View Full Version : Unit Costs - A New Method

This is a new form of game, as long as people are willing to try something new. I won't claim credit for this, since this was taken from elsewhere. I did, however, tweak the numbers a little bit to fit Rev. So here's the deal.
When creating a formation, you must choose units whose values add up to no more than 100. You can't have any more than 10 units, but you can have less than 10, if you choose. Here are the values of units:
Dragon Tyrant - 21
Dragonspeaker Mage - 13
Knight - 13
Mud Golem - 13
Frost Golem - 11
Scout - 11
Beast Rider - 10
Golem Ambusher - 10
Poison Wisp - 10
Assassin - 9
Dark Magic Witch - 9
Cleric - 8
Pyromancer - 8
Stone Golem - 8
Berserker - 7
Furgon - 7
Lightning Ward - 7
Barrier Ward - 6
Enchantress - 6
An example of a 10-unit setup: Cleric + Stone Golem + 2x Scout + Furgon + Dragon Tyrant + Lightning Ward + Poison Wisp + Mud Golem = 96 points.
An example of a less-than-10-unit setup: Cleric + 3x Knight + Scout + Dragon Tyrant + Mud Golem + Berserker = 99 points.
In conclusion, this new method of playing TAO will encourage more creative thinking. It is good for tournaments and arranged games. The numbers aren't set in stone, and suggestions are welcome.

Hmmm, this would create a very interesting tournament.
Hmm, it would be cool for tournies.
Like having a 70 point tourney or something...

The numbers need to be worked with a little more, but it could work.

One idea that could make things more interesting would be to have each player start with 100 points, then in the second round only like 80 points, and then reduce it until it's like 50 for the finals.
Of course, one problem with it now is that you could do a ten witch bomb, or a 8 witch and 1 dragon.

along with the point system maybe set a unit limit say like no more then 3 of a kinds or something like that

I don't get it
Then you'll just have to learn arithmetic then? And proper posting etiquette while you're at it.

80 points still allows you to have 6 chanties and 4 frosts, for example. Maybe I should put a restriction on how many units of one type like Smilez said?
The problem with mass DMW bombs is that it is highly unreliable. Of course, a new limitation could be added to reduce rushes. For example, frontlined units get 1 extra point.
I think everyone will turt...
I think that won't necessarily be a bad thing.

Certain unit interactions make each unit worth more than it would typically be by itself. For example, the furgon and the frost golem are much stronger together than separate. Now, you could either change the points around so as to make such synergistic combinations cost more, or you could leave it the way it is, therefore forcing players to recognize these cost-effective combos. It depends on the aims of the point system, but this issue should at least be recognized.
Restricting the number of a certain unit type is highly recommended. Players with drops shouldn't have any advantage over everyone else, and this is coming from someone with 10 witches

This is actually a really cool idea; will encourage use of underused units. Someone should make it into a tourney. I think the unit costs are fine.
Edit: Not everyone will turt. :)

If I'm not mistaken, the Judgement clan tourney copied this concept from somebody's idea on Legends. There's no harm bringing an interesting concept like this to FPS, is there?

Perhaps have differing point amounts for multiple of units..
For example the first knight is 13 points, the the second is 17 then the third is 21.
This could also be used for scouts, and allow witch and mage drops to be used as well..
Make a second cleric very expensive, etc.
I have not thought about these numbers a great deal, but it could be a good idea to improve what already looks pretty good.

Yeah.. I'm pretty sure that tournament had point discounts for certain groups of units. Of coarse, it only allowed for about half of theu nits you would be able to use in this variation, but you always could just up the points on Little Joe's tournament.

I would really, really like to see a tournament out of this concept. Someone respectable, put some time into it and make it. Post here if you intend to do so, otherwise you may step on someone else's toes.

This idea sucks and so those the maker
Keep it original
Little Joe FTW
Shoo.
Anyway, we've established that this concept is good. Well then, go ahead and arrange some games using this concept. It will certainly be interesting.
What's the point if you can still only have 10 total, you're limiting it even more instead of having a wider range of games.

Dude, the thing is... the game won't let us have more than 10 units. Tell me how that 12 units set goes, though. :p

"This is a new form of game"
I was assuming it was a suggestion to be added, playing this in the current game form would suck.

Wrap your head around this one: by limiting the form choices - and ONLY the most cliched ones - this concept opens up a whole new field of play.

A tournament out of this would be interesting, and I like Powza's idea. it would encourage less typical sets and more diversified units. I'd definitely sign up for it.

I'd almost certainly TAL approve it, if it was done well.

Only if you play with those in the first place.
I dominate with a 4 BW, Furgon, Scout, Knight, Cleric, and Dragon set.
So yeah, go be better at the game.

I guess I can't win then. :)
It's more of a hit and miss thing.
I just can't see playing with these rules as different for me, more power to the people who want to not have 5 total sets that everyone plays though.
