Cyber Bullying: what do you think?

What was once a minor issue has been magnified under the nation's microscope and has become a problem that our law enforcement in America is struggling to cope with. The "harrassment, name-calling and general put-down" of another person has been widely seen through all of the internet. It is pretty likely that we've either witnessed it, partaken in it or been the victim of such behavior. What do we do? Well one thing is certain that few kids are willing to go to their local law-enforcement official because they got in an AIM war with a few friends, and it's even more unlikely that someone will report harrassment by someone that they have never met face to face, which makes combating this problem even more difficult.

The stories of cyber bullying that have been significant contributors to suicides amongst distraught teens have forced our law-enforcement into some action. Penalties for being caught cyber-bullying can go up to 3 years in jail and up to $2000 in fines. The question I pose is: why? The answer is simple. It's because we've invented special technology that makes it impossible for our children to press the off button on their com...wait. We haven't have we? Could these people who are being bullied online simply log off? Turn the computer off? Go to another website? Surely with such features such as being able to block a certain user it shouldn't be too much of a bother should it? The problem is human nature. Human nature doesn't allow us to "walk away" easily, so being harassed online especially by someone you know especially can be hard to walk away from. Many of us with any kind of backbone will obviously retaliate. But with retaliation who becomes the victim? Who knows, you tell me. Please tell me your views on this situation.

Tama thank you for giving me the opportunity to say this here before I was going to PM you. I generally dislike you as well as your posts and threads in general and some of the treatment you dish out to other people in this server. Don't like it, get off this thread. One thing I won't appreciate is blatant rudeness. My thread doesn't stem out any hatred towards any one person and shouldn't instigate arguments. If an argument is what your looking for go join your school's Forensics team.

I think so too. 3 years and 2000 dollars in fines is severe. But suicides have been attributed to it, so you could make the argument that your "saving lives".

You have done a good job in paraphrasing a website you found, but it simply isn't doing too much good here. You shouldn't be sending people to some third party company that can't do anything (especially some random site that asks for personal contact information from kids). You should be sending them to mods, or established users who are willing to listen and offer some advice. The documentation is good, but I think your intentions are more in hitting the "New Thread" button.
