This idea came from the Sliver army in Magic, and i think that it could be a really interesting thing to add. Here are the various units:

Queen:

HP: 50
Armor: 10
Blocking: 0
Moving: 1 space
Power: 0
Recovery: 5 turns

Abilities:
during the attack phase the queen can create one baby spider. the spider ALWAYS spaws from BEHIND the queen, and if there is no space than the spider will not spawn. the spider takes up 1/2 of one space, and if it remains in the space until the queen can create again than the new spider will take up the other half.

the queen IS affected by the bonuses given by other ants.

baby spider:

HP: 20
Armor: 10
Blocking: 33% front, 16% sides
Moving: 3 spaces
Recovery: 1 turn
Power: 10

abilities:
the baby spider is only 1/2 of one unit and occupys 1/2 of one space. any area affect spell would affect BOTH spiders (that is, if there are two on one space), yet a physical attack ONLY affects ONE baby spider.

spitting spider:
hp: 40
Armor: 10
Blocking: 33% front, 16% sides
Moving: 3 spaces
Recovery: 3 turns
Power: 18 + poison attack
Range: 4 spaces

abilities:
poison spit: the spitting ant attacks by spitting an unblockable ball of poison at its opponent. Once hit, the target is poisoned for the next 3 turns, and for each turn the target recieves an additional 3 damage.

bonuses:
weak poison attack: ALL SPIDERS (for BOTH teams) recieves a poisong attack which lasts for 3 turns and deals 3 damage per turn.

tarantula:
HP: 60 (55+5)
Armor: 45 (40+5)
Blocking: 43% front, 21% sides (33+10)
Power: 27 (22+5)
Recovery time 2 turns
Movement: 3 spaces
attack: 1 space (like knight)

bonuses:
growth: ALL SPIDERS (for BOTH teams) recieve +5 hp, +5 armor, +5 power and +10% blocking

black widow:

HP: 35
Amor: 0
Blocking: 80% front, 40% sides
Power: 15
Recovery time: 2 turns
Movement: 4 spaces (3 + 1)
attack: 1 space (like knight)

abilities:
paralyzing bite: any non-ant unit hit by the black widow is paralyzed for 3 turns

bonuses:
ALL SPIDERS (for both teams) recieve +1 space for movement

General ant rules:
Spider spells do NOT affect non-ants, and non-ant spells (like the cleric's healing spell) DO NOT affect ants.

Spiders regenerate 4 hp each turn.

ahh.. one correct, replace "ant" with "spider" if you see it. I was origninally going to have this be an ant army, but i like the spider idea better (more variation, cooler looking, etc).

nother correction: the queen would count as two units.

The quenn is a nice idea; however, you would have to strategize how many baby spiders you wanted and how many other units you wanted on the field. I liked the other spiders, especially the one with paralisis, but it should be affective only 50 or 75% of the time because other wise its just like the Ice Golem or Enchantress.

the baby spiders would give you more than the legal ten units

hmm.. i can see having a 50% chance to paralyis, but the attack IS blockable, so if they blocked it than they would not get paralysed in the first place. yeah.. 50%-75% makes sense too. and no, you would NOT be over the 10 unit limit if you had:
1 queen (2 units)
1 widow (1 unit)
1 spitting (1 unit)
1 tarantula (1 unit)

= 5 units total which is LESS than 10. now.. if you wanted to max on units, than obviously you wouldn't be using the queen (until you started losing units that is). even if you had 2 of each (cept for the queen, you wouldn't be able to have 2 queens) that would only put you are 8 units, so you could STILL make babies.

if the black widow hits a unit that is all alone...

that unit basically is dead...

hits it... paralysis for 3 turns... widow recovers in 1 or 2 turns...

hits it again... unblockable... reparalyzed.. back up to 3..
etc...

and so what? first off, i have agreed that there should only be a 50% chance to paralze, and then include the chance to block (at least for the 1st paralysis). next.. when would that occur? as soon as i did that once the other team's buddies would come in to cream the spider (because generally NO unit is EVER left alone for a long period of time). finally.. what about the enchantress? if she paralyzes a unit that unit is basically dead as well, since it can't block and so it an easy target for my other units. soo.. i don't see a problem here.

if the attack is blocked, than the paralysis doesn't occur. imagine the spider trying to bite you, if it does.. then you are paralyized, if it doesn't.. then your not! its that simple. I don't really see how this is any worse than the enchantress or golem. With her, she can paralyse MULTIPLE people, and she will always paralyze (ie: there is not a 50% chance that it would not work). with the golem, his paralysis has RANGE (4 spaces), so its also pprobably more deadly (ie: he can paralyze a guy while staying back to avoid retaliation). besides, it is VERY rare for there ever to be one unit alone, so if i was able to paralyze a unit, than the others would immediatly pounce on the spider.

u can have the queen hide behind knights and prduce like armoies of non stop spiders

not really.. she has a 5 turn recovery, which means that its takes like 10 turns to make 3 baby spiders (if she stayes still). also keep in mind that she CANNOT be in the very back row because then the spiders couldn't come out, and so she would be prey to witch, scout, pyro attacks pretty easily. Though, just to make her a little weaker, i think she would start with 0 armor, and 40 hp (that plus whatever other spiders you have to add bonuses). However, keep in mind that useful spells such as the cleric spell or barrier spell DO NOT affect the spiders, so you can't endlessly heal her/protect her (regneration rate should be more like 3 as well). whee i love discussions.

any more thoughts? tweaks?

The knights should be able to step on the spiders or something...

HAHAHAHAHA... umm.. yeah.. just imagine these spiders to be BIG spiders.... like Shelob (from LoTR) :)
now.. have a knight try to step on THAT.
