I made a post earlier about 10 tips to become a better musician...Well you got one right here :). I live, eat, sleep and breathe the trumpet. I don't recommend posting a pic up here because you will get flamed on your appearance much so. Musicians rule! If your not a musician **** off please ;)

Nah just kidding.

In all seriousness, I do metal vocals. I currently do backup vocals for a local band called Noxx. I don't have any good pics.

ben is a trumpet player w00t. I'm no good... last chair in wind ensemble (well 5th chair actually, but I let last chair sit ahead of me 'cause its easier to slip in on the end.) At least I'm in the "good" band.

I'm not musically talented whatsoever, but I do sing in a band called The Workout. I'm actually going to be in the studio the next two days, hopefully finishing out first professional quality EP. Should be out in early February, at which time I'll probably make a thread telling everyone to check out/add our myspace and let me know what you think. All that scene shit. Until then.

Tama Drummer
01-20-2008, 10:55 PM
i have a piano. well, I took it from my sister. she doesn't use it anymore. I used to play when I was like 8, but I stopped after a few months. Trying to get back into it now, but I'm too impatient. I have awesome ideas, and I just want to be able to play them. cept I can't play them, cause I suck at piano. So if you have tips on how to practice, ect, let me know. I really don't like playing other peoples music (I almost never drum along to CDs unless they're drumless tracks), but I think that's probably the best way.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b183/tamadrumer/new/14.jpg
We have another actual piano (I guess that's a "keyboard") in the house too. My mom uses that. She plays organ for a church.

Both > Either.

Total GH nerd here, own every game on every system because I have absolutely no self-control. Have Rock Band too, but the guitar sucks ass. Strum bar broke on Day 2.

That in mind, I seriously have to ask... Why all the hate from Guitar Hero/Rock Band from you "real" musicians? Why are the two mutually exclusive to you lot? Can't you play real instruments as a serious hobby and then fall back on a plastar when you just feel like having fun? Or better yet... Just play both real and fake instruments for fun?

Anyway.

I've been playing keyboard/piano on and off for ten years now, and I'm actually a keyboardist for the jam band known as Zorganico. I also compose band works, which includes both my own creations and original covers of classic/classic rock music (for instance, the piece I'm currently working on is a progressive metal version of Beethoven's classic, Fur Elise) and includes three instruments (keyboard, guitar, lead and/or rhythm, and bass--I don't put a lot of effort into writing music for drums, partially because I like playing with a drummer that can improve, but mostly because I'm lazy) and vocals.

These pieces were ORIGINALLY going to go towards my own metal band, named Illuminatus after our title song, but that one split up over winter break. :( Now I figure I'll just keep composing and I'll work something out, either sell 'em to local artists or find a new band to play 'em with.

No pictures of my practice keyboards as they're over at our bassist's place (we practice at her house) and I can't remember the model types, but one's a Casio 5-octave portable keyboard and the other's a Casio 4-octave portable piece of crap. The former I got myself this last Christmas and the latter my parents got me for Christmas ten years ago, and putting the two together side-by-side, you get an appreciation for how far the electronic keyboard has come in ten years' time.

Anyway, the keyboard I use to practice at home is a Yamaha DGX-500 Portable Grand and looks something like this:

http://achamilton.co.uk/Pictures/DGX500.jpg

I could rattle off the specs for it like a receipt maker, but honestly all you need to know is it's wicked fun to play and wicked hard to move. If you need one for "on-the-go" purposes, this one's not for you. Otherwise... :)

I also have two guitars, one's a Fender full-body acoustic I found on the road one day, and the other's a Johnson half-body acoustic-electric I was given as a hand-me-down. I don't play the Johnson much as I'm too lazy to re-string it, which is a shame because it fits my body type better. I'm teaching myself to play tremolo slide guitar, it's an uphill battle because most of my music-related time is spent either behind the keyboard or on the computer, composing. I'd love to learn 8-finger tapping as strumming really just isn't my forte and I have long fingers, but it's inaudible on an acoustic guitar.

ben66

Trumpet by far is the most beautiful instrument to play. Find a professional whose playing a beautiful song on the trumpet and you can't help but just watch and be amazed. Find someone playing guitar hero and you just laugh and say "cool" and keep walking.

When you've mastered the trumpet, you've mastered something great. The tones and the ability to glide up in that upper register is the envy of all musicians in training. If you listen to a kid whose played trumpet say...2 years? Then a musician you see the huge difference. The trumpet is something that takes years of nurturing, training your lips and building your muscle, building a good ear and most of all CONTROL. I could write a book about the trumpet if I need be. I've been playing 7 years and it's the greatest instrument mankind has to offer. Guitar hero on the other hand...what maybe a week and I'm on "expert mode"? And drum players no offense...but I've heard some sick drum solos and really they all just sound the same old. People ain't never gonna get tired of hearing a trumpet.

Go watch ESPN or listen to commercials. Take notice of how a trumpet is sounding in every song, take that trumpet away and the song becomes absolutely nothing.

Sorry it's a little late, but I just want to comment. I noticed that your hi-hats were on the right. Do you usually play with that? I prefer them on the left, it's easier for me to play as a dominant right-hander. I like the kit, btw. And the action photo. :)

I play piano, and I have been for 8 years along with a little drumming.

Tama Drummer
03-20-2008, 07:55 PM
I have to sets of hi-hats. One is on the right, the other is on the left. I basically can play to different sounding kits without moving. I have to snares, two different bass drums, and two different hi-hat/hi-hat pedals. All I need to do is switch my right foot to hi-hats, left foot to bass drum, and switch snares and it'll sound like a completely different kit.

Mmmm ambidextrousity. :D

But the hi-hat on the left is the one I use most. The one on the right is more for accents, foot patterns, or the whole "two kit" thing.

I have 2 acoustic guitars. The 6-string is an Angelica and used to be my dads (meaning it's rather old, but oh my GOD does it sound/look great) and my 12-string...well...I've never tried to play so I can't remember off the top of my head what type it is. :) I also have a keyboard and I've been trying to teach myself both the guitar and piano for a while now.

I'm having much more success with the piano. <3 Give me a Beatles song and I can proudly play it.

I played the trumpet for 3 years, and I'm not sure if I can still play because I didn't like it. But I still have it! Also, I've been taking music classes since I was 4 and been in my old school's Chamber Choir, musicals, and I know more about music than you'd think. ;)

Oh, and Guitar Hero = fun. So stfu.

I've always wanted to play the drums, and I've played some at my friend's house...but it's not the same without your own set.

03-22-2008, 10:32 AM
Never could play the drums...You have to be on a different level, so to speak, to do that. I think they have one of the toughest instruments to play IMO. Got mad respect for Def Leppards drummer who came back from loosing an arm and was still able to play for the band....Amazing accomplishment right there!

Naw, it's all about learning to use the most efficient muscles, when it comes to stamina. There are different joints. Using the smallest joints (fingers and wrists) uses up the least energy, as opposed to playing with your whole arm (shoulder and elbow).

My bass and I are in a nice relationship...But I'd love a good bass. I play my ol' Squire P-bass, and have an Ibanez that pretty much died on me.

No practice or anything, just something I was born with. I would think it would be crazy hard to learn.

I actually spent 2 years with a vocal teacher trying to learn screamo vocals, couldn't do it. Best I could do was Slipknot, which isn't really screamo.

But the Slipknot voice is really cool sounding. I know a few people who can do it pretty well.

Slipknot's drummer is a legend, he was great live in the huge ball doing the drum solo.

Nice new sig btw mino. And I love the drummer's ball...it's soo cool. I really like his double bass solos, and then how he adds a new drum each layer of the solo. I think it sounds great.

"Come back at lunch break to do your lesson". I said ok then . I went back at lunch & explained to her not to ROAR at children. She then told me that she was sorry.. and all of that trying to keep me doing my music lessons so she can get more (Dosh (money$$$). I then told her after all of her perswading that i quit. lol. LMAO this is a musicians thread and you're taking voice lessons for screamo? wtf?!?!?! can anyone tell me the 3 notes in a Gsus? or can they just tell me that the top tuning note on a guitar is e and that if you put your hand on 2 and 4 you play power chord and crazy metal!!!!! thats not fucking music.
In response to your drummers music :
I taught myself drums. I quickly realized that jazz drumming is by far the hardest drumming ever. any actual drummer will tell you that. and you can actually hear the bass guitar in jazz music. it isn't just playing the same line as rhythm guitar

No. Sure, jazz can be hard. But I hate this stupid snobby statement you and lots of other "jazz" drummers say. Any genre is as hard as you make it, or as easy as you make it. And no, I'm not just some metal drummer who knows nothing about jazz. I started drum set playing jazz with the school jazz band. I'm quite capable of playing many of genres (latin is definitely my weakness).

Screaming itself isn't music. Drumming itself isn't really music either. But this isn't the "music" thread. It's the "musician" thread. Just because you don't like one person's instrument or how they use it, doesn't mean it doesn't belong here.

Tama:
i was just nearly saying that the majority of rock drumming is easy. Sure you can make really hard rock thats harder than some jazz. The thing with rock. dynamics truly aren't that common. just certain aspects in jazz drumming aren't there in rock. Most rock drumming includes mainly playing time and fills. Jazz usually uses way more dynamics, way more setups, and way more variety within a song. and ballads? come on dude. you were in a jazz band. you should know that ballads are bitches especially on drums. And latin is just like crazy. haha. traditional latin has you like with 4 different rhythms with each appendage and ugh. its tough. but one thing rock does have within songs is more tempo changes. People find rock to just be more laid back drumming. i never said what type of music was more fun. thats your own opinion.
In response to it being the musician thread. i just dont feel that some 10th grade who can't read sheet music but memorizes tab and remembers how to play a few classics on piano qualifies as actual musicianship. know what i mean? maybe? well thats all im saying

Tama Drummer

Honestly, I do agree with most of the things your saying. Especially the dynamics. Most drummers don't seem to even know what that is. And yea, playing perfectly solid SLOOOOOOOOOW is harder than playing as fast as you can.

But at the same time, I do enjoy metal and a lot of the musicians that perform the music I enjoy aren't the most proficient. But the fact is, they make music I enjoy and so I've always tried to give respect to anyone who wants to hold an instrument. Just because not everyone can read music, and many rock drummers couldn't last 30 seconds in a jazz gig, I'm not going to look at them any different.

And like I mentioned, it's just mostly the snobby attitude of a lot of "real" musicians (as they call themselves) that just bugs me. I'm not trying to bash you or anything, it's just a pet peeve I guess. Like I said, I actually agree with pretty much everything your saying.

On another note, I really should get more into latin. I actually do like to do a lot of limb independence crap, so it should be a bit up my alley. I just haven't had much experience with it, cause I don't really live in a "latin" area, if that makes sense.

Well, I'm a drummer, mostly metal, but I love rock as well. never really tried any other genres other than that, but I'd love to experiment.

Here's a pic of my kit, don't mind the dust on the cymbals, basement was a bit dusty at the time. I also took the wraps off the toms and soon the kick and plan on getting a nice natural finish on the shells. :D

I think you'd be surprised how much one can rip with a 4 piece.

You really don't need a whole lotta drums to have a decent kit, it's how you use the ones you have. I'm quick enough with my hands to throw in some pretty sick fills that I don't need a huge ass 6 or 7 piece kit. It's also a pain in the ass to haul around a lot of drums.

I solved the kick problem by buying some Cobras, i'm quite content with those. :D

Anyway, whenever I get the money, If I ever do, I'll probably buy some Meinl cymbals, I love the sound they have.
