View Full Version : The youtube generation?

Well since no one has posted this yet id figure i would and discuss this a bit.
If you guys haven't heard yet, two weeks ago a group of teens invited a girl over to their house telling her they wanted to talk to her. Once in the door, the girl was attacked and beaten while being video taped and the video was posted on youtube. (Read (http://www.thestar.com/News/World/article/411365))
When asked why they did the act, they said they wanted to have a famous video.
The video is a bit disgusting:
(Video (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1665137849081436804&q=teens+beat+up+girl+video&total=342&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1&hl=en))
So guys, whats wrong this these teens? Is this what this generation has to offer? Or is this just some messed up teens who need some major help?
That's messed up. Them kids need serious help. But yeah, our currect generation is pretty damn messed up, theres alot of videos simular to that all over youtube. Todays kids aren't alright.

What is this? A fight.
It's retarded that this got so much publicity.
EDIT: okay, yeah its bad. But this happens all the time...people get jumped. Just because someone video taped it and put on youtube its horrible. I bet you can find 50 videos of one person getting beat up by many on youtube.

This isnt the first time kids have been busted for video taping their crimes. The only difference is the ability for the kids to take their stupidity to the next level and post it for the world to see. The media blew the story up because the demographic involved (CHEERLEADERS) isn't known for gang beatings.

Yes, because with this thread on tacticsarena.com they have achieved their ultimate goal of having people discuss how stupid they are on the internet. We should unplug the intarweb while there is still time before there are copy cat beatings with hopes of similar TAO fame.

Ah, I love it when folks take it out of context intentionally as an attempt to provoke stupid arguments.
Obvious troll is obvious.
How was that taken out of context? He quoted your entire post... Endless isn't the one that gave them the publicity they were looking for, it was the news that brought it up on their shows.
And something tells me this isn't the kind of publicity they were looking for, everyone is basically just saying they are fucked up girls who need therapy. But I'm pretty sure when they made the video they were expecting everyone to say something along the lines of, "hell yeah, that bitch had it coming, you go girl(s)."
Either way, thats just disgusting to me... I can't stand to see someone get hit while they are down, or when they aren't fighting back. That kinda stuff makes me sick to my stomach.

This isn't the first act that has been posted on YouTube. The Police have been monitoring YouTube and have caught criminals because they videotaped their crimes and posted them on YouTube.
When you look back across Time, there has always been a need for the "15 Minutes of Fame". Why do you think people do stupid stuff? We want to be famous, even if it is for something pathetic and pointless.
People who have posted stupid stuff on YouTube have appeared on Late Night Talk Shows, or even CNN because they became an internet sensation. The fact that we keep giving publicity to people who post things on YouTube outside the internet will keep people coming back for more. Finding new ways to get people to view their videos and finding new ways to get their "15 Minutes of Fame".
The concept of the "15 Minutes of Fame" hasn't changed, just the way it is viewed, has changed.
The girls posting their video on YouTube, was a moronic move on their part. But in another sense, we still all viewed it, Forum Topics are made about it, and more people view it. We are making them famous, for something they did, that is wrong.
I jumped around a lot here, but my point is that the "YouTube Generation" is here, as stated already. But the "15 Minutes of Fame" is not new.

Sarcastic as he may be ( and I love sarcasm :)) Worker has a point.
Endless posted this in an attempt to start a conversation and spark social insights, not to perpetuate something negative or give the girls responsible for this crime what they want.
And why focus on what they want or don't want? The important thing is the crime that was committed, and bringing awareness to that crime.
I think it's an important issue, important enough to warrant a thread on these forums.
Maybe not as important as discussing whether or not Dumbledore is gay, but certainly just as relevant.

Not to say what these girls did was ok.. but whatever happened to a good old fight? When did it become alright to do whatever you want to someone but the moment a fist is raised someone has to call the cops?
From what I understand the girl who got beat up was messing with one of the other girls man.. I've cracked a chick upside the head with a frying pan for that very same thing. No one was arrested.. it was just a fight.
The two girls should have boxed it out instead of eight on one.

Psychopath = the inability to tell right from wrong, or lack of conscience...

Apparently today's youth got self righteous, and realized that fighting and violence isn't the answer, and problems don't need to be solved with fists.
But who am I to make this claim? I just got in a fight a few weeks ago... Lost, and can't wait for round two...

you know pretending to be apathetic to everything doesn't make you look cool.
That said, I don't think the point of all this publicity was that there was a fight, it's was that posting the beating on youtube was one of the reasons for the fight. The whole "messing with the man" thing seemed to be a personal grudge and an excuse, but they beat up the other girl and made a video because they wanted to "get famous". Which would be something that merits attention.

Lack of conscience = sociopath and they know right and wrong, they just dont care.

I think you have a good point here. Everyone is saying that this doesn't deserve the publicity it is getting, and maybe it doesn't. But this situation is in fact different than kids getting jumped every day. This was preconceived, with the intention of posting it on the internet. Which isn't quite as common as some kid getting jumped because hes got nice shoes in a bad neighborhood.
Lack of conscience = sociopath and they know right and wrong, they just dont care.
sociopath = extremely antisocial, and yes they know the difference between right and wrong.
But psychopath on the other hand literally means they have no conscience what-so-ever. Not all psychopaths are violent or aggressive, and many fake a conscience and emotions just so know one notices them. But when you hear about a serial killer having absolutely no remorse or guilt for the crimes s/he committed, then you are usually hearing about a psychopath.

The entire attack was planned and filmed with the express purpose of posting it on YouTube.
A total of 8 people, including two guys who waited outside to act as lookouts, particpated in the attack. The girl they attacked, until that moment, had been one of their friends. For whatever reason, she was chosen as the subject of what they hoped would be a hit (no pun intended) on YouTube.
Interesting side item. Each person involved were being held on $30,000 bail. 7 of them will probably be charged as adults in the attack. However, Dr Phil had one of his staffers bail one of the girls out of jail.
Basically, for exclusive rights to her version of the story, Dr Phill dropped the cash to get her out of there.
What the video parts you have seen doesn;t show is the planning before she arrived, as well as the initial attack which knocked the girl out. It was after she woke up that the other girls got involved, and took turns beating on her.
It will be interesting to watch the defense happen in this case. I would bet money that at least a couple of the defense lawyers try and blame the attack on the environment that YouTube and other online video sites have created, where things like this can bring instant fame.
Much as Video Game Violence has been preached by some, I think Online Video Fame will soon be used as defenses in such trials.

to be honest, this generation is going to have a high crime rate... which apparently already is happening. the reason for this is because parents aren't able to discipline their children properly and/or the parents won't discipline them period. it's because of these laws that they have out saying you cannot hit your children, for if you do you will go to jail. i believe that law to be nothing but bull shit. in order to keep order, you must have discipline and that these days is no longer. because discipline is so called "abuse". which really, it's not if you know how to discipline them correctly. now, i myself have been abused, was on the verge of dieing.
anywho, to this video, i believe that the girl did the right thing in not fighting back because it shows that she is better than the other girls that where beating her up. but, if i was in the position, i would of jacked her in her jaw and just continued to beat on her and walk out. i mean, you know the other girls watching wouldn't have done shit once that fat girl in the pink sweat pants got her ass whooped royally.....

Just like the population, in addition to the fact there is a growth in trust of the goverment, which means more people are willing to term to the cops for crimes. Justice Department takes that into account for their statistics, going for a per-capita basis.

We're a bunch of stuck up brats who were given everything we wanted, we got an award for freaking participation. This is not a Youtube problem, this is a parenting issue. Population of the US went up 25% during that time period. Violent offenders in prison went up 300%. Violent crime rate went down about 55%
So, even accounting for population growth, there was less crime but more people in prison.

One's a rare catastrophe, the other is a pretty normal occurrence. I never said it was okay, just like bullying in general really isnt, but I dont think it deserves so much attention.
Comparing hundreds losing their homes or dying to stupid, hormonal, attention-starved teenagers isnt a very fair comparison.
If it does require so much attention, what are you going to do? Shut down youtube? Because kids are being hurt? Well shoot, CRX, you can do that with any innovation. Should we ban cars because they could be used to hurt people? Trust me, kids will find reason to beat each other without youtube just fine.
The thing sicker than kids wanting attention is that people have desire to watch this bullcrap. But thats a pretty widespread psychological desire that I would argue has been around for a lot longer than youtube.

Big difference. Using a car accomplishes transportation as it's primary objective. In a broad sense, Youtube is tool to distribute ideas. Misuse of Youtube, such as defaming an individual and posting a video of their beating is analogous to misusing a car. Our hope as citizens is that those who drive poorly will be reprimanded before injuring someone. Similarly, I'd like to see those who posted the video reprimanded to prevent victims of similar abuses.

Publicity is going to make it MORE common, not the other way around. I would be irked if my kid was being bullied in general. Youtube doesnt have much to do with that.

They didnt use youtube improperly. They posted a video that got replies. That's exactly what youtube is for. It's not really analogous. Something analogous would be posting porn (clearly illustrated as misuse of youtube), and then being reprimanded for it. People are up in arms over posting such a "hideous event" on youtube. The event is hideous, along with its motives, not the posting of it.
The decent opposing argument is that the "hideous event" was motivated by youtube. But that derives from a desire of fame within the teens, not anything youtube did.

I was more referring to the fact that the human race has enjoyed watching things die ever since it began. The movie was not made by the girls to make people contemplate its ethical values. It was made so people would watch it. And they did. The moral questioning came later.

There is no statistical proof of that. In addition, there may be a surge of these videos now, but in the long run, abuses of this type will hopefully subside due to increased awareness. If the videos ran along an underground circuit, similar to that of Kimbo Slice, it would be far more dangerous because only teens would see this.

youtube's guidelines
Graphic or gratuitous violence is not allowed. If your video shows someone getting hurt, attacked, or humiliated, don't post it.

There are other arguments. This is defamation, regardless of the medium. It was posted to humiliate a girl and was taken under duress. That fits into the legal definition of defamation.

They wrongly made and posted it to defame and embarrass the victim. People watched initially because they knew the girl or were sent the link. Upon realizing how horrible it was, the link reached the news and the majority of viewers watched it for the reasons I ascribed.

No, they actually made it to be popular and known on youtube. People have even been making "catfight" or just "fight club" videos for years. Just to get seen. This isnt new.
If you ask me, the only reasonable thing to do isnt to question the motives as to why they're posting things to get famous or whether it's the "youtube generation" or not, it's to just take the video as proof of battery and charge them with assault as adults. Stop concentrating on the psychology of everything, just look at the actions (which would be wrong in any regard) and react accordingly. In that regard, we're saying the same thing. But multiple people here have been looking at the medium used, which I find of very little importance.

Uhh..what I see is one girl getting messed up by another girl, around other people who don't like her.
What is this? A fight.
It's retarded that this got so much publicity.
EDIT: okay, yeah its bad. But this happens all the time...people get jumped. Just because someone video taped it and put on youtube its horrible. I bet you can find 50 videos of one person getting beat up by many on youtube.
Just because it happens all the time, doesn't mean you should take this event any less seriously or disregard the crimes committed.
The tape you saw was only three minutes long, of a thirty minute video. It gets much, much worse--so much so, that this young woman has lost the hearing from her left ear, and the sight of her left eye. I simply want to make a point: don't be so callous towards others.
It's fun to joke about subjects, but even with my demented sense of humor, I can still find a time to be serious and a time to kid around.

But multiple people here have been looking at the medium used, which I find of very little importance.
truce?

Soon, a bunch of pot heads and criminals are going to be running everything.
Yay.
I'm confused. The Democrats aren't criminals and the Republicans aren't potheads.
Unless...
We're finally going to see some bipartisan cooperation in D.C.?!

I wasn't joking. This girl got beat up for talking shit, she deserves it. You wanna see worse? Go to the "projects" People get stabbed for just walking wrong. Yeah this shit is bad, but its not worse than what else is going on in the world. The simple fact, I don't remember who said it, but the simple fact that they're the "Cheerleader" type is the reason why this video is getting so much publicity. It's ridiculous.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I've seen worse videos in the last few years. One of my friends kind of did the same thing. I was involved, but I never knew we were going to be videotaped (by a shitty ass camera phone). We were in this group fight 4 against 4. Anyway, we were kicking ass and it came to a point when we were supposed to stop. One of my friends broke one guy's shoulder and my other friend kept beating the other guy's face until he was bleeding heavily and could have been seriously injured. I was the first to get out of the fight, since it was "over", but my dumbass friends wanted to hurt them more for starting shit with us, so me and the other guys that were watching them had to stop them. The video was posted somewhere on the internet; I forgot where...it was 2 years ago. It probably doesn't exist anymore.
Anyway, apparently catching violent things on video has gotten popular in this generation. I guess the teens ran out of creative things to videotape, and decided to do new things such as beating up and torturing people. What did we do wrong to let this kind of thing happen? I know! Let's blame it on violent video games and movies! But, in all seriousness, something should be done about this kind of thing.
EDIT:
So losing a fight qualifies you as a tough guy now?
Ha, hells no, but brave, yes. Win or not, still not a pussy as long you don't chicken out. :p

One's a rare catastrophe, the other is a pretty normal occurrence. I never said it was okay, just like bullying in general really isnt, but I dont think it deserves so much attention.
The frequency of the event that the fact that it affects more of us should mean it merits more attention, no?
Comparing hundreds losing their homes or dying to stupid, hormonal, attention-starved teenagers isnt a very fair comparison.
So because thousand of people lost their homes to Katrina, a girl losing half her hearing and vision because some teens wanted attention is no longer a serious concern?
If you're point is that there are far more pressing concerns that the media should be focusing on, I agree, but this is still more important "news" than an art student making a card portrait of jimmy hendrix.
If it does require so much attention, what are you going to do? Shut down youtube? Because kids are being hurt? Well shoot, CRX, you can do that with any innovation. Should we ban cars because they could be used to hurt people? Trust me, kids will find reason to beat each other without youtube just fine.
Kids will find a reason, but just because you can't stop all of it doesn't mean you shouldn't try to stop some of the causes. People will die in car accidents no matter what, so why illegalize drunk driving? because it will help reduce the number of deaths. Kids will beat up on each other no matter what, but if youtube is increasing the number of these incidents, a way to reduce this would at least be considered.
The thing sicker than kids wanting attention is that people have desire to watch this bullcrap. But thats a pretty widespread psychological desire that I would argue has been around for a lot longer than youtube.
So youtube provides a way to connect the desire for attention with the desire to watch this shit. It's not the source of the problem, but it's a new type of fuel for the fire, it deserves attention, no?
If you ask me, the only reasonable thing to do isnt to question the motives as to why they're posting things to get famous or whether it's the "youtube generation" or not, it's to just take the video as proof of battery and charge them with assault as adults. Stop concentrating on the psychology of everything, just look at the actions (which would be wrong in any regard) and react accordingly. In that regard, we're saying the same thing. But multiple people here have been looking at the medium used, which I find of very little importance.
Reacting after serious injury doesn't help potential victims. If looking at the medium and motives will reduce the number of future incidents, then why isn't it reasonable to look at them?

The simple fact, I don't remember who said it, but the simple fact that they're the "Cheerleader" type is the reason why this video is getting so much publicity. It's ridiculous.
I never claimed you were joking, I was simply stating that there was a time and place TO joke about this subject, in case anyone was interested in ripping on this case.
"Talking shit" does not mean you deserve to be assaulted. I do agree that she did well to escalate the situation, and therefore, I don't negate the blame placed on her. However, as previously stated, that gives NO cause for something like this to have happened. It only furthers to show the immaturity people have: what's wrong, you can't deflect someones gossip? You have a need to feel strong? To fight?
All you prove is your ignorance and ability to lose control over something so minimal as words. If your original purpose was to fight, and prove your dominance, you've already forfeited whatever you had planned. Relating to your statement about the projects--does this not connect exactly with what you've said? Doesn't it seem ignorant to stab someone for speaking? Do you believe they're in the right mindset, that it's completely justified, to hurt or kill someone over an exchange of words?
I believe your argument is stemming from the fact that, you don't believe this should be newsworthy. You believe the media has blown this event out of proportion, and given fame to these ignorant people.
If that is the case, I agree. There are far more pressing matters that should be perceived in the media, and yet, they aren't. Quite frankly, it's largely a reason as to why I dislike the media.
To restate, however, my main point pertained to discarding such a callous behavior towards people. "She deserved it!" or "She had it coming!" are simply an outsiders view, in the first place. There are two sides to every coin, and you don't know the whole story. Secondly, neither of those statements contribute to the issue at hand--they simply serve to escalate negative emotions.
