So I made the poll, it's anonymous so you don't have to worry about anything. If you want though, speak up. I know for a fact I don't have ADHD, but I was diagnosed with it. If anything, I'm just simply lazy.

He even said that overall he thinks that being lazy contributes to it alot. However, he said that the medication will even help with that. Sadly, it actually has. I'm not in bad shape or anything, but I get bored if I'm doing nother. Where as before I wouldn't get bored, I'd be happy because I wasn't doing a single thing!
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I don't have ADHD. They give you a test that basically asks in about 25 questions: "Do you have ADHD?" I got fed up with the dumb questions, I thought he wasn't watching, and checked the last 5 or 10 without even reading them. Evidently he was watching. Anyway, he could be right.. but.. I just doubt it. Find those stats :)

Wait wait, you decided to compare a 50 question non-scientific unspecific psychologically-unrelated test from an online religion website, with a relevant tailored 25 question test presented by a doctor for a specific reason? Do you really think your test compares to mine in any manner as to counter my point? This isn't physics here, it was a 25 question "how do you feel" test. It probably took him just as long to circle fake answers then reading the questions and circling real ones.
How do you not find it hilarious that he didn't have the attention span to complete an ADHD questionare?

Question for people who are concidered to have ADHD... what do you take and how much?
Because some of you guys are saying how you don't take it, so I'm guessing it doesn't do that much for you then. My brother has to take 72 mg of concerta (form of ritalin with a time release thing) every day. If you take him off the stuff, he gets extremely hyper and can't focus on something for over 30 seconds.

I didn't mean to offend you, seriously, but it's my honest opinion. I've had this same discussion with one of the IRCers before, I'm know my stance is somewhat founded on ignorance, but all the people I've talked to who "have ADD" have never convinced me that I wasn't right.
I mean, if you have some kind of seriously debilitating problem, then I can understand taking meds for that. But taking meds because you can't sit still for a few minutes, or because you have trouble concentrating?

I've met a bunch of people with ADHD, one of best friends has ADHD, and to anyone who says ADD or ADHD don't exist, you can tell within 2 minutes of being around him whether or not he has had his meds.
We used to play poker a lot, and even on his meds it would still take him a while to decide whether or not to do someone, because he would keep on getting distracted. When he was off his meds, he would be wandering around my kitchen, eating cheese out of a teacup, and would take 5 minutes to decide whehter or not to call.

Not being able to pay attention isn't a disease. Just as being lazy isn't.
So you're going to suddenly put down what thousands upon thousands of highly trained doctors and psychologists believe to be a disorder and merely classify it as "people being dumb"?
Jesus Christ, that's some ignorant thinking. But hey, I agree with you. Nobody has AIDS, they just have no immune system because they do. Oh, and, forget cancer. Free radicals and such don't actually exist. Lumps just form on their own.
Well guess what. Not being able to pay attention and being lazy are vastly different things. If you cannot force yourself to pay attention, if you've wracked every corner of your brain and done whatever you can to fix it on your own, and you still can't do it, then guess what? There's probably something in your brain that inhibits that.
Not everything in the world can be explained through "people being dumb" just because they disagree with you. Laziness is completely different. Laziness is the lack of willpower to do something because perhaps the rewards aren't great enough to justify you exerting yourself, or some other thing within you that makes it not worth it to do work. That's why laziness on its own isn't a disorder. You know what else isn't? Being an ignorant asshole.

Agreed.
We are led to believe throughout all of our childhood and teenage lives that potential is what's really important. Mothers try to justify their children's bad grades and claim they are smart with phrases such as "he really has so much potential...".
The fact of the matter is, in the real world, potential doesn't mean crap. There's ability and inability. Either you can do it, or you can't. And if you can't, no one cares whether your dumb, disabled, have no attention span, or lazy - it's all the same outcome - you can't do it.
You can put whatever name or label you want on it to make yourself feel different then someone who gets to the same place via lack of intelligence, but at the end of the day, no one really cares.
In the real world, there's only ability.

I have problems concentrating or standing still sometimes, but I've decided that it's not serious enough for meds, and I just need to push myself. I have trouble sitting still most of the time. I usually need to be tapping my foot or doing something with my hands to concentrate, otherwise I have the tendency to totally space out on the corner of a chair or something.
Some people have it really bad. But not every person who has trouble concentrating needs meds, me being one of them.
ADD/ADHD has NOTHING to do with being lazy. Being lazy is a choice, not being able to concentrate isn't. If you aren't able to walk, it's not your choice. But if you just don't want to walk, then it IS your choice.

AIDS and Cancer have proof. ADHD has none.Really? So accounts from those who suffer it and doctors and psychologists mean nothing? Wow! I guess all psychological disorders can be debunked by some kid who thinks he's more qualified to make judgments than a doctor with years of education in this field.
That would be a good excuse, wouldn't it.This is about the equivalent of saying that gravity is merely an excuse to say that God doesn't make things fall.
I know the difference between being lazy and not being able to pay attention. Thing is, you can either argue that both are by choice or neither one is. Both are conditions of the mind. That's quite the black-and-white view. I guess then apples and steaks must both be meat or fruits. They're both food. And who's to say we can't live on Mercury without altering anything? It's a planet. Oh, and I guess I should stick my head in a toilet and call it a drinking fountain.

laziness and attention disorders can be very close. Heck dirka is PMing me at this moment claiming he refuses to read my PMs, but just wants to tell me that. It's not laziness, as he's actively responding to each one. It's attention problems as he can't actually read them

To be fair, there are doctors with years of experience who also say ADHD is a fraud.
I'd have to say it's a disease but not one that is because of a bodily function. I'd say the kid has just been brought up in particular culture or style that the occurance of a certain variable, be it subliminal messages in adverts or too much corn syrup, is so much so that they have issues with paying attention.

It's a minority, but that minority thinks that it's still a psychological condition and doesn't merely "not exist at all." If there is a minority that thinks it's non-existant, then they are extremely few.

One of my friends from school has ADD, but yet is still hyper. There is also a crazy one with ADHT and has mono at the moment but he is still hyper as hell. I hear he is allergic to the pills so he does not take them. One of my other friends has ADHT and is perfectly normal. I am really not sure whether all the times people are told they have ADHT if they really do.
Also I hate how some people make ADD an excuse. There is one girl in a couple of my classes and she is a total shithead. She's been smokin when since she was like 12, now 15. She is the biggest crackhead I have ever seen and she gets fatter and fatter each year. And the accuse for getting Fs in all of her classes is because she has ADD. She never pays attention because she is sleepy and falls asleep but she blames it on ADD.
End my stories...

... You fail to read or something. It is a psychological disorder just the same as being lazy is. I don't see them fixing lazy people. They can fix it theirself. Our world just loves to medication up. Explain how someone with ADHD can pay attention to certain subjects? They choose what they like, my friend.

If you said we live on a planet, then correct. Apples and steak are both food, yes. You do what you want with the toilet. You really fail to see the point. If you can fix ADHD with medication, then you can fix laziness with medication as well.
P.S. I completely agree with duffy. Only I wouldn't call it a disease, because that gives it merit.

You just proved my point. You can't fix lazy. If you give the kid a ton of meds that makes him have too much energy, sure his behavior will change. It is the same with ADHD.
Sad but true.

No you don;t. If you WANTED to improve, you woudl do so. You choose to be lazy. You make a choice to not do things, as opposed to doing them. The choice is an active decision you make, to take the "easy" way out and not do what needs done to improve yourself.

The problem with people who truyly have ADHD is that no matter how much they TRY and do what needs doing, they just can;t get it done.
Very very true.
DD....what do you have against ADHD......you seem bent on destroying it.....

The crap about it not existing is that I was told I have the disease. If I truly have it, then it does not exist. It is just people being lazy.
Oh, is that all? Well, then you were misdiagnosed. But funnily enough, I seem to remember this post...
I'm pretty sure ADHD doesn't exist actually. Some people are just dumb.
You have fallen upon your sword.

Yes. And that gets into the overdiagnosis of ADHD in the modern times. Docotrs want to prescribe as many pills as they can to kids. Start em young, hook em for life.
Seriously, everytime I turn around there are a dozen new drugs to "solve" everything under the sun.
Got gas? Take a pill once a day, and no more gas!
Got a headache? Take a pill once a day, and have fewer headaches!
Wanna sleep around? Take a pill once a day, and only get pregnant when you get drunk and forget to take it!
There seems to be a dozen pills needed just to wake up, and two dozen needed to go back to sleep.

Now you're just grasping for straws, trying to turn it around so that the outcome was your point. And you still have not explained this post.
I'm pretty sure ADHD doesn't exist actually. Some people are just dumb.
You can't admit that this post was wrong. And it is, because even if you DO have ADHD, then you must have a very mild case, one that can be overcome by will. But it is very close-minded of you to think that your case is mirrored in every other case in the universe. Some people experience it moreso than others.

Jehuty. If I told you that you hade Llama Fever and that it was because your face was red but your face was not red, and not only that but at will you can make your face turn red, what would you conclude? I don't have ADHD and ADHD does not exist. Some people can't concentrate, fine. ADHD is an excuse to amp up kids, not a disease.

I don't have ADHD and ADHD does not exist. Some people can't concentrate, fine. ADHD is an excuse to amp up kids, not a disease.Well, let's see. I'd conclude that, if there were several million other cases of this fever spread throughout the world, then I'd say that either A: My face IS a bit red, so I may just have it a little, or B: They've made a mistake, and I don't have it. But never would I even dare to say that the entire disease is a hoax, just because one doctor got it wrong. That would be stupid and close-minded. But that's not you, is it?

and ADHD does not exist. Some people can't concentrate, fine. ADHD is an excuse to amp up kids, not a disease.
Except that it does exist, and in many cases can be directly linked to a chemical imbalance in the brain which can be scientifically measured.
I do admit ADHD is overdiagnosed, and usually by those who don;t have the training to perform the tests needed to track it scientifically. But ADHD does exist, and there is valid medical research behind it.
So please, you can say you don;t have it all you want. I will even agree with you when you say parents and schools overdiagnose kids with it all the time. But please stop claiming it simply does not exist based upon your particular case.
Using your own logic: I say women exist. But since you are not a woman, obviously women don;t exist.
Just because you aren;t a woman does not mean women don;t exist. The same with ADHD. Just because you don;t have it does notmean it does not exist.
And yes, even those WITH ADHD don;t always need pharmaceutical intervention to get past it. here are many non-drug regimens that can help a kid learn to get around it.

Reading some more posts on this thread... maybe I do have ADD?
I'm lazy all the time, but I don't choose to be. Like last night, I needed to do german work and attempt to read an entire book, since I could never get myself to do it before and there was a test coming up.
Well, I could get myself to do either. I still need to do the german work, and I still haven't been able to force myself to do it.
So if being lazy and not really be able to help that fact that your lazy means I have ADD, then yea, I guess I have ADD. Meh. But I can easily do things I enjoy with no problem.

My point wasn't that it didn't exist. My point is that uniq was saying that if a doctor said I had it, that was the end all of everything and I definitly had it. Just had to prove that is not the case. If it exists or not, I won't go into.

Yes dirka, everyone in this thread is wrong except you, as are all the doctors
sorry, i didn't actually mean retard. I used "tard" in the sense that something is messed up inside your head, and you'd rather claim it's laziness instead of the inability to produce an attention span that lasts longer then "oh look something shiny". At the end of the day, you can call it what you want - it's still the same thing, and the meds for ADHD work really well for you. This suggests that either 1) they are also "anti-lazy pills" or 2) you have ADHD but won't admit it to yourself. Either way, the end result is exactly the same: inability to perform.
So you can continue downgrading your inability, but it's really only making you look like a fool and pissing people off who have the personal responsibility to come to terms with their problem. They've accomplished that - you haven't.
