. . . I think I'll take a nap. :lazy2:

. . .Zzzzzz

. . .Zzzzzz

. . .Zzzzzz . . . huh? Wha . . .? Oh, yeah. That real point of this thread.

I find it hard to get to sleep at night, no matter what I do. I work full-time, and go to college at night, and even though I'm exhausted when I walk in the door, I cannot get to sleep 'til around 3. I just lie there and stare at the ceiling. I take an hour long run every day for lunchbreak, so it's not like I'm not getting any exercise. I don't drink anything caffeinated during the day (I've been off soda for about a year now), so it can't be that keeping me awake. I've been taking calcium before I go to bed at night and even that doesn't help me get to sleep. I get about 3 1/2 hours of sleep a day on average. So, I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions.

Oh, and please keep stupid comments out of here. I want to focus on real suggestions, rather then "g3tz0r a g1rlfr3nd and b0nkz h3r!!1!1".

Please and thank-you.

I would watch TV. It always helps me. It tires your eyes and than when you close them, they feel like your actually sleepy.

Your mind is thinking of other things. My reccomendation, do a puzzle or something before bed, itll focus your thoughts on something besides life. Or put a fan on and make it blow on your feet or something, then youll focus on the feeling of the air on your feet. I used to not sleep for weeks at a time, working 60 hours and going to high school. If that doesnt work, bonkz0rs teh lady friends.

Do you have to sit there for 3 hours before sleeping or can you use the 3 hours for something productive and then fall asleep?

I would accept the fact that I'm a freako and use it to my advantage :)

you could always become a vampire and invert your day

Usually, yes. If I do something 'productive' until 3, then I get about 1 hour of sleep. I've tried that on the weekends so it wouldn't get in the way of work (I'd eventually get fired if I came into work with an hour of sleep, and I'd fail my college courses), and I end up getting to sleep around 5:30. That gives me an hour before I'd have to get up for work.

I've thought about inverting my day, but that would mean quitting my job, and I'd rather get fired from this job then quit. It pays all too well.

This is not uncommon. If it's really bad, you can always go for Lunesta (ask your doctor). However, there are usually normal habits that can be changed to alter sleeping pattern.

It was a good idea to run during the day and lay of caffeine. A few questions (some personal, so more important that you analyze them and not necessarily post the answers publicly).

1) Are you kept up as a result of an overactive mind? (Can't get it to shut off) Or are you still extremely tired, braindead, and still can't sleep?
2) Are you lonely? It's funny that your "don't give this suggestion" is actually a *very* valid suggestion in a number of ways. Loneliness, especially at night, commonly promotes insomnia. Having a partner around does multiple things to help with sleep:
a) It promotes more regularly bedtimes. Some insomniacs simply don't get into bed, and having a partner promotes proper bed scheduling
b) Having a partner relieves stress and loneliness, allowing sleep to come easier
c) Physical... erm... "release" (especially in guys) promotes sleep (you might wanna try this by yourself, but if it's an overactive mind that's keeping you up, this alone by yourself most likely won't cut it).
3) What is your eating schedule like? Do you have 11pm dinners? Are you having full meals during the day?

Talk to your doctor if you feel you need some more help. The majority of people experience insomnia at some point in their life, and our current medicine is getting better and better.

Well, I was thinking about just using Lunesta, but that's not going to help me in the long run. I wanna eliminate any variables that may be keeping me up, and if that doesn't work, then use some medication as needed.

1) Are you kept up as a result of an overactive mind? (Can't get it to shut off) Or are you still extremely tired, braindead, and still can't sleep?

It's a bit of both, actually. Most of the time I'll be thinking about work, college, girlfriend . . . life. A few times I'll just be laying there with absolutely nothing on my mind. I'll snap out of it and ask myself what I was thinking about, and find that I wasn't thinking about anything. Almost like I'm sleeping with my eyes open.

2) Are you lonely? It's funny that your "don't give this suggestion" is actually a *very* valid suggestion in a number of ways. Loneliness, especially at night, commonly promotes insomnia. Having a partner around does multiple things to help with sleep:

I'm not terrible lonely, in fact I'm quite social. I see my girlfriend at college, weekends, and sometimes will take her to dinner. I'm always with friends at work and college, and there's the weekends where we all get together and do something stupid. We don't sleep together, and certainly are not sexually active. We both have agreed to that, and hold to it. As for your last suggestion, I'll keep that in mind. ;)

3) What is your eating schedule like? Do you have 11pm dinners? Are you having full meals during the day?

I rarely eat breakfast, even though everyone tells me I should since it's 'the most important meal of the day'. I eat lunch either before, or after I take my run. It depends if I'm hungry before or not. I usually eat dinner around 5:30 or 6. I don't ever snack, and I try to stay away from dessert (gotta watch my figure). ;)

Talk to your doctor if you feel you need some more help. The majority of people experience insomnia at some point in their life, and our current medicine is getting better and better.

Well, I talked to my doctor already, and he says that if I want to try and eliminate variables before I take medication, then he's more than willing to assist. He also think that growing pains play a factor in it. My brain is growing both physically and mentally, so it's trying to shut down and grow at the same time.

The feedback is appreciated. Hopefully you see something in here that didn't. :)

Edit:
You may just be an insomniac.

I woke up three times last night. The first time was because the person next to me came to bed and decided to touch me with COLD hands on my lower back. BRRR!!

The second time, this same person woke up with a bad dream about cats. (shrug)

The third time, my mother called me up at 6:45am to tell me that my grandmother died, which I had already known.

So yes, I'm rather tired and low-key today.

gray - being social during the day doesn't mean you can't be a bit lonely at night. Falling asleep with the girl might be all you need, all physical stuff aside.

I honestly don't know your life well enough to give you any further advice, sorry.

Beat your meat.

Ahahahahaaha.

I usually get to sleep pretty promptly upon going to bed. Probably because late at night I attempt to watch something on TV and get so bored that i fall asleep on the couch, and then my mom or dad comes out and yells at me to go to bed so i stumble into my bed and crash.

I couldn't stay up til 3 if i tried.

On the topic of sleep. I sometimes (sunday nights after a long weekend of staying up late) can't get to sleep, I find myself wanting to go to sleep, but I just stare at the wall. The next morning, I wake up, but it feels like I wasn't really sleeping, like I was half asleep. :( Also, last weekend, I couldn't sleep. I had a dream that I was awake, I was so upset with myself that the sun was comming up and I was still wide awake. Then my alarm goes off. I got so mad, first time its ever happend to me. ;)

btw, since sleep cycles work around 3 hours, many people actually feel more rested after 6 hours of sleep compared to 7, when they wake up mid sleep cycle. Try it sometime :)

Sorry to hear that 12 :(

The Gray, I feel your pain. It usually takes me a good hour or so to sleep depending on my day. My mind wakes up and contemplates life when my body says it's time to sleep.

This helps me some nights.

Full body relaxation. Call it meditation, whatever you want. Lie flat on your back, stretch out a bit, focus on the ceiling, and flex each muscle 1 by 1 for 3 seconds each, and then relax the muscle. Feet up to the neck. Do that twice. Then relax each muscle individually without flexing this time. Your mind should be focused on your actions, and your body will relax unbelievably.

Then close your eyes and count from 1 to 20 slowly, telling yourself you're getting sleepy, body's relaxed, arms relaxed, etc., between counts. Hypnotize yourself basically.

Works for me.

Whenever I have trouble sleeping, I just put my pillows on the opposite of the bed, and sleep in reverse. I don't know why, but it works.

Feel like it? Heck, this monday I didn't get to sleep until roughly about 2am. On tuesday afternoon in maths, my vision blurred, I yawned loads, slouching in my chair didn't help, it made things worse.

I'll give you one simple guess to what I did.

Try and watch football. ;)

On a more serious note, maybe ask your doctor if you could use some stronger medication. If you don't want to do that, then try to relax and not think about things. I've always found that watching TV sometimes helps, too. Anyways, if not being able to sleep is getting in the way of school and other important things, then I highly suggest you do some research (hey, that might put you to sleep).

Well, I tried flexing every muscle in my body one-by-one, but that only made me tense, prolonging my awaken agony. Then, I put a fan at the end of my bed and let it blow on my feet, but that made my toes numb, and I ended up getting out of bed to turn it off (which brought me out of whatever sub-conscience I was in at the moment). Then I tried sleeping on the other side of the bed, but my neighbor had his front porch light on, and it was beaming through the shades. So, I returned to the other side of the bed, and eventually went to sleep. Last I had looked at the clock, it was 2:45. When I woke up, I was on the other side of the bed with my covers on the floor.

To top things off, I had received a call from a co-worker at 4:30am stating that on of our client's databases had crashed. He was taking care of it, but he wanted to let me know that I was on call, and if he could not get ahold of the clients IT manager, then I woulf have to go to the office and perform a switchover. Thank God he got ahold of that guy, I would've been pissed.

Still, though; I'm tired.

Hmm

the gray, sometimes if i am not tired at like... 11, i go down to the jacuzzi and chill for a while. (Sometimes i even bring friends :p)

Not sure if it makes me less tired, but it makes me relaxed so i am happy laying in bed after taking a shower and getting properly dry.

Try a nice hot shower or jacuzzi before bed :p

Flex and RELAX, haha

Don't hold it! Flex for 3 seconds, stop, then focus on relaxing the muscle further. A good visualization for me is sinking into my bed, or floating on the water.

But it doesn't work for everybody, works like a charm for me though.

Well, I sometimes set aside time to ponder things. Like a half hour or so, then I basically have a clear mind. I then am able to roll over and get to sleep. If that doesn't work, I usally try to think of building a WWII fighter plane piece by piece, in great detail. Then the next thing I know, I am waking up at 6 the next morning. I am not sure if it will help you, but theres my suggestion.

Damn man that sucks. Not being able to sleep must be horrible, lucky for me I'm usually so burnt out by the time I get into bed that I just fall asleep watching tv. I used to have some trouble going to bed as a kid, I would just sit in my bed for hours awake, but smoking a joint at night works wonders. Prolly not something you would want to do just for sleep but it sure as hell works for me.
