As some of you may know, teen beauty pageants are the pride and prestige of our country, the great United States. The girls that compete in these competitions are not only stunning, poised, well-dressed and styled, but also represent the top intellect of their age. They compete for our hearts and I'm pretty damn sure that Miss South Carolina stole my heart in the Miss Teen USA 2007 contest. When put under pressure in the question and answer part of the competition, she kept her cool and gave the judges this answer...

To contribute, people say stupid shit when they get nervous, and thats probably magnified in this situation because she had prepared answers, and shes not bright enough to shoot from the hip. That being said, she gave a better answer than Bush would have given.

While so many of you are quick to criticize and deride Miss South Carolina from the comfort of your home offices and computer rooms (which, undoubtedly are richly decorated with maps) simply because she may have stumbled a bit through her answer, you fail to grasp the significance of the real-life issue she brings to the forefront:

THERE ARE PEOPLE LIVING IN AMERICA TODAY WHO DO NOT HAVE MAPS!!

Think about that fact the next time you consult one of the relief maps that is oh-so-conveniently within your grasp. Or, the next time you wonder how much rain falls on the state of Idaho in an average year and you consult your precipitation map, consider those who are less fortunate than you and who don't even have access to a precipitation map!

I applaud Miss South Carolina's emphathy and courage in drawing attention to this epidemic. And I applaud gigolojlo gl for shining a light on this problem (which so many are quick to simply shove under the rug) here, in the TAO forums.

I encourage you to support one of the several worthy organizations that has been established to aid the disenfranchised mapless -- for instance, www.hug_a_cartographer.com, or the Society for the Protection of Americans without Maps. I am happy to assist with membership applications to either of these groups -- just PM me with your name and a major credit card number.
