Ok heres the deal,

Today i bought a new computer http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8773259&st=compaq&lp=4&type=product&cp=2&id=1203815923563 I set it up perfectly and everything, vista is running fine.

Right now Im on a Dell Demension 4600 so its an oldschool computer, that is running internet through my modem to a wireless router, which has another ethernet cable going to the dell demension PC. All the lights indicating the wireless router is working are showing like in the setup CD, and i set up the network(i think). My new HP compaq computer isnt picking up the wifi signal still... is there anything im doing wrong? or are any of my computers missing hardware allowing me to recieve the wifi signal?

A bit more information would be helpful:
-Is your Wireless SSID being broadcast? People generally recommend that you don't broadcast it, but I've had experience with this causing wireless cards to not work properly
-What kind of encryption does it use? Did you set up the passkey on the computer to match that of the router?
-Does your new computer actually have a wireless card? I didn't see one listed in the specs at the link.

I suspect it's a problem of the computer not being configured properly, but these kinds of things aren't all that easy to solve without actually being there...

EDIT: More questions
-How far away is the computer from the wireless router? Did you try it with them in the same room?
-What kind of router is it anyhow?

Built-in high-speed 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 connector)

^im not sure thats the card your talking about, but thats what comes with the new computer. Im not even sure i set up a wireless connection, and im not sure how. This is what i see under network connections on my dell dimension computer that is old and has an ethernet wire attached too it indirectly through my wireless router http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/9472/123dc8.png

I'm really not sure if thats supposed to be a joke, but if it is, its very cruel.

I just read up on that link you posted, and it said that the comp doesn't even have built in wireless capabilities.... sorta like what +/- said

Sadly, he's being serious, and entirely correct.

It was not a joke. Many computers that come with built in wireless have a switch or button combo you can press to disable to disable the signal.

And, as pointed out by +-, that is not a wireless card. That is an ethernet card. The machine specs clearly say there is no wireless, so unless you bought it as an accessory, you don;t have any.

Your best bet is to go to a place like Staples and by a USB Wireless dongle. Usually less than $40, and easy to setup.

I've had trouble with the USB wireless cards in the past, honestly I think it's more worth the dough and taking apart the computer to insert a card. Just my opinion based on my experience though.

I've had trouble with any kind of wireless product in the past, and also success with other brands of the same product. A good USB dongle should be fine. Just don't get the cheapest one you see, and keep the receipt in case something goes wrong.

What router do you have Dark7?

Haha. I got a new laptop at work and struggled for the better part of the day trying to get wireless to work. I had it plugged in, so I had internet access, but it was bugging me that I couldn't connect to the wireless network. Sure enough, I just had to push the wireless button on the keyboard to activate the damn signal. I felt so silly.
