you were talking about the lag d/c, especially the ones that pop up on Rev so often nowadays. Yes, it's server side. I appologize wholeheartedly if you were trying to get me to see this at first, but I only read it as "random d/c".
Here's the test: if suddenly you type things and they don't come out... or if after such a time you exit or are d/c and try to log back in to find CONNECTION REFUSED - it's server side. It sucks. I'm not computer oriented enough to give you advice on that matter. :(

If you have a wireless internet, wouldnt logging into your router and setting the restrictions to allow the TAO server IP Address fix part of the lag? I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to routers or servers. Aside from that, A lower Ping = better connection right? Least that's what it is on my other online games.

Lower ping = good, you're correct on that part.
As for setting the router, etc... No, that wont help with the lag. With it blocking, its either On or Off. No in-between.
