Anyone use this OS? I'm soooo tired of Vista for reason I'm not even going to start to list.

What are the limitations of Ubuntu?

Thanks for the help

I've used Ubuntu before. I like Vista better.

So my laptop crashed and I assumed it was the HD... I was wrong. Apparently it's actually my Laptop's driver capabilities for reading windows...? My HD worked in my roomates and friends computers, but not in my own. So we wiped the HD, saved some of my stuff, installed XP (I had vista before)... it worked on other computers but not on mine. After playing around for 2 days trying to troubleshoot, my buddy had the idea to try Linux on the HD--and so far it's worked (shakily--it has crashed once and we had to reload it).

So it sounds like its a problem with my laptops drivers themselves, but for the time being I'm with Linux/Ubuntu. It's actually pretty sweet. Very customizable and pretty straight forward. I already installed Wine so I could get windows programs...

-HOWEVER-

I can't seem to figure out how exactly to install Trillian to make it work. I have the application installed (I DL'd it from cerulean then installed it with Wine), but every time I try to add a connection it says "the servers aren't downloaded" blah-deblah. Is there something about Wine that I don't quite understand?

Any bit of Linux/Ubuntu or Wine wisdom is appreciated. Also, any nifty apps that you may have or know of would be nice to know as well. I tried googling this crap but Linux people don't seem to understand the concept of "beginner" and speak in ways that are like a small town in Poland: unrecognizeable.

Linux is a good OS for those who know their stuff and don't mind working around compatibility, frequent updates, and a terminal, although Ubuntu is very newb friendly. Otherwise, stick with Vista, XP, or 7.

Oh, and it will seem like a fantastic OS until the excitement wears off and you realize that, because of the many flavors of Linux, developers tend to ignore it or save it for last as far as updates.

Other than complaints of being a memory hog, no one I know personally has any trouble with Vista other than the occasional compatibility. XP gets my vote until 7 arrives.

Whatever you decide to go with, lower your expectations. No OS is even close to perfect.

Ubuntu is the bomb. It is my secondary OS. I don't use it all of the time because sometimes I find it tedious to perform certain actions that are very easy on Vista. Open Office FTW (although, that's Linux and Windows).

Open office?
Open Office is a open source version of most of the Windows Office programs. There are versions for Mac, PC and Linux computers. In some cases the Open versions are lacking several key features, but in general it kicks ass.

And it's free.

I agree, though I can't admit to having run into any issues just using it for school. Gotta love freeware.

OOo is great, I have it installed on most my machines at work, the rest carry an old copy of Office '03 which does all that I need. I'm quite impressed with Windows 7, anyone else tried out the beta? I had it running on an older XP machine pretty stable too.

The only Linux based systems I ever really used was some Red Hat and TinyMe.

How's the compatibility? Does it read docx files?

I tried it on my old xp desktop and it ran surprisingly smooth. Once the one of the 6 versions are released, I'm waving farewell to vista. (Although I've disabled so many chunky features on vista and tweaked the registry so much, it runs about as fast as 7 if not faster)

Word 2007 does though, right? I'm just concerned because a lot of my prof's send stuff in docx word files.

Trillian doesn't work so well on Wine, although you can very well use:

Kopete, the KDE instant messenger
Pidgin: (formerly gaim)

to get all that cross connectivity down

openoffice reads doc and docx files, docx is written in a standard open xml file (open office can open) most files natively or occasionally with an addin

Trillian is beat. It has so many page faults a second I could have 50gb of memory and it would still hinder performance. Not to mention it leaks memory badly.

Jeffery

I've tried OO with .docx and it doesn't open. And there aren;t any add-ons that allow it too.

As for trillian, I have had it up for 6 days now, and the memory is 6,000k. Never had a problem with it.

So I have been trying to find this OS today but have no luck. Anyone know of a blackmarket OS that was supposedly funded by porn companies because of the lack of funding? I have heard about it being better then Vista and thought about trying it.

Okay now I'm having serious issues.

Before I made the switch to ubuntu, I was using itunes on Vista. I had about 70 itunes bucks on my account. But Linux doesnt seem to want to recognize itunes at ALL. I've googled this to no avail. Very frustrating. Is there a way to access the store or get my files that I already bought from them able to play on something other than itunes?

I dont see why Apple just doesnt release a version of itunes for linux.

PearPC, mac-on-linux, Basilisk,
SheepShaver, qemu

Look into those. They are similar to Wine supposedly. That's just what my linux guru tells me.

Apple doesn't cater to minorities and you shouldn't be using itunes to begin with.
