Just a quick pop-in...hopped on Floater on MLK Jr. day (no classes...) and was immediately jumped by some guy named iannolo. He was pretty good, and I admit he outplayed my rusty self for the first 3/4 of the game. I had one of those corner sets with 3 knights, frost, etc. and he had a weird center set with a DSM and frost.
Anyway, 3/4 of the way through, he had: 50 frost, 50 knight, 53 dragon, and 20 DSM. I had 46 health knight, 50 mud, full frost, and cleric. My attackers were up in his area (top) while my cleric and frost languished in the corner. I thought I was pretty much done, so I didn't take s/s, which is regrettable.
Before I go into more details, I'll say that while what happened is pretty cool, he did make a few bad calls, without which, no matter how well I played, I was done. Anyway, I'll try and make sense without visual aids.
His turn. All units are ready to go, except his DSM with 2-turn wait, and my cleric with 2-turn. The DSM is out of walking / moving range of either of my units. He attacks my knight from the side with his knight. Hit. Knight is now at 29.
My turn. Knight attacks frost. Frost at 28.
His turn. Moves his powered-down dragon closer to the action.
Mine. Mud moves up, ground pound. 10 damage to frost, 8 damage to his knight, 4 damage to mine. That, obviously, was not a great move on my part. His frost and knight at 18 and 42 respectively, my knight at 25.
His. Can see what's coming here. DSM burns knight. Knight at 5. A heal won't save it from a knight hit.
Mine. But it'd be stupid to heal, since if he scored a knight hit on the next turn, I'd be dead. So knight kills frost.
His. Powered-down dragon kills knight.
Mine. Mud still has 1 turn left, so nothing doing there. I pass.
His. Knight attacks mud, mud at 28.
Mine. Mudquake. Knight at 31. Mud moves 5 spaces away.
His. All his units are on wait. He passes.
Mine. Heal. Mud up to 40.
His. Knight advances towards mud. This is where I think he’s making his first big mistake. The knight is coming towards the mud, but the dragon and DSM aren’t able to hit it in one turn, even if their wait times were cleared.
Mine. Got to pass again, mud’s still waiting.
His. Attacks mud with knight, muddy at 18.
Mine. Mudquake. Knight down to 20. Mud runs away again. It winds up in the bottom left corner of the board. My cleric and frost are in the bottom right.
His. DSM (which was near the top of the board) moves down towards the center.
Mine. Cleric still can’t go. I move my frost out 2 steps, mainly because I didn’t have anything else to do. It was this random move that probably saved me.
His. His attention caught by the frost, he diverts his knight, and heads toward my frost. I assume he did this since my cleric can heal next turn. He wouldn’t have been able to kill mud before that, and it could have run toward the frosty’s protection. I don’t know if this is a mistake or not, on his part. If my mud dies, I have no way to win. But, given the position of my units, I don’t think that, after the mud ran away, he would have been able to reach it with the units he had before one of them was ensnared by frost. And if he had attacked the mud, his knight would have been down to 9 health. So, for better or worse, he went towards my frost. I tend to think this was a mistake.
Mine. Heal. Mud at 30.
His. Knight moves towards frost some more. Knight can reach frost next turn if frost doesn’t move.
Mine. So, frost moves. It’s on the far right wall, near the back.
His. Knight moves again. 3 spaces away from frost.
Mine. Muddy moves over towards cleric and frost.
His. DSM moves towards the action. Here, without doubt, is his 3rd big mistake. Perhaps he was overconfident or just not paying attention, but I can now reach his DSM with my mud.
Mine. Mud’s still got a turn to burn. Frosty freezes knight.
His. Dragon moves up towards the action.
Mine. Mud moves to attempt a front hit on DSM. If it blocks, game over. Mud hits. 20-health DSM dies. 20 knight still frozen. 53 dragon has 1 turn to wait.
His. Pass.
Mine. Heal. Mud at 42.
His. From the positions, the only place dragon can hit mud is from 3 squares away. It does. Mud down to 14. At this point, I could force him to draw (since dragon is his only mobile unit) but at last I see that I can win this thing.
Mine. Pass.
His. Pass. (Dragon wait now 2 turns)
Mine. Mud moves to frozen knight, but does not hit it.
His. Pass (Dragon wait = 1)
Mine. Pass.
His. Pass.
Mine. Mud moves to opposite side of knight, so knight shields mud from dragon! Punch. Knight at 5.
His. No point in attacking frost (it’s ready to freeze again), so he moves dragon down towards everything. It’s hard to describe at this point, but the 1st dragon shot on the mud came from “above.” The mud is now “below” the frozen knight. Because of positioning, after the move he just made, the only opening to get the mud is from the right “side”.
Mine. The move that finally sealed the game. Cleric makes a pointless heal (hey, force of habit, what can I say) and walks up to guard the mud’s right side. Dragon can’t get it.
His. I don’t think he realized what was happening until that move. He takes a very long pause. No way out.

You win!!!

So, there you have it. The moral of the story is that I rock. Uh, no, the moral is not to be overconfident in the endgame, and if you’re down, there’s sometimes a chance. Granted, I needed to play it perfectly, and he needed to mess up a few times. If he’d had any other unit of any kind, he would have won without question. I thought he was going to win without question anyways…I just felt like mucking around, and look what happened.
So, that’s that. Hope this was interesting, and more importantly, that without pictures, it made sense.
