It's that time again! A new community has grown - new noobs await! DO NOT ASK TO PLAY IF YOU CAN'T LOG ON ONCE A DAY.

MAFIA - a game of deception, trickery, and the shameless stoning of innocent bystandards.

Traditionally the game's players are comprised of civilians, cops, and mafia members. For the purposes of TAO, we will be revising them as users, mods, and hackers.

The Story: The users in a game of TAO Mafia are members of a small online community which is being terrorized by hackers. During the night, the hackers cause chaos on the servers, hijacking a law-abiding user as their victim, and ultimately getting them deleted. During the day, the users gather together, seeking justice, and vote to convict one of their number of secretly being a member of the hackers , and getting them deleted.

The Objective: The mod and users need to figure out who the hackers are and delete them before it's too late. The hackers however need to try their best to avoid capture and deletion, and instead try to delete all the users and mods .

The catch: no one knows the role of any other player.

The order of events and rules:
-Anyone wanting to play must send me a PM (this thread will have a LOT of information on it once the game starts, so PM me your entrance and check back on this post for updates).
-Once all are gathered, each player will be PMed their role: mod , user , hacker. Each one is very important and entertaining to play. The rules for each will be explained in the PM and here
-I will present a game-opening post, announcing the threat of the incoming hackers . "Night" will fall, and I will ask the hackers to select a user victim via PM. That person is then out of the game. I will then ask the mod character who they would like to know about. The mod will select any player, and be told whether s/he is a hacker or normal user .
-The "Day" will arive, the deleted user will be anounced, and the remaining alive players all discuss who they think did it. All remaining players will reach a general concensus as to who they want to delete, and upon said deletion, be told whether that player was an innocent user or a 1337 hax.

This would conclude one round of the game, and it continues back to night, where the hackers strike again, and the mod comes a little closer to figuring out who did it. The mod may reveal him/herself at any time, but no other player has any reason to believe him. Usually if the mod reveals him/herself too soon, the hackers will just kill him off the next night. This is a game of lying and deceit (so some of you will be pretty good at it already) for the hackers, and cunning and perception for the users and mods.

The game ends if the innocents delete all the hackers, or when the hackers kill enough innocent players so that they can no longer be overpowered by them (example: 3 hackers and 3 innocents means the hackers can’t be voted to death as there is no majority on the good side).

PM me if you want to play (you do not get to pick your role, I do that once everyone is assembled, the PM just lets me know you want to play) – the game will begin in 24 hours!

I reserve the right to turn down newbiews every game (no comment about Snowolf needed...), and have in every game. My reasons are because any player can screw over all the other players by dropping out midway. Really, if multiple people do that concurrently, it drags down the game a lot. You've had an account here for a year, and only made 60 posts, and somehow managed to catch this game in the 24 hour signup period. That tells me either 1) that's a secondary account, or 2) you don't come here very often. Either way, I don't like those odds. So again I will ask: sit this one out, and please hop in the next game. Barring last minute PMs I'm receiving as I type this, the game is just about locked from new players. Later tonight you will all receive your rolls. (Pilsburry crescent, for those of you who are wondering)
To avoid the mistake of previous games of having the first night start with the night everyone gets their roles, the game will actually start tomorrow (Tuesday) night. This will give the mods and hackers enough time to login, speak with one another (if their role permits) and make an unrushed decision.

Much like last time, the size of this game is impressive, and I will need to split the hackers and mods into two groups again. I felt this added a good amount of complexity and kept the independent paranoia high without all the drawbacks of the additional characters we've tried in the past. It also prevents mods from creating safe houses of every person they've found to be users.

Details of how that setup works will be included in your confidential missions. :wink2:

For example, when mantis had to leave and he was the last hacker in the second mafia, uniq covered for him and pretended like hisher schedule was busy, and in the last one she had to post kills super late because KAP wouldn't tell her who to kill in a timely manner.

Pay attention to these kinds of things! It is some of the only actual evidence that exists in mafia.

I was hoping calling you annoyin would not hurt you that much! I am just a normal user this game. It is actually pretty sad. But having tried the hacker role in the past I will now have a good sense of who might the hacker be.

This is the real problem: hackers can't know if I am just putting a show as a fellow hacker, in the second cell.

Hackers will act like populists do in politics, they will try to say what most of the users want to hear and try to fit in. Something like what stryker did. The thing he said does not really mean much, becase now that it is said, it can be easily avoided. Then again he tried the subtle: "look at me I am a user, this is the way to fight against hackers". Hackers try not to be too vocal, but not too quiet either, so they are not suspicious. They normally do not have guts to say what they want most of the times, because of how risky it is. So when they indeed say something once in a while it is either sarcasm on the topic of how hacker they are or the subtle "I am a user, this is the way we will fight". I did the latter one in the previous game. KAP did the former one. I told him not to do it several times... he even included SMILEYS! That is when is a hacker trying to look honest. It got worse! KAP used rolleyes smileys, the most obvious hacker type smileys. And we still won. Because fortunately, KAP was the quiet type hacker. Those are the worst to fight against. When he became active, the users that still played were just not sharp enough to see through him(and he was helped by The Cheat a lot too).

The mod is the person who will be quiet, but unlike hackers will not try to not look suspicious. That is why he should be able to live for some time.


So what am I? A hacker? If you notice, what I just wrote was the a lot like the subtle "look at me I am a user, lets fight against hackers!" And I will use the words like sacrifice in this post like most hackers do. Then again, am I not acting too suspicious for this early in the game? Am I not risking getting killed right off the bat as one of 4 hackers?

A mod? No way. Never. I am not a mod.

A user? Yes. I am. But am I faking it? Am I just putting on a show? What if hackers kill me now that I said so much information about them? It is a good sacrifice. Will make the mod live longer! So I am all down for being killed early.

And my vote goes to stryker. For trying to be a populist. Other Hackers beware. (Hackers don't kill me, I might be from the other cell, even if you are a hacker stryker, do not kill me either, because if I indeed was a hacker who was just putting on a show, we would be two hackers short on day 1.)

You see, Unik is not using a randomizer when assigning roles to people. He tries to make it as interesting as possible, yet not easily predictable. He gives roles to strong players, to weak players, to experienced players, to unexperienced players. He uses his own brainpower to make the game interesting. That is how it went when I played the game live too. I could not be too loud last round because I was a hacker and I did not want to look suspicious, I will make up for it in the one long day of my game play.

And you are also trying to say I am giving away who is a mod. The thing is, you are not doing it all out. You are trying not to look suspicious. You are a real hacker. You need to see some material before voting, so that Jeffery does not need to spit out random numbers again for instance. You will not get that by being quiet. The drama has not started yet. If it starts it will be when a user accuses me of being a hacker and gives proper reasons. If he will not be defending, but attacking me without holding back. That is how you know who is a user.

Of course, I totally ruined it now, because I said it out loud, so a hacker could pretend to be a user this way and I would give him a good head start. If I was smart... I could even make my hacking partner the user this way, if I did not say it out loud.

How exactly do you people expect the game to start? It is the voting that will start, we have enough time to get ourselves some clues before we have to vote blindly. Or for hackers to get an idea who is good to kill and who is suspicious and who is a user on 100% and who might be from the other hacking cell. Lets exploit the time.
