I currently live on campus, and have no plans after May 17th.
There's always the 'move in somewhere for 3 months and get a job to pay rent' option, but that's kind of boring.
Any ideas?

Work as a chofer<(sp) on a cruise ship. You get paid and get to take a cruise.

take up a new athletic hobby. Skateboarding, BMX, or something of the sort. Chances are if you do that the whole summer, you won't be half bad at the end, and you may be able to turn it into something more.

I live in NY.
And I'm looking for ideas where I can sustain myself. I know I can get a job at a bookstore, or as a tech over the summer, but location isn't of utmost importance.

You should look for hot international models to hit on, TELL THEM THEY ARE UGLY.. it helps to use reverse psycology.
Find out where those talent show s are filming "american idol, randy jacksons dance show , americas got talent....and crash the shows.
But as for sustainability i don't know.
NY is a big place with lots of opportunity.
I'd say to the cruise ship thing.

Go to Nantucket Island..it's off the North eastern coast. Mad bank there, you can get a job as a waiter and chill back as you get great tips and other 'perks' to the job... its something I'm considering....
I'll get you more details soon if you want.... living on an island is fun.

You should get a job somewhere not too urban with nearby wilderness, and just trying living in a tent all summer. Walk to work everyday, then come home to your hippie pad on the lake.

Water rafting companies
Good money, lots of fun, some of them provide a place to crash during the days you're not working.
I've been doing it off and on for years and highly recommend it for a summer experience.
Will agree with the "new skill" idea, too. My first summer in college a few of my friends and myself traveled to Florida for a summer and painted houses as a business for a few months. Maybe not the greatest concept in the world, but easy to learn and setup for, and easy to earn money at. If the more manual and blue collar work doesn't suit you, maybe brush up on your css and html and study hard at web design.
To the "goto California" one...you can't afford to just come out here and "live" for a few months without a real plan, don't bother.

it's funny you said painting because that's what I was actually thinking
I've done some painting before, mostly small offices that need to be completely re done (new carpets, usually fix old beat up walls, etc) and it's actually pretty decent work. It can be hard, but you certainly aren't going to break your back doing it
I had to renovate an old church once, that was actually a pain in the ass. The ceiling was about 40 feet up and covered in mureals(sp?) that had to be avoided, not to mention having to move all the pews and avoiding all the ceremonial stuff (irreplacable for the most part) but the money was good and it was a fun experience in the end

I'm going to be working on my Japanese for the next 8 months, since my teacher is going to be on sabbatical during the fall. During this time I hope to finish this kanji book I've been working on in 102, which equates to about 300 more kanji in the next 8 months.

First thing you should consider is moving from NY(unless you are talking Upstate NY) cost of living is too much.
Or you could try becoming homeless...find a good grocery cart and blend in...make sure you piss and crap in the street like the rest of them do....adds to the smell of NY City.
Read good books. Dante's Divine Comedy would be a good start.
