Detox.
You do a fast first to detox, either with fruit juice, vegetable juice, or water. Some people only eat fruit and drink those fluids, some only drink the fluids.
Cleans your system out the longer you do it.
Depending on how you do it, your body won't lose too much muscle, and you'll feel much more energized after.
I did a 5 day fruit & water fast once, felt great afterwards. Was pretty lean.
I should do it again soon, just to clean out all the candy I've aten

You'll loose alot of fat, if that is what you're asking. Once you're done loosing fat though, as they said, you'll loose muscle. I'm pretty sure 5 days is good for me.

Hey ya know what else is a good test of endurance? Seeing how many amps of electricity you can take, or stabbing yourself in a non-vital place and seeing how long it takes before the hemoraging makes you pass out. Hey another good test of endurance is holding your breath under water until you pass out.

Water fasts done over certain periods of time are not bad for your health. It is often thought to help "cleanse" the system.
The problem you may run into has to do with what your average caloric intake is normally. Dropping it to 0 if it is used to be much higher can trigger some nasty feeling side effects. You'll notice by day three that the "hunger pains" seem to be wanting to kill you. After that they go away for a while.
One thing you do want to avoid during this is any strenuous activities.

Well, my usual calorie intake varies alot (probably from 0 to 4000, lol). Usually when I do this I quit by day three. I'll be sure to go the distance this time. I'll definitly take that strenious activity thing in mind, especially when working on my car. Manually removing tires is pretty strenious.
Also, doesn't this mean you taking a wee-wee ever 5 minutes?

One day is not long enough for the body to run through a few cycles and get rid of toxins.
And yes, the body does turn to itself in order to find that fuel. And fat is one of the first sources targeted.

Your body builds up toxins from all the sugar, processed crap, and other things your body eats that it isn't built to. There are tons of articles on it, just do a google search on water fasting or fruit fasting.
A 5 day water fast? No thanks. Maybe a 2-3 day as a test of mental strength, but no way for 5. Fruit fast is a good way to do it.
Especially if you're acclimated to junk food. Going cold turkey off junk food is one thing, but dropping straight from junk food to water isn't an easy feat. Not to mention, eating junk food after all would be a waste of your time. Trust me on this, after eating healthy for wrestling for 3 months straight (I had a handful of sweets the entire time, no pizza or fast food) and then doing a 5 day fruit fast, eating pizza destroyed my system.

I seriously double fasting is good for our body. Doesn't the Muslims fast for a month every year?
Muslims fast for the holy month of Ramadan. From sunrise to sunset they may not eat OR DRINK anything at all.
The only exceptions are for the very young, very old, and the disabled.
At sunset many break fast by attending a feast or dinner held at local houses or Mosques.
The actual fast depends on the lunar cycle, so what month it is changes constantly. It slides forward by a couple of weeks every year, and lasts for around a monthish.

Uhm.. I disagree. You can't take your mind off being hungry. That is why they tell you to eat breakfast to function well during the day. That is why meds like adderall and ritalin have the side effect of taking away hunger - in turn helping even more concentration.

yeah, daemon, read the article, great insight. Drunk, gl with the fasting, just make sure not to overhydrate yourself, that could cause problems (overcleansing, not too sure where i heard it from, but I'm sure it is bad for you). Also, if you are trying to lose weight, won't your body retain water weight for a period of time?

Good read.Actually that's a horrible read, although the part where he gets into Jesus and religious BS is slightly amusing. Don't confuse science with faith. But honestly, let's look at this article. What "toxins" are removed from the body specifically? Where is it stored? The author gives a lot of vague directions but never says anything really. Let's look at the list he specifically cites as to what toxins are removed:
Ø Dead, dying or diseased cells - this happens every day regardless of fasting
Ø Unwanted fatty tissue - yes, because you're not eating, and still using energy. A much better way of accomplishing this is simply getting off your ass and going for a jog/walk/secks.
Ø Trans-fatty acids - same as above
Ø Hardened coating of mucus on the intestinal wall - BS. Water fasting will help sweep out mucus, this is true, but so will eating, and there isn't some old hardened mucus lining your intestines normally. Honestly... feel your abdomen. You feel hardened tubes of mucus in there normally? If so, see a doctor immediately.
Ø Toxic waste matter in the lymphatic system and bloodstream - I like how under the "toxins eliminated" section he lists "toxins" as an answer. What toxins?! The spleen and liver already filter the bloodstream. Is he expecting people to believe there are weird chemicals stuck within hemoglobin? What toxins is he talking about?
Ø Toxins in the spleen, liver, and kidneys - again, which toxins would those be?
Ø Mucus from the lungs and sinuses - back to the mucus. Ya know, mucus is a pretty good thing. It is our first defense and covers all mucosal membranes in the body. It's true tho - dehydration will lessen mucus production, cuz you got less fluid to work with!
Ø Imbedded toxins in the cellular fibers and deeper organ tissues - yet again, what toxins? What "deeper organ tissues" are we talking about?
Ø Deposits in the microscopic tubes responsible for nourishing brain cells - microscopic tubes, eh? Not too many "toxins" get to the brain, especially the larger chemicals people may encounter. This phenomena is better known as the blood-brain barrier.
Ø Excess cholesterol - this one is true. If the body doesn't have an intake of cholesterol to make things, it will just start breaking down its own cholesterol. However, there are many ways to accomplish this same result. For example, have a cholesterol free diet.
This is junk science. Unfounded. His last stated benefit is "gives the digestive system a rest". Our organs were designed to not need to rest. This is why we don't need to give the heart muscles a rest.
Correct. How often do you do things without knowing the benefit or harm? And why is it you still haven't caught on why people call you a moron sometimes?
Whereas only drinking water is a test of mental and physical endurance and those are one or the other. So run naked - solves that problem :p

I felt stronger last time, my body will let me know how it's doing. Last time, fat pretty much melted off in five days on the fruit bit. Considering I don't have much, I was impressed.
In other news, my mom made one of my favorite dishes tonight forgetting I just started this whole shebang.

I go by how I feel in this case. Not going to bother debating because you won't change my mind. I ignored the faith aspects of the article by the way. I've read a good number of sources that recommend it, sources I trust. So I'll keep on keeping on. :)
I felt stronger last time, my body will let me know how it's doing. Last time, fat pretty much melted off in five days on the fruit bit. Considering I don't have much, I was impressed. The entire article is faith. There's not a scrap of science in it. It's not unusual for the placebo effect or a number of other things that can make people feel better. Whatever the reason, I'm glad that is the final effect for you. I'm not going to try to change your mind as to whether it works for you, but I will try to change your mind as far as the "science" behind that article goes - it's false.
EDIT: dirka you're not just a dirtbag when you're off drugs (or perhaps on a water diet). Either way, if you keep this up I might have to start liking you. ;)

So it's a bad article. It was easy to find on google.
Give me some time and maybe I'll find another one :p
It's got nothing to do with faith for me though

If you're going to go on a liquid fast, try the drink Naked.
It's 100% pure juice from Whole Foods, so it's organic with no chemicals or crap in it. And it tastes good! I used to drink it in the mornings and throughout the day when I got hungry so I wouldn't eat food between meals. I lost a good amount of weight. Only problem is that it's about $3.50 a single bottle, but you can get bigger containers for a decent price. So make sure you've got money before you go out and buy some.
Also, drink some pomegranite juice. That will help cleanse the system faster.

It's got nothing to do with faith for me thoughYou'd be surprised. People who think they are getting certain treatments *feel* the treatment whether they get it or not. Also, there's something to be said from on/off routines. For example, if you got a massage every day, and then suddenly you got nothing for two weeks, when you get that same massage at the end of the two week massage-fast (:p) that massage is gonna feel better then any other before it. Similarly, if you starve your body from the foods and energy it needs, when you finally give it those nutrients and energy, it's gonna *feel* amazing, compared to the state of lacking those things. Just my idea. Either way, if it makes you happy and feel good (and it's safe) - have fun.

my college had nighttime (and sometimes daytime) naked running parties. As in, a group from the men's track team, or the women's track team would just go running. Not streaking across a lawn and then putting their clothes back on. As in, going for a run, in just socks and sneakers.
oh american liberal arts schools...
