View Full Version : Good at TAO = Good at Life?

It seems that some of the better TAO players here also are better at real life (graduating college... hot chicks :p)
Does being good at tao make you good at life?

I would bet at least 5% of those people that are "good" are 30+ and live with their parents.
Also, FIRST!
Maybe....
I'm ok at TAO, obviously not the best, as you so love to point out puni. And I have an ok life.
I have never had any major problems that really even let me think, for longer than a second, that my life is bad in any way. Obviously there are the things that are out of my hands, like family/friend's deaths/illness', or friends/family going off in the military. But over all I would say, thus far, I have lead an ok life.... Nothing spectacular, much like my TAO "life."

Like.. Frylock for example
He seems to be good at life. He graduated from that law school thing, and he (apparently) is pretty damn good at TAO, based on the record he has in the tournament. Is it because smart people are good at TAO, and smart people are also good at life.. or is there some other factor :p

Well, you're good at TAO.. so no. :p
But seriously, there is no defining TAO characteristic that is equal to something else in life.

The people that are good at TAO have to be somewhat dedicated and practice enough. You can't be a total dumbass to play the game and beat people. The people that are liked at the forums have good personalities, so that makes them good at life I suppose.
But what does "good at life" really mean anyway?
You might assume that if you just read and listen to what people tell you....But I seriously doubt if people are going to tell you that they are a loser in life (friends, girls, job or w/e). Hell you can't even get the vast majority of the people to be honest in the game by trying to get people to press F5 of type some word that will get you disconnected or boosting stats. Then you have people in the forums that might have multiple accounts trying to be more than one person for whatever stupid reason...
Damn I am in a crappy mood tonight....

the reason good tao people are good at life is dedication, good critical thinking, intelligence, memory skills(like know the damage) and other such things. although being good at TAO doesnt have any correlation to social success. well, maybe a a bit.

Great point....I think all of that has to do with maturity and wisdom...As you get older your priorities do change. Sure who wouldn't want a roll in the sack with some hot young piece of ass or a beautiful red Porche no matter how old you are....(thinks rich billionare and Anna Nicole Smith). It just comes to a point where you look for a partner in life that will be a good mother and not just a good lay...someone who will also is your best friend, and who can actually carry on a conversation.

indeed it does.
This debate can be solved using elementary algebra as follows:
Good at TAO = Good at life
First, we begin by subtracting good from both sides of the equation:
at TAO = at life
In a like manner, we subtract at from both sides of our equation:
TAO = life
With the like terms eliminated from both sides of our equation we come down to a basic statement, TAO is life. I personally disagree with this, I prefer to fill my life with other things in addition to TAO like (graduating college... hot chicks :p)
Hope that added clarity to the discussion.

I think what Punishment was trying to say is that the people who are good at this game tend to be a good deal smarter, and usually more successful as a by-product.
Which is a big, fat lie.
I mean, look at me. I'm brilliant at this game. I'm even an innovator, in the loosest sense of the word.
But I'm broke, live with my parents (edit: in a renovated storage shed to boot), have no car, no job, no girlfriend, very few friends [who haven't moved off-island] and I go to a freakin' community college.
Where I'm getting a Liberal Arts degree.
Yeah, y' want fuckin' FRIES with that?
...
Come to think of it, I rest my case.

Well I have thought about this some more.
What is good at life really mean?
Does a hot chick really mean a good life? What if she spends all your money on plastic surgery, or shopping, or sleeps around on you, or sucks in bed, or has some sexually transmitted disease, etc, etc, etc.
Does having a good job making sheot loads of money mean that you are good at life? What if you boss is a real ass, or you see your company make all the wrong moves and it's failure is imminent, or you hate what you do or hate where you live, etc, etc, etc.
Does having a hot fast car mean that you are good at life? What if that car costs more than you can afford, or the insurance costs eat you alive, or you can barely afford the cost of gas, or you are too worried about getting it damaged that you can't really enjoy it anyway, etc etc etc....
What if being good at life is more about being happy and enjoying life and whatever your life consists of? If that is the case and playing TAO makes you happy then I would have to say that the playing TAO does infact mean being Good at Life...

Yea, but you can go back and read through the post and there are a lot of people that define a good life by the very examples that I used...good job, hot wife, fast car.
Sounds like you want a beautiful woman who doesn't know she is beautiful.

Playing TAO indicates a desire to use your brain, which is a trait associated with intelligence, and since smarter people tend to be more successful in life, it makes sense that the people involved in this conversation* are or will be successful in life. Then, as some of you have stated, the question is how do you judge success. I think that is different for each person, and it also changes as life goes on.
I can only speak for myself, but I measure success by asking "Am I happy with my life?". I have had some crappy things in my life, done some things I am proud of, and some I am deeply ashamed of. But on the whole, I am a happy, easy-going fellow. Playing TAO stimulates my mind, amuses me, and helps me to relax. Being good at TAO makes it more enjoyable, and this, in a small way, makes my life more enjoyable.
I wish the same for all of you: happiness in your lives.
Oh and for those of you who talk about living at home and going to community college, look on the positive side: you are living in a more economical fashion, which will eventually add to your wealth (and consequently happiness) and you are working to improve yourself which is always a good thing. It will also increase your earning power: another good thing. So do not be embarrassed or ashamed of those things. Better days are coming for you.
Peace,
Clacker
(and for those of you who don't know, I am an old fart, 47 this year)
(*If you suck at the game, then you probably will become bored with it, and not play anymore. So, obviously I think we are having a conversation here among people who are good at the game or they wouldn't be here.)

Maybe but there was a thread about school and homework and stuff, where most players were Average D's and C's students, thats not exactly good... But those players may suck at this game so IDK. This game takes strategic thinking and what not, like chess and checkers ;).I'm obviously not the best at this game, but I don't fail at life (referring this to D's and C's).
08-28-2007, 12:05 PM
Actually, thinking about it a bit more, there is probably a more complex relationship between TAO and success. Playing too much would be bad, since you are probably neglecting other things that you could be doing. This effect would be more deleterious if you were, say, playing TAO instead of doing your homework or schoolwork (i.e. if you are playing in computer lab instead of doing research on a topic etc.).

Eh, the more strategic your thinking, the better you probably are at TAO. I'm sure a good chess player, once they understood the basics, could become very good at TAO. But sound strategic thinking and / or "brains" doesn't mean you'll have a good life. There are many very smart people who are not satisfied with their life...and therefore, I suppose, one could argue they aren't "good" at life.
I think an example of this would be Mike Bolton from Office Space. I bet he would be a pretty darn good TAO player, and he is pretty smart (even though he screwed up the money program), but he is certainly not happy with his life.

I don't think being good at TAO even means you are intelligent in the general meaning of the word...there are lots of excellent TAO players who reveal themselves to be of mediocre intellect once you talk to them a bit. Of course, the same is true of Chess...witness crazy Bobby Fischer. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Fischer)

Idk if being good at tao makes you good at life according to the algebretic expression yes it would. (i liked that explination best :) ) But i must agree that you have to be good at stragity games to be able to get tao. As for tao and life iv got a friend who is a genius that kid can figure out just about any thing. The down side is that he is kind of poor. He was really good at tao back when he played. he was a pawner i no it. but any ways yea Good at Tao=Good at life im not so shure. But then again its where you end that would determin "Good at life". all in all if your happy where you are then i say good at life for u man
