View Full Version : New Ranking System Idea

OK, I'm sure i'll get abused for this but here goes...
What if TAO was broken up into seasons like such:
Winter = Jan - Mar
Spring = Apr - Jun
Summer = July - Sept
Autumn = Oct - Dec
At the end of every season, the rankings would reset. There would be an OVERALL ranking board in addition to the seasonal rankings. For example, if you placed 1st in the winter season in GL, you would get 10 pts., 2nd would get 8 pts., etc. towards your OVERALL ranking. Tournaments could give points to overall rankings too. Perhaps we could even do something crazy, like give the winner of each season a free gold account for the next season. We could even incorporate our current ranking system into this so the people that have worked hard are not snubbed. For example, Mag has the top spot on the current GL board, so he would start with 50 pts towards his overall ranking in the new system. I feel that a system something like this would encourage a lot more actual playing of games. Also, it would allow players to return to playing after as long hiatus without affecting their overall rating. Perhaps Monkus or Twelve wants to show up and play the next season, no matter how they do, it will not affect their overall ranking, only the season ranking. Just an idea to discuss and perhaps improve upon. What do you guys think?

Well, I think Twelve is busy and won't be on for a while (unless something has changed) and Monkus might, he's been around on the forums lately. But, about the idea, it's decent. But, why not make it like every month or something? It would seem one season is quite a bit of time.

I realize this is similar to TAL, but TAL doesn't reset rankings in the servers. I was trying to come up with a way to increase game activity in the servers. Its quite hard to get a game these days, especially from players with decent stats. With this sort of ranking system, it would force EVERYONE to try to get in lots of games every month. Also, bobo's idea of doing this monthly instead of seasonally probably makes more sense...
~Meph:confused:
Meh no one really REALLY likes the current ranking system, and most people have thier own ideas on how to fix it...
But meh, there isn't much you can do.... I suppose if you want to play high ranked players get high ranked.

Your idea is asking for a lot, really. Sergiy can barely keep up with rankings, now. Do you really think he's going to reset all of the servers, and rankings every two or three months?
I don't.

Brilliant. This way, they don't have to put their boosting into high gear until the last few days of each season. Think about it, what if you just spent the last few days preparing (Making a boosting triangle) then all you have to do is boost during those last few hours.

Well, i know the idea has its flaws...I'm no programmer, but is there a way that you can restrict games vs. single opponents? Like Player A can only play Player B 5 times in a 24 hour period? Something like that would at least slow boosting down. I dunno, maybe this is a stupid idea altogether, but what would alternatives be? I just hear everyone bitching about noone playing games anymore but we don't discuss how to change that. Rev seems like the only place to get a decent game anymore, I'm just saying it shouldn't HAVE to be like that....

I have a better idea, how about we all stick nails in our hails and bang our heads sideway against a table!!!
LOL!!! I AM SO COOL FOR RIPPING ON A NOOB WHO MADE A SUGGESTION!!! I AM LIKE TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!

Seems a little forced....
This would probably fit better in some random CAU thread, because people really go to work on newbs and noobs in there...
Here no one really "ripped" on him.... They just gave an honest opinion.

Tournaments work much better in my opinion, because it forces people to play good opponents and it merges the servers together. Updating the ranking system sounds nice, but there's no real need when the TAL exists.

Yeah, tournaments are a better way of finding out who the current top players are.
Updating the rankings would be nice too, as a number of inactive top accounts would come off pretty quickly.

Meph, stop sucking up to me, you've stated like 5 suckup comments. It wouldn't slow boosting down. You don't boost against a single opponent, you boost against many.

OK, firstly, i am not trying to come up with a system to find out who the 'best players are'. I am simply trying to come up with a system that would encourage people to actually play the game more. Its very frustrating when you sit in the lobby for an hour offering an open challenge and noone will ever play you. It is generally because either a) 'Your stats are too low, not worth my time', or b) 'Your stats are too high, theres no way i can beat you!'. So obviously the rating system is either giving people a false sense of superiority or inferiority.
Secondly, maybe a new rating system isn't even the answer, it was just a stupid idea i had. There are obviously enough people complaining how each different server sucks because noone plays. I just happened to offer a possible solution to try to get people to play more, I'm sorry if it was a stupid idea but I haven't heard alot of people offering suggestions, only bitching.
Lastly, The Coder, I am not trying to suck up to you. I mentioned twice that I liked your avatar. Once in a thread that noone posts in anymore so i thought it may have been a wasted post by me, and a second time here. If that amounts to sucking up, then I guess I am guilty...
So to sum up, I guess the lesson learned here is twofold:
1) Don't EVER post an idea you may have, especially if you are a noob, it will only lead to people telling you how stupid you are.
2) Don't ever compliment someone, because instead of possibly finding common interests with other people it will just prove that you are a suckup and, once again, how stupid you are.
Points taken.....

One ranking system is enough.
It isn't the world of pro running, where people are judged on their speed in several categories. We don't need to integrate it that deeply; tournaments will show us who is at the top, ranks will show us who has been.

Heh heh.
Anyway, back to the topic, I really like your idea Linus. It would definitely spawn a lot more activity on the servers, at least as far as gold games go. Also, more greys would get ranked. However, on the downside, Bills might lose a bit of money since about 150-200 people will stop paying for their golds. :p
