CAU Certification Exam

This test is intended to help up-and-coming CAUers become better unit creators. All tests should be PMd to me. No answers should be posted in this thread. This thread is to serve as a discussion of the test. There is no scoring system. I will use a simple scale of Exceptional/Good/Average/Needs Work to grade the exams. All results are private unless you want to be added to the list of Certified CAUers in this thread.

The Exam:

Instructions: All answers should be written in complete sentences and paragraph format. Most of being a good unit creator is good writing skills. Defend your answers, the rest of being a good unit creator is defending your ideas. Grammar and punctuation count. You will receive an automatic Needs Work score if you use leetspeak/aimspeak or any internet abbreviations.

Part 1: Game Mechanics

1. Discuss the tactical advantages a unit with 25 HP and 50% armor has over a unit with 50 HP and no armor.

2. Discuss the design advantages that stem from TAO's process for determining wait time when a unit performs only a single action.

3. Describe one of your own units that introduced a new mechanic/ability/strategy to the game and explain how its ability is balanced against the other units in the game.

Part 2: Individual Style

Reformat the following information giving the unit an interesting name, physical description, history, ability name, and ability description. (This part is perhaps more important than the first. Take your time and be creative.)


Health: 60 | Armor: 0 | Power: * | Blocking: 50% | Movement: 3 | Wait: 1 |
Ability: Hits one adjacent unit. Blockable. (20 Power)
Secondary Ability: (5 Power for each attack)
--Activated by clicking on unit and holding for three
seconds, then choosing a tile to attack. The unit
attacks five times in succesion with his secondary
power(5). All attacks are blocked independately of
each other, and if an attack is initiated on the side of
an opponent than that block % is used for each attack
even if the unit turns to block. All five attacks are
always used, even if any of them are blocked.

You're not getting a History or Description out of me, only bads need them to flesh out a unit, and honestly, it's pretty badly designed in the first place, why give it an ability just to attack? So I fixed it for you.

If you removed them from good units they'd still be good.

Therefor, they aren't necessary.

I guess I'll take the test, but I won't be happy about it. I think I'm certifiable with or without some "test" to prove it.

I LOVE that I was mentioned though! And alongside Mith and Duff no less. I'm honored. If Kyir hadn't edited his post out in shame, I'd even know the context of my mention too. :)

I think I've even used that secondary ability in two of my units, the Berserker and Blitzkrieg (but as primary attacks, and in different manners). This'll be cake.

It's not a matter of winning or losing. I thought it would just be a way to get your creative and tactical muscles a little bit more of a work-out than the normal everyday CAU stuff.

Ha, i have a CAU IQ of 135 (vasty superior) so i do not need such trivialities.

Perhaps if there is a CAU dictionary it will have my face there when you look up supperior cau creator.
