Well, it's been a while since I posted here, so it's only fitting I make a post in this section. For those that don't know me too well, I'm one of the leaders of SI, though I haven't been too active in these forums.

I thought the time was right to re-introduce Strategic Insomniacs to the TAO community. We've been around for a long time by TAO standards obviously, but have not been TAO-centered for a while now, and newer members of the community may not know exactly what SI stands for.

What does it mean to be part of SI?

SI is more than an online community, it’s an online family

I guess that’s the best way to sum it up. From day one, we’ve always tried to cultivate a feeling of kinship and of friends and of belonging. Sure, there are disagreements occasionally and blowups. Those will happen whenever two or more people are in a room together, never mind people from different parts of the world are online together! We have clanmates from all over – US, Europe, Australia. I know countries that don’t have the tolerance we display in our everyday dealings with each other. Ultimately, once you’re in SI, you’re accepted for who you are, and you have friends who will become part of an online family. It’s something to be proud of.

We respect each other but don’t take each other too seriously. SI is a place to have fun.

This is self explanatory. If you want a place where everybody is driving to the number one spot, to the exclusion of all else, SI probably isn’t for you. If you hate losing, and are a poor sport about it and grumble about it after for days on end, SI isn’t for you. We joke, we clown, we poke fun at each other within reasonable limits.

We’re still good at what we do.

We’ve still got some of the best players around, and we continue to attract many more. We take in people who have potential, and we train them to be better players. We help newbs, we spread the clan name. We’re part of an elite.

We have principles.

You’ll be surprised how many clans or people fail on those 3 words above. We don’t cheat and we don’t lie. We encourage good sportsmanship. We don’t do just what is legally acceptable, we strive to do more. We stand for what we believe in.

How do I join?

Common Requirements:

Make a forum account on the SI forums at www.4thfactor.com.
Make a thread in the "Interested in Joining" forum section:
State your server, stats, and previous clans and if you feel like it, why you left them. Tell us something about yourself and also why you wish to join SI.


Banff And Armageddon:

Play recruiters or leaders until you get 2 YES votes from them to join. You need 1 extra YES vote for every NO vote you receive. I.e, to get invited, your final vote tally must be something like 2-0, 3-1, 4-2, etc.


Great Lakes and Revelations:

If a leader plays you or sees you and decides to invite you, you are in.
If a player recommends you and a leader has no problems with you they will invite on sight.
If a recruiter or leader votes against you, you need to obtain an extra YES vote for every NO vote you receive. I.e, to get invited, your final vote tally must be something like 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, etc.

Are There Any Clan Rules?

These are our published Rules of Conduct, that all clan members should adhere to. It’s the first time we’re making this public, but it’s not like it’s a great secret or anything. We’re not just a TAO-based clan anymore, so these are generic rules.

Our Founding Principles for Any Game

Promote better game play.
Anyone can kill a noob. We must mold better opponents.
Promoters not whiners or runners.
Got to be willing to have fun.


General Etiquette:

Don't be a bully just because you can.
In TAO, this refers to golds jumping greys. This is because you have an overwhelming tactical advantage due to your units. However, grey fishing is allowed, basically because you are issuing an open challenge to any player in the lobby. A similar principle should apply to every type of game where SI is.
Be gracious in both victory and defeat.
Sportmanship is an important aspect of any member of SI. If you were defeated fair and square, please be gracious about it. Similarly, do not gloat over a defeated opponent. In the same vein, play fairly and do not use techniques in game to frustrate your opponent such as taunts, stalling, etc.
Boosting / Cheating is absolutely forbidden.
SI isn't a particularly stat or ranking obsessed clan. However, we tend to have high stats/rankings because we are skilled and we earn them fairly. If you have to cheat to earn your stats or points in whatever game we are in, then you will face immediate expulsion from the clan.
No spamming in the lobby or in game.
Having fun with your friends is one thing, deliberately spamming the lobby or in game is quite another. Please be considerate of other people.
Have an open mind to share and help others progress.
Part of being a clan is to readily help each other experiment with different strategies and formations. If you have something which you think gives you an advantage, it would be good to share it in the forums. Also, be open to assist those players outside the clan which may request help in-game or conversely, be willing to hear their ideas as well.

General Clan Rules

Loyalty to your name and clan.
It is discouraged to be in another clan on the same server you are in SI. This is a matter of loyalty and not having conflicting interests. SI should be the only 'true' clan for its members. For example, being in SI and being an active member of another clan, helping it grow, posting in it's forums, calling yourself a member of that clan, etc. wouldn't be appropriate. However, being on SI on one server does not mean you have to be SI on all servers, though we would like you to. Grey chatting accounts are permitted, but not exactly encouraged.
Promotions
All there several levels of clan membership. For instance, in TAO, there are normal members, recruiters and leaders. The titles aren't there for people to have extra status - there is a whole lot of responsibility that comes with each title, and those that have them have to pull their weight. There is a sort of unwritten rule that publicly asking for promotion to recruiter/leader is frowned upon...but exceptions have been known to happen.
SI does not WAR.
This is more TAO-specific than the other rules. SI does not normally participate in Clan Wars for several good reasons. Friendly tournaments and competitions are different, and encouraged. There has only been a single exception to this, and it took much discussion among the leaders and it didn't even come to a satisfactory conclusion. So don't be expecting a war against other clans.
Don't take it all too seriously.
When it comes down to it, it is just a game. Friendships built over a game shouldn't be able to be torn down easily over something that happens in a game. The bigger things in life are more important. Real life > SI > Video Games. Bear that in mind, and you'll get along fine. We are here to have fun, and a good time. So...we don't particularly care too much about rankings and stats, though we will rise to the challenge when we need to.

Updated 1st post with some small changes to leaders / recruiters.

Cuathon is indeed a Banff recruiter and Razor2007 is back and giving us a hand again for a while.

I am glad to say that our recruitment drive has yielded some positive results so far, and am hoping that in the long run, we'll gain some solid members. Many thanks to all the active leaders and recruiters!

Updated Leader info:

Razor2007 is active enough now that he has taken on some leader responsibility again and will be helping on Banff and GL.

Unfortunately, el opit@ is starting to get busy with his last semester in Uni, so he may not be on as often.

Also, we're starting to see a slight rise in Meltivitiy again on our SI forums, so you may encounter Meletus now and then on the servers. Here's a little tidbit chart that AoL put up (don't ask me why he bothers!) :*dntknw:

Some changes to the recruitment rules and the 1st post has been edited.

Armageddon requirements have been tightened to follow Banff which means that an additional vote from a leader / recruiter is required.

Also, due to recent events in Legends, Jonspen has been removed from SI TAO leadership and membership for the next 6 months. Dape will also be permanently denied membership on all clans of SI, in any game.

I've played on legends a lot, and i've never got one, but still... If you don't want to get jumped, don't give anyone the opportunity. With the high rated, and high skilled greys there it's ALMOST a legitimate form of gameplay. While I personally don't jump greys on legends, I don't see it as a bad thing, and when I played a bit of grey there I welcomed a challenge :)
