I just bought a new Dell computer, I got the keyboard, mouse, everything.

Now, I turn on the computer and it comes up to a screen with the Dell logo, dell.com
And it says

F2 = Setup
F12 = Boot Menu

Now, when I hit F12 or F2 neither of them work..It stays on the same screen. Wtf am I doing wrong?

You shouldn't have to hit either of them...

Does the PC make any beeps, or is there speech coming out of the speakers, assuming you have speakers plugged in?

The speakers aren't plugged in, but they're there.

Should have gotten an HP. The Dell has sucked ever since they got rid of the "Dell guy."

They don't really suck..It doesn't matter..As soon as it gets running, i'm taking pretty much everything out and replacing it. I like to rebuild the computers, I don't know so much about the programming and stuff on the computer. :\

Plug the speakers in, just to make sure the BIOS isn't sending an error code out through there.

I know what you should do...

Listen to Xer. And listen to Jeff and dirka when they get here (shouldn't be too long). They are computer geniuses. They fixed my internet, in turn finding a cure for cancer.

No, it isn't. It's still doing one beep even with the speakers plugged in.

It says "BIOS Revision 1.0.10" on the main dell screen..Does that matter?

And mantis: Yes, I was waiting for Jeff or Xerent to get in here. Worker helped me too, though.

It's a weird spot for a computer to hang on. Usually if there wasn't a recognizable OS, the computer would prompt for a system disk, or complain that it couldn't find any bootable sources to work off of.

The fact that you aren't getting past the BIOS splash screen almost suggests you're passing POST... but either have a misconfigured BIOS... or you're not really passing POST.

It -might- be a loose connection, or a mis-configured bios, but the fact that you aren't even given a windows loading screen, a boot option, or anything past a BIOS splash screen suggests a low level problem, and probably not much to do with the OS.

Soo..what should I do? Call dell or just send it back?

It's an Inspiron 530

There's an update for your BIOS which -might- fix the issue, it can be downloaded here.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R181000&SystemID=INSP_DSKTP_D530&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=14390&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=5&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=246767

But, the paradox of the situation is that you can't install it without first either booting into windows, or creating a DOS bootable disk or USB key, which I don't think you would be able to get into anyways because you can't get past this problem.

You can try making sure your RAM, CPU and HDD are seated properly, but you shouldn't do this if you don't feel comfortable with it.

In general, unless I'm missing something obvious, it might be best to exchange for another PC.

This just occurred to me. Does your keyboard plug into a USB port?

Yes it does.
What do you mean by seated properly? Connected? I haven't looked at that yet. Ooooh, I think I know what might be wrong..

Does your caps lock light go on and off when you toggle caps? If not, try plugging your keyboard into a different USB port and rebooting. Sometimes some ports don't get activated until later in the boot sequence, strange as it may sound.

I did it..I had a freakin' stick of ram in there..I did it the day I got it, and completely forgot...I took it out, and it started right up. heh.

I swear, my first thought when reading the first post was "maybe the keyboard is just not plugged in correctly", but then I thought, "nah, even a moron like Wizzy would check the keyboard when nothing happens while pressing the keys on a new computer" ...
The sad thing is though, that I'm sure it didn't even cross your mind to say sorry for stealing at least 30 minutes of xerent's life ...

What're you retarded? Xerent helped me with things that might have been wrong, I found out what was wrong. And thanks to xerent, now if anything like that happens again I can atleast know what is going on.

So stfu, please.

Why didn't you just build your own then?

You could have gotten a kick ass computer, picked your case, your mother bd, your CPU, the graphics card, ram....etc etc. Often time if you are patient you can find the stuff you want on sale. newegg.com has some pretty good bargins from time to time and if you are lucky you will have a fry's in your neck of the woods....they have like 30-40 computer cases to choose from, 20-30 motherbds....usually all in stock.

Good Luck with it!

In regards to Dell vs HP....I would take a Dell over a HP any day of the week....I have had both brands of laptops and the HP just blows chunks. Only a year and the screen has gone out twice due to the lcd inverter...the hard drive crashed hard once and the second time I was able to recover it. I HATE HP!!!!

Yea, I honour those first programmers who spend the extraordinary amount of effort making the rest of our programming life much, much easier.

He didn't steal my time. He didn't even ask for it. It was a general question to no one in particular, and I volunteered a few suggestions, one of which happened to work. In fact, it wasn't even my suggestion, he thought of the solution on his own.

He has nothing to be sorry for, and he doesn't owe me anything.
