All-Round Season Sign-Ups.

What Is This?

This new tourny will be one of the largest TAO has seen for a long time. We're hoping for entries in the 60s/70s. The tourny will be split into 3 overall leagues (Rookie, Pro and Vet. I'll get to this in a moment), with roughly 6-8 players per division. Theoretically, it'll be run with about 3-4 divisions per league, with the forementioned 6-8 players per league. Each person plays every person in their division once, and the top 2 players with the best records will be promoted the next league/division, while the 2players with the least scores will be demoted. Also, there will be a playoff style draw at the end of the overall season, where the top 16 (based on total points!) will fight it out in a best of 3 knock-out tourny. This draw will pit the person at 1st against 16th, 2nd against 15th, etc. Further details are at the bottom. Top 16 is a tentative figure, as it depends on the number of entrants we get. The more, the merrier!

The Board:

There are 6 members that are EXTREMLY active and fair, forming a board of members. In the beginning of the season, the board has a say in which players are playing in what leagues, based on their Bio's that they have written. Obviously, activity is a major bonus. This would work on the principle of someone like Search66 signing up. He would hopefully be denied as he is relatively inactive. The boardmembers will not judge by skill but by activity for recruitment. But most people won't be judged on unless there is a problem.

Brackets:

When you sign up, you give yourselves a Bios. We're looking for your strengths and weaknesses, where you think you rank on the Rookie, Vet, Pro scale (Pro being the highest, Rookie the lowest), and a stat-based guideline just in case we feel the League numbers are somewhat inbalanced. We (the board) then make the groups relatively even. It will be done based on the information you give us in your Bios, so please keep them accurate! If there are any fair objections (not n00bish "I don't want to play him - he'll pwnz0r me!), please make them heard, and we'll see what can be done.

The Playoffs:

As stated previously, the Playoffs will run after the regular season, to be fought best of 3, one game in each style. Each match-up will have a week to finish. There will be a schedule. Each match will have a HOME and an AWAY player, decided by their standings at the end of the regular season. The HOME player has Home field advantage, meaning they get choice of the order of games, and fair rules set for these games. The regular season/playoffs/championships will take about 5-6 months to complete, hopefully. This gives time for 5 runs through the leagues, and 1 month for playoffs. :) Remember, this tournament is about playing to your level. Finishing the season in the top half of the league is definitely a bonus as you get to set fair rules in the playoffs!


Prizes:

1st Place Regualr Season: Best seed in Playoffs; and Grey drop on server of choice.

1st Place Finals: Avy of choice. 3 month gold.
2nd place Finals: Grey drop, 2 month gold.
3rd Place Finals: Grey Drop, 1 month gold.

Final awards:
At the end of the season there will be awards handed out and the winners will recive userbars.

***All prizes are not promised. Don't get your hopes up. If you are in it for the Avy and drops don't sign up. This tourney is really for bragging rights, fun, practice, and to have games.

I will be very active when the league starts... As for now I'd say I'd probably be an upper rookie to vet ( i believe the lower class was rookie). I may change to pro simply because there's a lack of able competition in vet by comparison, but since my gaming on TAO has been grey-dominant since I got back, I figure my tournament bracketing might as well be as well.

Well, I've been playing since 2003 but I may not be that good as I used to be but sign me up as a vet.

I'll sign up (note sig!). I don't anticipate much success, but it sounds like a good way to get some good games with better players.

I'd like to sign up for pro, though realistically, looking at the current signup lists I'd surely fit better as veteran or rookie. I used to have grey skills certainly at the pro level but it's been a long time since I played much of it. I would still say I'm a pro in that area, despite rust.

I've dabbled in turtling and freestyle here and there and have had some nice wins but overall I'd have to consider myself somewhere between vet and rookie in both categories. I put considerable time into attempting to master the grey game, so I came to understand it pretty well. I have not done anything of the sort with gold in either category, so typically I end up flying blind and playing by instinct (though I'd say my instincts are pretty good). I would much rather be placed in a higher category so I can play better players (if I don't get pwned in every single game, I'm not going to be satisfied; I'm doing this to improve my mediocre gold skills and exercise my stiff grey muscles). So please put me as a vet.

As far as activity, I'll get the games done if the people in my division cooperate. I'm active in the sense that I will check my PM box on a daily basis and send PMs that often if need be, and I can certainly manage at least one game a week, unless it's during finals or something. I'm an extremely dedicated student these days and I have a girlfriend, so I won't be on 24/7.

In case no one could guess, I will be representing SI.

The idea is to play one style to get into the playoffs, and play all styles in the playoffs. If you REALLY want, I don't see why you can't enter in all 3, but your overall score would be divided by the number of leagues you are in, making it harder to qualify as you would need to be strong in all 3 to do really well.

Thanks for the suggestion, Sangro. The idea behind people rating themselves individually by what they think they're rank is (and what the board "knows") is so that people who want to play higher up can do so, and those who try to sneak past in a weaker league won't get that priviledge.

Forgive my noobishness but I can't seem to figure out what exactly the deal is.

Do I play all the greys in all fields? All the vets? Who am I going to be playing and in what styles? Because my strongest is grey, does that mean I only play grey?

With the number of grey players currently involved, there will be at least 2 leagues for greys. Judging by the current signups, it'll be 2 grey leagues of 7. I'll try my best to keep the "Pros" with the pros and the like, however as the tourny gets underway,there will be league promotions, and demotions. The top 2 in each league will be promoted, while the bottom 2 demoted (unless they're in the top/bottom leagues respectively).

This would mean, that if a pro player signed up as a rookie, he/she would get a lot more points by beating out all the rookies and vets before he/she would ever have to play someone of their own skill level, which would allow for them to have a huge number of points.

Well, we'll between the 6 judges, we should know all of the pros/vets, so there shouldn't be a problem of one trying to sneak into the rookie section.

We have 2 judges from GL and 1 from Banff. Then 2 mods. 1 Originated in Army so I think that if there is a questionable person, we will take care of it accordingly.

If we get enough for about 16 in each style, that would be fine. That would allow for 2leagues of 8 :\

Ideally, 24 would be nice, as this would allow 3leagues of 8. By the looks of things though, that ideal isn't going to happen. :(

I could easily break 1800. I have this thing called a life, and a career. I frequently travel for weeks to play bridge. I had a 1 week time period to go from 1700 to 1800. Add to that that I played anyone and everyone who would give me 1 stat as long as it was their main name, and I got jumped by people playing on names that were 400 points below their actual rating under a false pretense who take the game wayyyyyy too seriously just to sabotage me. And those who I could always beat and had 1400+ stats would rarely play me. I made it to 1798 in 5 days. How many times have you done that, and done it with honor?

I also play for fun. Sitting their trying to entice people to play and then having jackasses like you do what you did was not fun. Gold was not fun. So I let others play on the account and started playing grey again, where I've been having fun.

Stats are not an issue for me. I'm sure if I felt like it I could make it to 2000. Please note this is not because I'm a great player, it's just because the stat system is flawed and if you are near the top of your server you can inflate your stats relatively easily with some time and effort. It's not about what I can do, it's what I want to do and what I have fun doing, because in the end it's just a game and thats what it comes down to.

In SI, you don't need to be a leader to vote. You just have to be a recruiter. At the time I was a recruiter (I checked the archives, it was a very long thread about this).

As far as pwning me, we played once, it was a year ago at least, it was a tryout game (more proof I was a recruiter actually), and we tied. You were using the default set and I was trying you out and didnt take you seriously. I will be happy to pwn you in the upcoming grey tourney and in this tourney as well, but since you won't make it to the playoffs I guess that won't happen ;)

Arawn, assuming you make it through the initial group stages, you will have to play gold games too. I advise Rev as all golds "should" have an account there, however I'm not bothered so long as the games get played. =)

On an aside, can we get 2more turtlers and 3 more freestylers please? I don't care who. Leagues of 8 keeps things even in my mind. If we can get those numbers in I'll start working on league tables before the weekend. Tentatively this starts this weekend, otherwise on Monday. :)
