LW strategy for Greys

It says for greys because if your a gold and its on your field, you did something wrong. Lightning Wards are FOR GREYS ONLY. NOW greys the first thing you want to think about is placement for the LW (Lightning Ward).

The Lightning Ward should be placed in the very front row in the same column as the Cleric. This gives not only full protection from annoying Witches attacking your cleric, but also an offensive to invading units who want to take a stab at your weaker units. There is only 3 and I repeat 3 spots in the entire field a lightning ward should be placed. In the very middle top row. 3rd column from the left or 3rd column from the right. Anywhere else is not good.

When should you use a LW you may ask. Well if there is a Pyro or Witch in your vicinity, ZAP THAT B*tch. It is a guarenteed insta-kill. Also if there is a pretty badly injured unit in its range, you probably want to attack with the LW, and if that doesn't finish him off, use a mud, assassin, or scout to wipe him out. If you find yourself in the predicament of having your LW in range of an opposing LW. you find yourself in a pickle. If you have 2 clerics, feel free to fire away at the opposing LW and using your Witch and pyros to strike at it. Getting rid of an opposing LW can be quite usefull. Just remember this, 90% of the time if you attack his LW, he will start attacking yours back. Its not always a good idea to attack an opposing LW in your range. If you dont have a dual-clerics it is up to your digression on whether to, or not to, do a LW show down. If you do have a LW show down, your oppenent might start bringing in their mages to bomb you. These units have low blocking and can be picked off by ranged units or your knights without difficulty.
LW is also good for zapping unhurt units. For example if you have opposite side turts (units hudled together for warmth on opposite sides), then the enemy might be dumb enough to send a lone unit your way. this is the best time to start zapping like theres no tommarow. Lone units are great targets for LWs.


LW as a weapon without using it. There are some games in which you may not use your LW. Just because you did not bring down an almighty lightning bolt from the sky, does not mean it was worthless. The good ol' LW scares people from attacking from the front. this can bottle-neck enemies from coming in from the side. If your in a corner this can be a very good advantage. For example, units will come in from a single side, making it easy for your enchanty run loose like the loose women she is. This is a very good strategy because most units will come from the side, which will then have a blockade of his own units. Which you can now slowly pick off until your oppenent surrenders. YAY LWs.

P.S. Not a bad guide altogether, but some things are conventional wisdom and some others are really... Well, not true. What's really interesting about your guide is some are both. For instance, the lightning ward's placement. For a beginner, it's conventional wisdom to have a Lightning Ward four spaces directly ahead of the Cleric as it helps them develop fundamental strategies both in defending with the Lightning Ward and using it offensively, and gives them an understanding of how to use it; however, as one develops more understanding of how the Lightning Ward is used, you can place it in more inventive positions that allow more varied uses of the Lightning Ward (I've created a set with a Lightning Ward in the second row from the front, one off-center, with the Cleric in the corner, which can be found in F.1. Now, with these two units alone the Cleric looks ridiculously exposed and almost a sure kill for a good opponent, with no frontal protection (certainly none from the LW) and minimal side protection. However, as you will see in F.2:

The second Barrier Ward provides an indestructible frontal defense for the Cleric against mage attacks by means of self-Barrier, as well as far-reaching Barrier Ward protection in opposite-side battles; the off-position Lightning Ward, meanwhile, grants outward flank deterrence while the Enchantress provides inward deterrence of both the front and side (though at the risk of freezing a ward). The idea is to deter the enemy from fighting the relatively unguarded side flank with the lone Lightning Ward, effectively funneling them to the front where they are met with a readily available front line. It's more complex LW strategy, but it's strategy nontheless.

Another example of this is where you mention that a Mage or Dark Magic Witch should be fried by the Lightning Ward, as it is an "insta-kill"; while this is not only true in many cases, but indeed conventional Lightning Ward wisdom, but in more advanced strategy this very knowledge can be used by the opponent to trap the opponent in an unnecessary trade-off. I personally reserve my Lightning Ward for an intruding Scout if it is a present threat to a Cleric or another unit more useful than my enemy's Pyromancer (which is most units, as most people aside from Match Strike don't know jack about Pyromancers). The not-so-simple fact of the matter is some people plan on people using their Lightning Wards on a frail mage unit, running up the Lightning Ward's recovery and allowing the opponent five turns to attack within Lightning Ward range without actually being in danger.

Saying "always burn mages with the LW" may help newer players as they develop, but if they cling to this later on it could hurt them.

Although I guess at that point they'd have enough understanding of the game to think for themselves.

Oh well.

A well-done effort at ward guides. A little elementary, but good nontheless.

I was gonna rep you for the guide, until I saw how asinine you took to people posting opinions contrary to yours. Golds CAN and WILL use Lightning Wards in their turtles. In fact, a majority of the top golds DO use Lightning Wards in some gold form or other; I consider it the centrepiece of my gold formation, well, right below my Furgon, Frost Golem, Scouts, and Mud Golem.

I have been playing as a grey since my sophmore year in high school and I just finished my senior year so ironically that makes just under 3 years. I have been a gold for just under 2 years. My strategy may not look so good to the people of FPS forums because the only Server I play on is Legends server. The strategy used on that server differs I guess from which that is used on TAO.com.

To those who are coming here with random "you suck"s and "you copy", maybe it would be within your grasp of common courtesy to extend unto him a rebuttal to his strategy, or proof of plagarism? Highlight the lines he copied and link them to Bottle's strategy guides. Come up with some counterpoints, like I did, to SHOW his strategy is off. You make yourselves look bad if all you can bring forward to represent FPS, with all your collective knowledge and experience compiled into this game, is "you suck".

pitot - As I'm sure you will very well figure out with enough applications of the Lightning Ward in due time, it makes a very good TURTLE unit. When placed properly with a Stone Golem, it severely limits the potential for a Scout to defocus said Stone Golem without getting brutally fried (as is the case with the Cleric in both grey and gold). Everybody here must know that an unstoned Scout dies from a Lightning Ward & Dragon Tyrant attack, regardless of healing, and even a stoned Scout dies from two DTs & a LW after a heal, which can be accomplished with a Dragon Tyrant - Lightning Ward - Dragon Tyrant sequence for those of you (everyone except the mods, excluding myself) who don't have two Dragon Tyrants.

When used with a Furgon it makes an excellent frontal deterrent used in conjunction with a replenishable Furgon wall, essentially defending both flanks. (This would be almost impossible without the Lightning Ward, because somebody could just split up and rush both sides and the Furgon couldn't defend against anything.)

Some time ago, to prove the Turtle wasn't as useless as it seemed, I went on a turtle challenge, where I used the same four-attack turtle against my opponent, regardless of their strategy (essentially "freestyle" games), in an attempt to get to 1700 from 1566. I gave up at 1601 because nobody seemed to be getting the point, and had already convinced themselves that turtles were meat for freestylers, but if you were to look at those old records you'd see that if it weren't for Freestyle, I'd have actually lost dozens of points (note: I'm not that great of a turtler).

The form I got to 1601 with from 1566, and for that matter got to 1566 from, ah, wherever I was when I golded, was a very standard four-attack turtle; and if it weren't for the Lightning Ward, it would never have succeeded.

Besides, why is this thread here. IT was ment for legenders. *In which are not real* And if you think, that if a gold uses a LW is "Bad" then think again. I've played many great golds, who use/used LW's in their sets.

ACK I Never read bottles posts, I never even heard of bottle until I was accused of copying him and I will refuse to read any part of bottles strategies just so i can keep this defense. It's obvious Geoffrey and some1udontknow are being antagonistic; however, that doesn't justify your actions, which really don't serve any purpose but to fan the flames.

Allow me to use your own analogy here--one who would spend time arguing with a fool goes against his own reasoning and common sense to attempt to reason with the unreasonable. Somebody who defies common sense with their actions is a fool. Watching you all argue amongst yourselves I have come to but one conclusion:

The simple fact is, for quite awhile even I used my Lightning Ward in the third rank. Common knowledge is common, not universal. Not everyone knows everything, and before knowledge DOES become common, it is widely learned THE HARD WAY. This thread helped at least one person look at their strategy and improve it.

The form I got to 1601 with from 1566, and for that matter got to 1566 from, ah, wherever I was when I golded, was a very standard four-attack turtle; and if it weren't for the Lightning Ward, it would never have succeeded.

The fact of the matter is, Lightning Ward was an essential part of my success! It's every bit a gold unit as it is a grey unit.
That type of form works better with knight, IMO, although the LW does allow you to more easily have stone in that corner, if that's what you like.

You can put "and" in the start of a sentence. And it can be proper grammar. It is not proper grammar in a proffesional text, eg. Essay, book report, term paper, ect. If you have ever read a book other than the stuff they force you to read in Earth Science, you would know and is perfectly ok to start a sentence in, Especially in a VERY unproffesional TAO post. Learn what your talking about before lecturing me.
