View Full Version : Tourney IDEA - tag team variant

Ok, to be very clear at the outset, this is an IDEA only (if the title wasn't clear enough). Even if people think this is a great idea, I am NOT volunteering to run this tourney.

I was thinking about tag team matches. The way they've run in the past, you play till you get knocked out. But in "real" tag team matches, if you get ko'd, your team loses. You can tag out when you're in trouble or when you want your fresh partner to crush the tired opponent. Hence, this idea.

The standard tag team rules apply, except that each team gets 2 "tag-outs." When a tag-out is used, the tagging player selects the teammate he wants to see take over. As soon as a tag-out is used, play in the present game immediately stops (at the end of the current turn). Tag-outs can only be called for by the player whose turn it is. (i.e. you can't stop your opponent from making a sure kill by tagging out during his turn). A tag-out can also be used before a game starts, as in the example below. If a tag-out is used, dead units stay dead, but wounded units will be at full health for the next game.

Example: A, B, and C are playing D, E, and F.

First game: A v. D. A kills D's cleric and scout, but in the process, A loses a scout, mud, and dragon, and his other scout is on the verge of death. For the sake of argument, let's assume A will go on to beat D, but when he does, he will be left with nothing useful at the end of the game, and E will flawless A's remainder. But if A tags out when the game reaches this point, he can preserve his units, including his almost-dead scout, and force D's depleted, cleric-less force to face B's team, with B at full strength. Of course, now D could tag out before his game with B and therefore bring E into the picture with E and B now playing at full strength.

In an alternate universe, D could manage to kill A's 2nd scout, then tag-out and have E come in. A has no range, so E should have an easy time, while D still has some powerful units (but no cleric) remaining.

(I hope it's obvious, but if no one tags out, then tourney play proceeds as normal, with A playing E, then if E beats A's remainder, E plays B, etc.)

(Possible) Pros: Makes team-planning and team-building even more important. Also, helps to ensure that one player doesn't carry a team as much as was possible before. Teams can use different strategies - e.g. A needs to have cleric-killing units, and as soon as he does that, he tags out, and B's power turtle comes in to mop up. Or whatever. Could make things interesting - do you press an advantage and try to knock someone out, or do you tag, and hope your partner(s) can flawless the remainder, knowing that if the remainder kills one of your partner's units, you've then lost a big advantage?

(Possible) Cons: This is a logistical nightmare. The tourney organizer(s) would have to require lots of s/s, and people would have to be very reliable, because teams would not be getting eliminated as quickly as normal. This is (somewhat) alleviated by only allowing 2 tag-outs per team, but still...I can see this stretching on. So that is the single biggest downside. Also, I'm willing to admit that maybe this isn't as neat as it appeared to be in my head.

Anyway, discuss, debate, have at it. I won't be participating in or helping run this tourney, but if someone does run it, give me some credit, dangit!

And if this idea is universally decided to to be really stupid, then I can live with that, too. Just trying to come up with something to change the pace of the standard tourney operation.

This sounds like it could be fun.

Looks interesting, I'll read the whole thing, instead of just the first 3 paragraphs when I get back from school.
