To my fellow members of Tactics Arena:

I think it's a pity that the playerbase has devolved so much lately. Even when I returned to the game, it was bad but repairable. But I do not write this to reminisce about the past, or the way this game was when it opened.

We need to begin to police our own, and we need to look at how much "fun" this game is when all we do is act foolish and like jerks. I play this game as much for the tactical play as for some good sporting banter, and to hold discussions during my games. I remember when most of the players atleast knew eachother by reputation... or the Gold Members by names.

I think it would be fitting for me to display a recent conversation I had during my game... with a Fellow GOLD MEMBER on the Great Lakes Shard. As is too common now, we did not talk at all during the game. But in the end, after he beat me by a close match, I was just trying to be a good sport before he took his final few blows to kill my last unit. His name is Dark Wolf.:

The problem I have with this being labeled the "downfall of TAO" is that this stuff has happened since the very beginning. Nothing new has happened here. If things liek this are the downfall of TAO, then TAO ended 3 years ago.

And Dirka, there have been threads like this since December 2003. Someone always semes to be complaining someone else is a poor sport, and claimign TAO is collapsing because of it.

There aren't always sore losers. What about clan games, cases where people make new accounts, times when accounts are about to be wiped, or even cases where people just don't care about stats?

And TAO isn't going downhill just because some people aren't being very mature. Anyone can have trouble dealing with frustration, especially people of the age that's most attracted to the game. You aren't necessarily the only person experiencing isolation, injustice, or dehumanization just because it feels like it.

O_P faded away long ago, as did a lot of the older vets. I can't remember exactly what it was that dragged him back into the real world.....


And you need to remember that someone calling someone a n00b does not make that eprson a n00b. In this case he seems to have taken offense that you were conversing with him after he won the game......
Personally I'd simply forget it and move on. It is true that many clans nowadays have lost that sense of honor that was commonplace when TAO began. It almost seems to be a sympton of how TAO is ran.

And I can't help it if gold's are to scared to play at my table. ;) I play for fun... but I refuse to sit at another's table, they must sit at mine. ((I occassionally jump a gold's table if it has been a few games since my last Gold Encounter))

How does one respond to "God damn, get off your high and mighty horse?" I just don't see this as positive attitude. If you have a point, establish it, let him defend, refute, counterpoint, and in the end if you can't agree then by all means establish your negative attitude.

I asked you for a game today in the lobby when you came out of a game with a grey....You didn't answer, i asked you two more times still no answer, so i logged off, Anyhow, there should be more sportmanship, if your going to win atleast say gg or if your going to lose say gg, this game is about fun not on how to slate the guy you beat.

Oh it happened, dont get me wrong. But believe me... it was far less common. And there was a much stronger sense of community.

I've discovered this phenomenon in almost every online "community" I've discovered. Be it a website forum, a MMORPG, here at TAO, even my photoblog website. When it is new, it is sponsored and used/played by people who love it. These people have something in common, and a sense of belonging and community is born. Slowly over time, as the community grows... the playerbase/userbase gets water-ed down. In the early times, some (if not a good portion of) the bad eggs are run off by the community banding together against them. As the "world" grows... this just stops happening. And eventually you get the true believers and lovers of the online community to abandon it, or they become so jaded that they "let go" of the old ways and the old sense of community, belonging, and decency.

So yeah... we had bad eggs and problem-players back in the beginning... but we also had people who were friendly and kind. People who knew the game was about having fun and meeting worthy opponents.

Today, we still have the bad eggs... but in addition, we have lost the good eggs. People just stopped caring about the bad eggs, and so more people realized they could act like jerks and nobody would care. So... it's a snowball effect. I'll ride TAO's wave until it does crash... but I'll stick to my old mindset and the classic ideology until that day. Call me old fashioned... call me ignorant... call me what you like. But I was here at the games birth when everything was new and fun, and I will continue to have fun until the day TAO perishes. Even if my new form of fun becomes patrolling as the sole sentry of common-decency and sportsmanship.

By the way, I'd like to remind you all it is Veteran's Day. Call someone you know who served and thank them.

I think it isnt so much that so many people are asses in "real life"...the issue at hand is that the game is free to most players and a majority of them are young. They have an entirely different view of the world from a responsible adult or a late teen.

As a result, they assume that just because behavior doesn't matter (as you are anonymous), that it is appropriate to do whatever they please despite the fact that it is a real person on the other end. I find the vast majority of the adults here act much more civilized and decent overall. I certainly get along well with the older TAOers than the younger ones. It isnt unless we are pushed that we act rashly.

Whether or not the is 100% accurate is up for debate, though I think it is logical enough.

Ok, seriously now. I've also noticed lots of poor sports, much more than there were near the beginning. There isn't really a solution to it, except to either show them how to behave by example, or shut them up somehow.

I have an idea. How about when we have a problem with someone, we make a post in the "On Notice" thread explaining why. Then the first post in the thread is edited with the current tally of people who are "On Notice" and how many people have put them "On Notice." This way, instead of foolish things like reputation, we can have people "On Notice." Once someone gets to a certain level of "On Notice" we can change their status to things such as: "ass clown" "happy meal" or "dong"

I disagree. Villhelm's probably one of the most well-spoken people on the game and as long as you respect him, he respects you. I've never heard of anybody who's had a real problem with him without starting it, and he's shown me how quickly and easily he's willing to mend miscommunication.

Sorry, what's wrong with this thread? Someone showed decency and played the part of a wonderful role model to many other people? I think the most entertaining part of that conversation was how Dark Wolf was trying to hard to insult him, and just kept getting more and more upset when it didn't work. His anger just kinda, imploded back upon himself and left Vilhelm unaffected it seemed.

Actually, they did. But he wasn't as much of a forum person as a game person. Most of his problems involved his stats and noobiness. You are more well-known for being banned numerous times for cussing, flaming, and doing all sorts of things to get yourself attention from the community so you can be talked about.

It's the truth. You crave attention, and you get it. It's just not the type that you wanted.

I think you're a nice guy, overall. And I personally like you. But you act like you want attention, and accuse others of how you are PRESENTLY acting.
