We're going to start up Mafia again in a bit.

I want to get a headcount of everyone interested in playing.

Please please PLEASE follow instructions. Here. I'll label them clearly for you.

INSTRUCTION #1) If you cannot reasonably log in once a day to participate, then do not join. This game requires people's interaction, and for them to be fairly on top of things. Obviously life gets in the way, and I understand. But if you're just being a butt grenade, then maybe we don't want you around for Mafia 6. (oh no3s!)

INSTRUCTION #2) If you think you can participate frequently, reply to this thread, stating that you're interested.

OPTIONAL INSTRUCTION #3) It would help for people to also, in the same post, say how many Mafia's they've been in before, and what role's they have played... or if this is their first Mafia.

Things will be done a stitch differently than when MG or Uniq ran the previous Mafia's. Not because I think that things will be better, I just operate differently, so that will be reflected in how the game is run. In short, don't expect things to be the same. Please read directions as they are posted, like you have never played this game before. They'll go smoothly, I promise. :)

Mafia 5 Rules

Introduction


- Mafia is a forum game of deceit an intrigue. A small community tries to purge the malicious hackers from within, while the hackers try and play both ends against the middle, dissolving the community until there is nothing left. It's a race against time for all parties, and only one can be victorious!

- Each person playing will be given a role to assume throughout the game. Everyone involved will be using the abilities of their role in order to accomplish their tasks, usually trying to 'delete' someone else. The twist is, no-one knows who anyone else's role is! You have to use all your cunning to try and determine if your teammates are friend or foe!

Gameplay


- The game is played in rounds. Each round lasts about 1 day, but can last up to 2. Each round is divided into 'Day' and 'Night'. During the Day, users collaborate and secretly vote off who they think to be hackers. A user can vote as many times as he or she wishes during the day.

- Once the majority of votes (50% or greater) point to one person, -OR- once the day is over, the person with the most votes gets deleted. It is then that their role is revealed for everyone to see, if they were an innocent User, or a tricky Hacker.

- After the Day phase, the Night phase begins. The Hackers (and other users with night-time actions) collaborate and determine who they want to target. Once all targets have been identified, or when the Night is over, the deleted users are revealed, and the Night turns back to Day.

- Day actions happen at the end of the day, Night actions happen at the end of the night, except where noted.

Cardinal Rules


- Pretty much anything goes. People are encouraged to lie, cheat, and steal their way to victory. Forum posting, AIM conversations, whatever. Sitting silently, or professing your innocence to anyone who's willing to listen also helps. But there are a couple rules that you must follow.

- CARDINAL RULE #1) DO NOT SHOW YOUR PM'S TO ANYONE. This means, do not give anyone access to your account in order to 'prove' your role. Do not copy/paste your PM, do not in any way, shape, or form, display it in any manner. People who are caught doing this will automatically be removed, and possibly not welcome in future Mafia's.

- CARDINAL RULE #2) IF YOU ARE DELETED, YOU ARE OUT OF THE GAME. IF YOU ARE NOT PLAYING, THEN DO NOT PLAY. You're obviously welcome to talk about it (preferably outside of this thread.) but do not play if you are not playing. Do not give game-altering hints if you're not in it, etc etc. People who are caught doing are possibly not welcome in future Mafia's.

- CARDINAL RULE #3) STAY ACTIVE. We need you to stick around for this to be fun. If you're going away, let us know. If you're gone for too long without any notice, We have to drop you from the game to keep it going, and not lagging behind.

Guidelines


- Play this game like it's your first. Roles will be assigned randomly, so don't look on previous Mafia's to try and guess who may be what. Use evidence from this game.

- The most powerful asset is your deductive skills. Obviously some roles are more potent than others, but the best thing you have going for you is your cunning. The more people actively playing this game, the more fun it is. A common role actively played is infinitely better than a rare role squandered on the majority.

Mafia 5 Roles

Hacker

Alignment: Hacker

- Hackers may collectively vote to delete one user every 'Night'.
- Hackers know who other Hackers are. (This includes 1337 Hacker.) (Though not the Lonely Hacker.)
- The Hackers win if the Hacker-aligned players hold the majority of the roles (50% or greater).
- Hackers may also attempt to recruit the N00b Hacker into their midst during the 'Night'. The n00b Hacker becomes a regular Hacker the following 'Day'.


1337 Hacker

Alignment: Hacker

- This Hacker may delete one user every 'Night' on his own.
- The 1337 Hacker knows who other Hackers are. (Though not the Lonely Hacker.)
- The Hackers win if the Hacker-aligned players hold the majority of the roles (50% or greater).
- This role appears as 'User' to the Moderator.


Virus

Alignment: Hacker

- The Virus may, during the 'Night', replace any abilities of a person with those of a User for the next 'Day'.
- The Virus wins if the Hacker-aligned players hold the majority of the roles (50% or greater).


Hacker Hunter

Alignment: Themself

- The Hacker Hunter is convinced that three certain people are hackers.
- The Hacker Hunter wins the game if these three people are killed.


User

Alignment: User

- Users may collaborate every 'Day' to collectively delete one person.
- Users may cast one vote. This vote may be a regular vote, or a negative vote (A negative vote counters a regular vote made against a person).
- Users when the game when all Hackers are deleted.


Veteran User

Alignment: User

- This user's vote counts twice.


1337 User

Alignment: User

- The 1337 User may delete one person during the night. (Like the Vigilante.)
- The 1337 User may moderate one person during the day. (Like the Moderator.)
- The 1337 User may investiage one person during the day. (Like the Investigator.)
- The 1337 User may install anti-virus software on one computer. (Like the Technician.)
- The 1337 User may use each ability only once during the entire game.
- The 1337 User may only use one ability per 24 hour period.


Backup User

Alignment: User

- This user may sacrifice him/herself during the 'Night'. If done, He/She may revive the most recently killed person.


Paranoid User

Alignment: User

- This user randomly kills people that target him with votes during the 'Night'.
- This user has no control over thier ability.
- This ability happens before the Hacker's targets are deleted.



Moderator

Alignment: User

- A Moderator may, once a day, pick a person to determine thier Alignment.
- 'Neutral', or 'Themself' alignments will show up as 'Users'.


Investigator

Alignment: User

- An Investigator may, once a day, pick a person to determine if they have an role other than user. If so, the Investigator will be informed this this users role is special. (But won't be told what it actually is.)


Vigilante

Alignment: User

- A Vigilante may delete any one person during the night.
- The Vigilante may only use his ability twice.


Firewall

Alignment: User

- This user is immune at any deletion attempts made by non-users.


Technician

Alignment: User

- This user may install anti-virus software on any one users computer during the 'Day'. This makes that user immune to the Virus for the following 'Night' only. (Stupid Norton Updates)


Hacker Hunter Target

Alignment: ???

- The Hacker Hunter Target has this role in addition to thier true role.
- The Hacker Hunter Target does not know that they are also a Hacker Hunter Target.

*Role usage depends on number of people playing. Not all roles may be used.

As a note on Uni's comment. Uni wanted a simplistic Mafia to run and have it be fun.

I'm taking it to the other extreme. It's a bit more work, but I think it will be enjoyable in itself. more people get a chance to be a crazy role, and there's more interactions going on. Maybe too many, but we'll see. (Thanks Uni!)

I would be interested in seeing how this turns out, but will not be playing. This is very complicated, something that I would rather observe then be a part of. Good luck making this a fun game, because in my opinion there is going to be more confusion and controversy over all of these roles then there will be enjoyable gameplay.

Mafia is only fun when everyone is active. As much as I hate admitting it, the only reason that AU and I won the last round was because like 6 or 7 people didn't do anything. Expect to get home and read like 20 pages people, don't join unless you're sure you can do it.

Honestly, any activity I did have during the game should be seen as a negative, because I was literally killed before I was permitted to do anything. Regardless of what you might think, I was amoung the top three most active players in round 3, and probably would have been so had I not died before the game even started.

Exactly. I'm declaring to the community that I'm playing the socalled "anti-game" strategy as long as possible. I'm not going to try and run the show (as I did in game 3). Then again, I am not being unresponsive. If you want to talk to me, send me a PM, I WILL get back to you probably within 2 hours. Even though I was literally only alive for 5 hours, I was actively talking to several players via AIM and PM as Mushroom girl can certainly attest to.

Since I'm probably going to get collectively thrown in the well today, I might as well make some few points, as I won't be able to talk anymore after this.

a) To MG's comment that I'm inexperienced, to a certain extent, yes, I've never played this game online before. However, I have played this in RL, which is both easier and more difficult. I'm confident that many of the rules still apply.

b) To all the people voting for inactives, that's really not the way to go. Notice that no one's been firewalled yet. That means that one of the inactives is probably the technician, ala we shouldn't collectively mug the inactives.

c) Like MG said, at least one of the hackers is active currently. However, I do not believe both are active, as I'm thinking that they're having one hacker just remain incognito, playing like the innocent user, while the other hacker is very outspoken, trying to influence others' votes.

d1) I find it interesting that the hackers would hack MicSpoor, as her last post (s) were not entirely relevant the the IC gameplay. This suggests a personal objection on the hackers' part to her actions. From personal experience as a mafia (hacker), I've eliminated annoying people and/or people I just didn't like first round out of spite. Thus, I think it may be too early to draw conclusions on who the hacker is based on this first round elimination.

d2) That being said, I still think that the elimination of MicSpoor by the hackers means that either a) they don't believe the active people are enough of a threat to figuring out their existence b) both hackers are part of the active bunch.

e) WTC is up with the 1337 user account? It hasn't been active since page 8, and why would someone w/ the 1337 user ability reveal that they're using it so early? This makes me think that the 1337 user account is actually being run by a hacker that wants to know if people have special roles, so they can target those "dangerous people" first. This lends more reasoning to why MicSpoor would be killed first round, as she had a special role.

f) Will post more later, provided I'm not dead the next time I'm on.

Later in the game, if the technician becomes active, and it seems like the hackers are winning, the mod should reveal him/herself. Normally, I'd agree with you on that point but this time I just can't. There's a difference between just being quiet and just being inactive. Not only has HW not said anything in the mafia thread, he hasn't said anything on any thread of the forums since Friday. That makes me think that HW is inactive and hasn't had the chance to see what's been going on. Now, keep in mind that 2 regular hackers + 1 1337 hacker = 2 people gone, yet only Mic was hacked last night. It's possible that HW didn't get the chance to kill a target because he hasn't been online.

I realize that it's early in the game and that I could be way off but something is better than nothing.

I didn't vote for him for fun. I'm sure other people are thinking along the same logic as me. It's easier to vote off inexperienced players than to vote off experienced players who could easily be helpful to my side.

Mag is now being suspected because he knew something about Micspor. As soon as he found out something about her, she was killed. That's either careless planning on the hacker's part, or very smart planning to frame Mag. Just saying it's really easy to frame people that way. You can't just think "OMG HACKER" because you could be falling into the hackers trap. You need to find out more information about a player who has information like that before you just kill them. That's how moderators were killed in the past.

I haven't been online. I logged off after the hackers attacked last night to see who was taken out, and spent most of my day trying to fathom why only one person was hacked.

I can't see anyone who really stands out as being inactive, apart from possibly Hatchet, kegs and iceman, so I'm inclined to think one of the hackers didn't realise Punishment was deleted for cheating, and was inactive in the time between the vote and the hackings. Why don't we start by looking through those few hours?

I see what you're saying, but do you pay attention to any of the past mafias? The people who are suspected for knowing too much in the beginning end up being something helpful. Now, I'm not saying that Mag isn't a hacker, but I'm saying that you can't prove it right now. Also Mag's played here in the past, he understands how the game is played here.

Azer's played in real life, but it's not the same as here. I think that Azer is smart, but again, it's easier to vote off an inexperienced player than a player who's had more practice, especially since the roles were picked at random this time.

They're both potential candidates, but I would rather risk someone new than a veteran player. It's nothing personal, I like Azer. But I hope you all understand where I'm coming from. If it turns out that Mag gets more suspicious later on, and we have more conclusive evidence, then I'll vote for him.
