Hey everyone sorry if I posted this in the wrong section. I have a windows laptop and I was wondering if anyone could give me something that I could download to make my computer faster. It is very slow right now and it makes using it very frustrating. I do not have a lot of programs downloaded on here and I haven't been looking at porn on it yet so that isn't the problem.

If anyone could help me it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

Anyhow, some more info would be helpful:
-Operating system? (XP home, XP pro, Vista Home, Vista Ultimate, etc..)
-How long have you had the computer?
-How long have you had the problem?
-Do you have any antivirus software installed?
-What are the machine specs? (Processor type/speed, ram..)

As a first guess I'd say it's probably some type of virus, adware, or other bad program, just because that's what it usually is. Get an anti-spyware scanner and an anti-virus scanner if you don't have one. My personal recommendations are Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html) and avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html), both of which are free.

Alright, and when you first turn the computer on, what does it say on the logo that comes up on the display?

A laptop like that is going to be about 6-7 years old, so that might be the problem right there...

Also you don't really need to be a computer guy to answer the questions about how long you've had the problem.

Yes.
Find a friend with a Windows XP computer, get their boot disk and put it into your laptop.

Or go to Windows, you might be able to upgrade to Windows XP.

Alright. Well here's what's probably wrong with your computer: it's freaking ancient, in computer terms at least. I'm afraid there's really not anything you can put on it to speed it up. (*Removing* some software might speed it up, depending on what's on it; that's too much effort for me to help you with online though. Find a computer nerd friend who lives nearby...)

You can get an old version of iTunes for Windows 2000 here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes732forwindows2000.html

Of course since I still don't know if you have 2000 or 98, I can't say that it will work for you.

My friend set up a computer with windows 2000, took about 5 minutes to start up. I re-booted it with a Windows XP boot disk, and it's very fast now..
So yeah, I think you can make it faster..
Although, i'm not really that into laptops, but if it works kinda the same way, you can strip the parts, and buy new ones.

I'd say there was probably a lot more to it than "Windows XP made it faster". It was probably because using XP did a clean install and removed all the other crud that had accumulated from the 2K install. But that is a good point in that doing a clean install might help Cosmo out..

To an extent, but you generally can't replace the motherboard, and so that limits how far you can upgrade the other parts. You can replace the processor if you can find one that's compatible with that board though.

I meant Ram, memory, and such.

But you're right, i'm not really sure what else was on my friends computer, but there was a lot of crap that wasn't there after I re-booted it.

I would consider going to Add or Remove programs and just deleting a bunch of that garbage.

you should probably backup all your files and then re-install the operating system to restore it to its original speed (or a decent approximation thereof)

As far as processing goes, you are screwed. Make no mistake, nothing said here will help to a great degree. Computers get slow with time, even reformatting will not help drastically. However, it will help.

As far as download and upload speed goes, if you're dial up you're screwed and if you're not but still want to go faster then call your ISP and figure out what they have you capped out, then see what you can do to get that cap made higher.
