Define/Enforce Banner Regulations/Make more present to read

I'm seeing a lot of big, flashy, banners. Yes, I have one. But 1. Only 1. Crap. Then there's the userbar. But I'm seeing people with larger banners, and more banners.


The point is, I was going through a thread today, and I was trying to scroll down, but my computer lagged out. This shouldn't be happening, because I'm using a 1 year old computer that was top of the line when I made it. And I don't get lag anywhere else, even in graphics intensive games. Now, there's something wrong here. I propose that we do one of three things.

1. Keep the old regulations, but ...

Make them a sticky. This will make it so people don't have the excuse of having not seen them. Because then, they're just digging themselves further. Enforce these rules with something like temporary removal of the signature area, so that they cannot further do this. Still allow a little variance from the max, possibly making it a sort of size regulations like hosting it on TAO.

Pros: Not really a way out from the terror. Break it, and there's no excuse. Still a little area for niceness.

Cons: Not many people seem to read the stickies. Those that do have a tendency to stick with us, and in general are smarter posters and better people. Also, if mods aren't paying attention, they've still got the banners there.

2. Force all banners to be done via the banner uploading. This would mean no one could excessively add banners to the thing. Keep the standard uploading size, and allow a small area for text and links. Disable the [img] tag in signatures.

Pros: All data is limited. No one could go over the allowed space. It's also low maintenance.

Cons: A lot of space would be used up by the server, which = bad.

3. Keep the same rules, but flame all violators to nonexistence. Yea, sorta like what I try to do now. But unsuccessfully. (Me, not the idea, the idea is me on a grande scale, blown up in proportion to a place where it shouldn't be.)

Pros: We've gotta spread rep somehow, don't we?

Cons: More squirrels will get rabies.

Um.. looks like an.. OK idea because the siggies do get annoying. But, it's probably the forums themselves lagging if you have a good computer. My computer is OK, and it has never lagged out. Anyway, it's not like this is actually going to happen, but I like how you presented you idea unlike other people.

Exactly. And you don't want to adblock them, because it seems rude and you know that in good filters, you must addblock all or none.

In EVERY SINGLE forum section there is an announcem,ent of "Forum Rules" wherein is contained the rules for signatures, ie ONE banner 600x140 with two additional lines of text. (or any combination equaling that was always allowed)

This is in every single forum section, ABOVE any and all stickies.

And Coder, in Adblock you can block specific images, so if a signature image is too big, simply adblock THAT IMAGE, and you will never see it again. In fact, to make it "all or nothing" takes additional work to do.

You're not by any means owned it, nor do you deserve the feature, but it's there. At some point, scrolling down becomes scrolling down a little more, and then a little more, and then it gets out of hand. The line has to be drawn somewhere to make it so it isn't ridiculous, and it was decided a while ago on what the guidelines were. We enforced it back then, took a break, enforced, took a break, etc etc. Now we're sending PM's out again.

The rules for banners are there... everywhere. All we need to do is find the few people who choose to disregard them, tell them what they're doing wrong, and then we've solved this "huge" problem.
There are actually fewer people with unacceptable signatures out there than you're making it seem like there are.

I had a program that did this for me, it made about 2 accounts a minute. Trust me, they don't get bored. Realist thrives on it. In the end, they can just make it admin authorized sign ups, they have before.

Dape, they have enforced it before many times. The fact that they relaxed about it is only a technicality, it is still a rule which can be enforced upon you. You have no rights here. If Xerent truly wanted, he could delete only your sig, nobody else's, for the rest of your life.

I'm not talking about scrolling, you idiot. Did you bother reading what I had said? It's about how large amounts of images slow bandwidth. And that leads to it getting slow. I also said that a bit of space for all, beyond the normal size, should be allowed. Just try not to push it if you can.
