Hell to Pay by Simon R. Green:
8.5/10
This is the 7th book in a series that takes place in the dark and fearsome imaginary heart of London called the Nightside. This one was interesting because normally the main character, a detective, can use his gift that finds things automatically. This time his gift was blocked, so it was old school detective work for him, which was neat.
I highly recommend picking up this series from the beginning (Something From the Nightside). It's truly an amazing and macabre series, and the books are only about 200 pages each.

These "pick-up artists" are effing amazing... They know the frames of a conversation, who holds dominance in a crowd, the four things you have to hit to make a girl feel attracted and turned on. Blah blah blah...
They tell countless stories of how they can get literally any woman in 15 minutes or less as well as techniques you can try and apply also.

R. Scott Bakker - Prince of nothing trilogy.
If you are like me, (and you probably aren't) you loved fantasy as you were growing up. The problem is, fantasy stayed aimed at the same age and crowd while you stopped wanting to wear frilly pirate shirts and actually know what it is like to talk to a girl.
Somewhere, I lost fantasy. I grew out of it and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find something that really caught me, made me say 'shit, I can't put this down, I need to keep going'.
I don't have anything against George R.R. Martin, but I had to force myself to finish his first book and the idea of continuing was as appealing as a root canal. The man is a gifted writer, his technique is wonderful... but there was something missing, for me. I kept thinking throughout the book, 'This new and revolutionary style he has brought to the fantasy genre is... (drum roll) randomly killing characters you didn't think would die'. That was about it.
Again.. I can't say there is anything terribly wrong about Martin. But there was something that just didn't live up to its hype. It was still fantasy for 15 year olds, to me.
So I gave up on fantasy; I figured it was time to move on. Then I one of my best friends suggested Prince of nothing to me. Last chance for the genre to redeem itself, so to speak.
Well, to say it shortly the book (s) delivered. This is the first time I skipped my sleep just to finish a book, thats how good it was. The only drawback was the ending in the third book, but then I discovered that a new one has come out so I can't wait to get my hands on that one.

Ahh boo lemon :(. I love the A Song of Ice and Fire series. I'm a big fantasy series reader, and this series is probably one of my favourites. If you're looking for more mystical shit, then you gotta keep reading the books, because A Game of Thrones and A Clash Of Kings are strictly more medieval oriented. I strongly urge you to keep reading the books, unless you really don't like them lol.
Ummm about that random killing people note, I think that's extremely exaggerated. There are a couple of scenes that main characters die and you possibly wouldn't see it coming, but THAT is what makes the series so memorable. His series is more real than other fantasy series, because ANYONE can die. The hero's don't survive ridiculously impossible escapes through luck, time and time again in this series, because that doesn't happen. This effect also makes you really appreciate who is still alive, maybe how long they will still stay alive. Other notions arise as well, showing how back-stabbing and evil humans can truly be at times.
Strong characters that you like will entice you into a book, and if they die, it can hurt your feelings I guess lol. BUT they are much more important to you. Not some person who you take for granted that gets out of everything. "Valar Morghulis" is a quote you will see a lot in the books if you keep reading. I suggest you find out what it means without googling it or someone spoiling it :)
Lemon if you're hopeful on other fantasy series I'd recommend The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Not quite as good as A Song Of Ice And Fire IMO, but who knows, maybe you'll enjoy that series more. The Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher is a good easy and enticing read. Ummm, The Lies of Locke Lamora is a great book, a sequel just came out, but I didn't find it nearly as good. The Tyrants and Dragons series by John Marco is another favourite fantasy series of mine too.
The thing about these fantasy series is that they AREN"T aimed at the same old crowd as you were mentioning that current fantasy does.
Edit: another good fantasy series is by Tad Williams called Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn.
Back on topic....
Just read Armor for the 4rth time by John Steakley. One of my all time favourites, 10/10.

Perks of Being A Wallflower - 10/10 2nd if not best book I have ever read. reasoning: i can relate to the main character a whole lot.
Yeah he's such a pimp rofl. He gets around more than any other man and he's a friggin dwarf ahahah. There's a great foreshadow of Tyrion in like the first 6 chapters of the first book that I hope comes through. Jon's possibly my favourite character overrall though, or Prince Doran.

One of my favorite Tyrion quotes:
Savage: How would you like to die, little man?
Tyrion: In my bed, when I'm 80, with a belly full of wine and a maiden's mouth around my Cock.
Classic. Hopefully I got the quote right thought...it's been awhile :p

I'm not a Martin fan either. I had someone recommend him to me but I never finished a book of his.
I finished some of these books awhile ago but I don't think I posted in this thread.
Dissolution
9.5/10
A masterpiece. Byers definitely knows how to write the Drow. This book was so good I decided to not read the second book in WotSQ (different author) but instead moved on to the Haunted Lands trilogy.
Unclean
9/10
I'm not actually a huge fan of Thay as a whole for many reasons that would bore a non-D&D fan to go into. However, Byers pulls this off pretty well. The story has some similar things to Dissolution but there are many nuances which make it different enough so that you know you are in another story, and I'm not just talking about the change of setting. Byers pulls off description so well the book becomes like a vivid painting, he is absolutely phenominal and is actually I think a bit better than (prepare for blasphemy) R.A. Salvatore.
His series is more real than other fantasy series, because ANYONE can die.
I found Martin to be a bit boring, if anything.
Before I get people telling me why Martin is good or that I should like him (blah blah blah) please note that I've already formed my opinion and unlike some other things I don't think I will change in regards to an author. Martin's world does not grip me in any particular fashion. I will probably ignore anything that starts with Martin is good because...Why will I ignore it? Because I've already read enough of his books to where I know his style, so you aren't going to be shedding any new light on me. I'll take Forgotten Realms any day, or even Eberron or even Dragonlance over Martin.
and a maiden's mouth around my Cock.
A fine example of Martin's retardation.
The Professor?
06-07-2009, 11:10 AM
A Song of Ice and Fire is what we're talking about...or at least I am. Especially since I never read any of his other stories, and don't particularly care to.
But ASOIAF is just so...hell I don't know how to describe it...but it does have a real feel to it, while still incorporating Fantasy. Shit...I'm even starting to think Dragons were real :p
A Feast for Crows.
11/10
George R. R. Martin, 'nuff said.
P.S. didn't read the posts above me, oddly coincidental. Martin is pretty much one of my favorite authors ever, though the new wild card books are pretty much awful, even if he edited them and wrote like, one chapter.

9/10.
An absolutely fascinating setting. The characters were not great, but the setting and way the entire universe was set up was cool. I like sci-fi. Not much more to my review. Cool.

9/10
Really messed up and creepy and confusing and dark. But really well woven together. A very complete and compelling world for all you sci-fi nuts out there. Throw in a little grotesque violence and this book is the whole deal.
In the process of reading American Gods by him too. It's a similar grotesque style of writing but intsead of extreme violence (though there is some), there's also an extreme lust aspect of the book. Just as interesting, confusing, mind blowing and good so far.

Thank you, I actually genuinely appreciate when people correct my spelling mistakes. Most of the time they are things I do not realize are wrong, and how can I learn unless they are pointed out. I do not understand why people get so hot and bothered about that, as if some how it is an insult on their intelligence.

I was on Vacation for the last week, without internet, so I read a lot. Here it goes.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Frank Miller
9/10 - Very solid story, had a fair amount of depth, not the very very best though.
Foucault's Pendulum - Umberto Eco
8/10 - Again very solid, just nothing that made me go, I NEED TO READ THAT AGAIN.
Hyperion - Dan Simmons
8.5/10 - Very cool science fiction world. I'm still a bit unsure about the ending, but I guess there are more book in the series. (It just ends, without revealing what happens). I'll probably read the next book at some point in time.
The Crystal Shard - R. A. Salvatore
7/10 - Good but generic fantasy. Good characters, I'll probably read the Dark Elf Trilogy also.
Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
9.5/10 - Amazing. Even though I knew roughly what the plot was, I was blown away. I was expecting it to deal solely with censorship, I do not realize it also dealt with the willingness of people to give up books. Really, really made me think.
A Scanner Darkly - Philip K. Dick
8/10 - Good, hammered home his message. I didn't enjoy it as much while I was reading it, but afterwards, I just sort of stared at a wall thinking about it for 30 minutes.
American Gods - Neil Gaimen
9.5/10 - I've always been a fan of his work, and this was excellent. Not only an enjoying story, but a really interesting commentary onto what we value as Americans.
Theres a couple of other books that I'm also partway through.

The locust threat is broken, and the remaining humans turn their attention toward surviving without their last city, Jacinto. Again, Karen Traviss switches seamlessly between past and present, explaining hitherto unknown events, and continuing the story line.

Not a bad book. Pretty short, easy read. It's fairly interesting. It's a little outdated though, and I really couldn't see the main character's point of view at all(but I'm not sure I'm supposed to). Also it kept bothering me that...ehh spoiler the main character finds a way to make himself neither reflect nor absorb light, but he can somehow still see. I don't know if Wells didn't know the biology behind this or what. The little nuances that Wells does think through about being invisible make it a fun read.

The book was decent [I rated it above average (5/10), didn't I?], but it was rather a letdown for what is most likely the last book he would write about Ender. It does fill a good gap, but the few discrepancies, which, despite being explained in the afterword, squeezed a bit more enjoyment out of it. *shrug* It deserved the rating it got, in my eyes. Read this about a couple weeks ago:
Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman 9/10
My least favorite thing I've read by him, which is telling of how much I love him as an author. Was exactly what is was described as, a fairytale for adults. A very good story, just failed to take me the next level, and sit back and say, "Damn". I probably would have ranked it slightly higher, but compared to his other works it just isn't quite as good.
Falling Sideways - Tom Holt 8.25/10
A very funny book, clever at times, fairly ridiculous. In a lot of ways like a bastard child of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, captures some of the same wordplay and cleverness, just no where near to the level. Also does some other things, and I hate doing comparisons to other authors, but that is a fairly easy way to describe him. Its the only thing I've read by him, just picked it up one day because it looked funny.
Preacher: Gone to Texas - Garth Ennis 8.5/10
A comic book, very dark, very cool. About a un-preacherish preacher possessed by a supernatural being. Wouldn't recommend to anyone who doesn't like comic books, but is an excellent dark comic.
Also have read up to book 10 of Sandman, and the series is a 9.75. I love Neil Gaiman, and that is his best work of what I've read so far. Its absolutely amazing, the best series I've ever read. If you like comics, read it. If you do don't like comics, read it. I would recommend to anyone.

spoiler:
Carton's death, and how a climax where the thematic protagonist willing sacrifices himself for a woman belies the book's stress on the importance of individual life. Also, how Carton's doesn't change throughout the book as we'd like to project: while valuing his life more towards the end of the book, it is only enough to realize his sacrifice means something, but not enough to actually regard his existence as anything more than a playing card. He is an apathetic drudge at the beginning of the book, and an apathetic Christ at the end.

I have been keeping up with Codex Alera and have seen the Dresden Files tv show, so I had big expectations for this book.

Its very good, I've read both that one and the next one. Second one was a bit disappointing in that it was pretty much the same formula, but other than that is was good.

Dresden files are amazing books. Short but...fun.
I liked the t.v series too.

Butcher has been somewhat of a departure from my usual reading (forgotten realms). I'm always looking for interesting fantasy and sci-fi. If you have recommendations I'll check them out.
