View Full Version : Greatest Comic Book Villain?

So I was wandering the web, looking around at "The Dark Knight" stuff online and I stumbled across a list of Batman's Top-10 Villains. I thought it was interesting, and one thing led to another, and I've been looking up lists of the best comic supervillains for like 2 hours now. So I decided to see what the TAO community thought. Soooo... vote. Also, not being a huge comic geek myself, my list may be pretty crummy, but I think I did alright. Feel free to tell me if it sucks though. You might know better than I. But here'goes!
The Joker
An obvious front-runner for the title, Batman's arch-nemesis and an iconic supervillain. The guy is insanely... crazy? Don't let Heath Ledger's untimely demise be the only reason you vote for him.
http://z.about.com/d/comicbooks/1/7/d/B/joker.jpg
Magneto
A personal favorite of mine, being a big X-Men fan as a kid. Who wouldn't kill to control metal? Wanting to destroy all normal human beings doesn't hurt his case for the greatest.
http://students.hightechhigh.org/~clutze/HighSchool/Image/Magneto.jpg
Venom
Spiderman's yin. Or is it yang? Whatever. Venom is a badass. Try to ignore Topher Grace's portrayal of him when pondering your vote.
http://z.about.com/d/comicbooks/1/7/6/C/venom.jpg
Lex Luthor
Superman's greatest rival. Fights the perfect superhero with nothing but his own money, wit, and... evil. That works.
http://blog.miragestudio7.com/wp-content/uploads2/2008/05/lex_luthor_for_president.jpg
Dr. Doom
Despite The Fantastic Four being a lame movie, Dr. Doom has been a long-time mainstay in the Marvel universe, and for good reason. Great alliteration, great mask and cape... what more can be asked of a supervillain?
http://www.mondomagazine.net/mondo2_0/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/image-for-sams-list-doom.jpg
Galactus
Dude eats planets. Pretty obscure, but seriously? Planets?
http://www.gamerevolution.com/images/misc/galactus.jpg
Doomsday
It was tough picking only one between him and Darkseid, as both are fantastic villains, but I gave the nod to Doomsday for... you know... killing Superman. That's a pretty big deal in the realm of villainy.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b4/Doomsday.jpg
Green Goblin
A classic match-up in comics, and the only one that really worked for me in the Spidey movies, Goblin is as tricky as his name is catchy.
http://www.rapsheet.co.uk/Images/Characters/GreenGoblin3.jpg
The Red Skull
Easily the sleeper in this competition, The Red Skull's beef with Captain America is as classic as suicide doors, and with the help of some of the older forumers that actually know who he is, this Nazi could cause some fun discrepancies.

Other considerations:
Darkseid
Catwoman
Carnage
Apocalypse
Kingpin
Thanos
Ra's Al Ghul
Dr. Octopus
Violator
Dark Phoenix
Sinestro
Note: If you choose "Other," please do specify your pick in your post.

uhhhh how about Onslaught? Most powerful supervillan ever! Magneto and Xavier accidently fused together and went bad. Up to an entire team of superheroes to stop him (the avengers which consisted of Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Wolverine, and later issues Spiderman and the rest of the X-Men)

He's been incarnated three times. And the 3rd time he killed Peter Parker's parents. In the world war II era, Red Skull was an American businessman and a Nazi Agent who led a ring of spies and saboteurs. And he shared rooms with Adolf Hitler! He is just one awesome Old School Nazi Super Villain.
EDIT: That "dust of death" is one the most frightening assasination methods ever shown in comics. A fatal poison gas that distorts the victim's face into a "red skull". So freaking awesome!

How does one define the best supervillain tho? I mean, that big guy who eats worlds could pwnz just about anyone else, but he seems rather aloof. Not so much a villain as.... oblivious and uncaring, much like any other carnivore I know.
That Nazi guy is a Nazi, so that should get him some points, but then how does that play in with Godricks law?
The guy who killed superman is probably the stongest, but you have some devious villains like Joker and Lex.
I'd have to say the best villains are the ones which give the superhero a run for their money, and that generally isn't buy brute force, but well thought schemes.

My favourite villain, i.e. the one I thought was most interesting, was always Magneto. He was a pretty deep character with a lot of believable motivation, beyond just "Destroy the world!". But as for who the greatest villain is, that's a pretty tricky question. I haven't really read comic books for quite awhile though.
Venom

I'm surprised the Joker didn't get more love in this poll. Maybe he'll nab a few more votes after the movie opens.
I'm definitely more of a Marvel fan than DC, but I still think he's probably the all-time king of comic villains.

Fair question. It is subject to personal interpretation, but it definitely isn't about who can pwnz the rest of them. It's more about the essence of villainy. Who just does it for you? Your vote could be cast because you agree with their methods, like their motivation, think they're a total badass, always seem a step ahead of their respective hero counterpart, are a fan of their costume, or have just always thought of them when the word "supervillain" was mentioned since you were a child. It can be judged however you want. If how you describe in the last part of your post is what makes you think "villain," then that's what you should base your vote on.
Also, Godwin's* Law. And that's yet to come into play here.

I waited from the moment I heard they were comming out with the first spiderman movie to see Venom kick some Spiderman ass. They left him out of the first two, and then he kinda sucked in spiderman 3. But never the less, Venom kicks ass. Hes crazy, he talks to himself, and refers to himself as 2 people (which he is). Hes stronger than Spiderman, he forms his own webs instead of using those cartriges which spiderman does in I think most spiderman story lines (meaning his are virtualy unlimited), he can avoid Spiderman's spidey sense, hes just the ultimate anti-hero in Spiderman and seeing Spiderman come out on top over a bigger, stronger, scarier, and all around superior enemy is just good entertainment.

I gotta agree with Hugh on the Marvel > DC thing. Spider-man and the X-men are better than anything DC could ever come up with, and when you add Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Avengers, and Captain America, no contest. But, as for who I think of when I think of comic book villains, I think Batman's baddies do take the cake.
The Joker? Come on. What is scarier than an evil clown? I mean, Stephen King's scariest monster was a clown. And when I think of villains he is the first to come to mind, even before I saw clips of Ledger in The Dark Knight.
And let's not forget, Two Face, the Mad Hatter, the Riddler, the Ventriloquist (I am TERRIFIED of dolls), Clayface, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and the Penguin.
But my favorite villain has to be the Scarecrow. What is more horrifying than a villain who makes you experience the things that will be most horrifying to you. Bane may have been able to break the Batman physically, but the Scarecrow can break a hero mentally, and that's way more villainous.

I voted for Magneto, but I'm not so sure. I mean, I don't think he's evil. He's my favorite Marvel 'villain' though. Plus, he ripped Wolverine's adamantium off of him one time. (Think X-Men 1 when he suspends him in mid-air, and then think him removing all the metal. Brutal.)
Two-face is my favorite villain character for DC from a writer's perspective. I can't wait to see what they do with him in The Dark Knight. The actor is a good fit too, Thank You For Smoking was awesome.

Ahhhhhh! You mean Lex Luthor is a bad guy?! And I just bought most of small ville on D.V.D too! I'm not very far into the show...
Well, I haven't read any comics, but my uncle gave this collection of cards to me. It has super heroes/villains and there "Stats" like how strong they are or how fast they are ranked from 1-7 as well as brief histories, a picture of them, and stuff like how tall they are. Out of all those cards the villain that I always remember is Flin Flam Floom, or something like that. He was a massive dragon.
I also always remember Silver Surfer but I don't know whether he is a bad guy or good guy...
ponefish
07-17-2008, 07:41 AM
Silver surfer started out bad.... I'll shorten it for you
Silver Surfer becomes a slave to Galactus (who lives off of planets energy) so he will not destroy his home planet. Galactus gives SS a small portion of his power turnin him into the Silver Surfer. SS finds planets for Galactus to feed off of. SS leads Galactus to earth but becomes touched by the Fantastic Four. They fight off Galactus who then exiles SS to stay on earth (he puts up a invisible barrier). Doom tries to catch SS and does. Doom get pwned and SS gets his power back. SS declares war on humans. Army > SS. SS escapes through barrier with Mr. Fantastics help. Goes to his home planet to find it destoyed. Does errands for Galactius to get his planet back.....
Anyway in the end SS gets bent over cause he planet really destroyed and Galactus just set up a fake one for him.

I absolutely love Magneto...but he's not really evil. He's what society made him by constantly rejecting him and trying to kill him. He has the same goal as Professor X, but he goes about it in a very nasty way: Survival. He's my favorite, but not the greatest.
The Joker has lasted what...60 years? And he's still a great villain? That's hard to keep going, so he has to be a great villain if people can keep coming up with storylines for him.
Green Goblin knew who Spiderman was, and used that against him. He killed Gwen Stacy right in front of him! He tormented him. He caused so much mental anguish, and that's much more villainous than physical pain.
I like the metaphor for The Red Skull. Y'know, democracy vs. communism. That whole shpiel. It just adds to who Captain America is, and no matter how many times Captain America took him down, he came back. He represents evil, and that it will always be around.
I can't decide. :(

Honestly, I think Carnage would have more votes than Venom. Carnage's alter ego Cletus Kasady was a psychopath, and at a young age he tortued his dog. His childhood was pretty messed up. His mother tried to kill Cletus but was then killed by his father.
Cletus cared for his mother and dug up her body in Maxium Carnage in which he atlast, morned over the loss of his Mother. Back with the killing the family, Cletus killed his grandmother by pushing her down the flight of stairs.
After that Cletus became a Orphan, his Anti-Social behavor made him a target for Abuse. Cletus vindicates himself by murdering the disciplinarian administrator and burning down the orphanage.

I dunno about some of these villains though. I mean Galactus eventually was revived to life to fight Abraxes or w/e and saved the universe and actually had a conscience for all the people he killed
Doomsday, sure ya he killed superman. But anyone could just obtain some kryptonite, sneak up on Superman as it's weakening him and shove it down his throat. Doomsday was waaayyy too overpowered, as was Superman. I mean like, dooms doesn't even die, he just adapts to w/e last 'killed' him.

I'm a fan of Carnage too, but I still think he isn't popular enough to get a "greatest" vote. I will secede that he's more of a badass than Venom, but I think Venom's commercial appeal and the fact that he's the original symbiote... fucking... guy? pulls him ahead. But then again, I didn't vote for Venom either, so whatever. Maybe Carnage deserved a spot on the poll, but in place of who? I think the only plausible one is Green Goblin. Great villains are foils. Luthor to Superman, Joker to Batman, Dr. Doom to Reed Richards, Venom to Spiderman, Red Skull to Captain America, Magneto to Professor X, etc. etc.
The best villain has red hair, a great body, crazy cool abilities, and no foil. Jean Grey doesn't count as a foil to the Phoenix, cause you can't really be a foil to yourself.

Idk a lot about Daredevil, but in that movie he had sonar(sP) which gave him the ability to see things better than the rest of us.
Superhero;
-a hero, esp. in children's comic books and television cartoons, possessing extraordinary, often magical powers.
-A figure, especially in a comic strip or cartoon, endowed with superhuman powers and usually portrayed as fighting evil or crime.
Powers;
-a person or thing that possesses or exercises authority or influence.
-ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something.
I think that qualifies Batman as a superhero. I don't think anybody in the world today could do what he does.

But just slightly off topic...
How does this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=5BdA7Mky5HA)become this?! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=usIyEL7ut5A)

The prison scene with Batman interrogating him? Awesome.
Movie Dark Phoenix sucks. In the bad way, but the category is comic book, sooo...<3333

I just like the beginning.
"Want to see me make this pencil disappear?" Hardcore.
Yeah, except there was literally no blood in the movie... And there were a few parts where there really should have. Like the magic trick for example...

If you've seen the Dark Knight, the Joker would get your vote.
Agreed.
I voted red skull, cause i mean, come on.
But i wish i had voted joker, now the greatest superhero movie villian of all time.

I think the magic trick scene was done perfectly, with the pen just dissapearing and the table being bear, i think blood would have screwed that scene up. however when we cut up the black guys mouth, there definately could have been a little gore there.. just a little..

But this is Greatest Comic Book Villain. Which is why you voted Red Skull.

Well said mino.
Well said mino.
Joker really isn't that great in the batman comics. He's only really got these votes because of the film.

Does she really count? I mean she really dosnt plan on being evil with all her heart, like she isn't devoted to it.

She is a psycho who craves life for sustenance. You tell me.
GOD was a pretty good villain for "The Preacher."
I remember I got about 7 years worth of that comic book, and read them all in about 8 days. An amazing series...

You clearly don't know the history of Dark Phoenix. Dark Phoenix is NOT Jean Grey. Stop posting.

The Dark Phoenix is one of the two entities of Jean Grey. In other words the Dark Phoenix is kinda like a virus and Jean was just its host.
