View Full Version : Taking things for granted

I tore 2 ligaments in my ankle 5 days ago playing basketball with some of my coaches.. and it was probably the worst pain in my life when it happened. I was there on the concrete (we were playing outside) for about an hour in a half in extreme pain ( I was there so long because we couldn't call an ambulance.. b/c we could not afford it and had to wait for my mom or my brother (blex) to get there to take me). After I was taken to the hospital all sorts of things were rushing through my head.. like how long until I can play basketball again.. how long.. until I can even walk... again. I have to admit it was really scary not knowing how long your not going to be able to walk for.. After they gave me some hyrdrocodone for the pain they took me to get an x-ray (at this point they didn't know if it was broken or something worse). Sitting in that waiting room just wondering how bad it was felt like it took hours. Then the doctor came in and told me that nothing was broken, then they did an MRI and figured out that it was something worse. That I had torn 2 ligaments in my ankle and that I wouldn't be able to walk for about 7-8 weeks. The even worse part was that he said even when I could walk it still would not be 100% to play basketball and I would have to do rehab to hopefully get it back to where it was. Basketball is one thing that I was really good at.. being point guard and being leader of my team. When he told me I wasn't going to be able to play for the whole season of my senior year of high school.... it hit me like a ton of bricks. So now I'm on crutches.. and well.. I took alot of things that I could do before for granted. Like walking, getting water, taking a shower, ect.. doing stuff for myself that now either has to take 10 times more effort or that I would need someone else to help me with (like opening doors). It's only been 5 days and I realize I took all those things for granted when I had them, and it sucks not being able to do stuff when something like this happens. And was wondering if anyone had anything like this happen to them, to make them realize they were taking things for granted.

Real mature lets point out that I have dyslexia. Instead of putting it in public, why don't you just pm me instead of being an asshole. When I look at a word I have to say it and then sound it out.. and sometimes I spell things wrong, I didn't catch it because firefox knows that it's an actual word and not that I'm using it wrong. That's why I usually don't post threads because I know people like you would rather point out the negatives rather than just replying to the thread and then saying.. o ya.. by the way it's granted not granite.

My friend tore some muscles in his leg a few months back, and got stuck in a wheelchair for 6 weeks and went borderline crazy. Slight exaggeration, but he said it was easily the worst experience he's ever had, and he now sympathizes with everyone in wheelchairs now. I usually don't take things like this for granted because every time I see someone with a disability, mental or physical, I'm reminded how lucky I am to be perfectly normal. The good news is that while you are stuck in crutches for a while, you will eventually be back to normal, although it does suck with the timing for you senior year and everything. I'd recommend trying to find something new and enjoyable that you can do until you are able to play basketball again, never know what you might like. Anyways, I hope you do well and recover fully.

Well, i've been in your situation before.
Not to the full extent, but close.
5th grade, i broke the end of my fibula by rolling my ankle. I stepped on my friend's footing while playing monkey in the midle, yeah stupid:rolleyes:
So i was out for 5 weeks, missing baseball season-being on crutches, etc.
I truly sucked i realized how much we do have for granted.
Then, last spring, i got mono.
For some reason, it was a really bad case. My mouth completely swelled shut.
I couldn't eat for 2 weeks. Each morning, i had to peel my lips apart so i could drink some special drink to survive. It drained me. I couldnt talk, walk, or even sit up. I slept 18 hours a day, and was still tired. I knew my life sucked when i wished it ask for water, but i couldn't. I ended up losing about 30lbs in 2 weeks. I am still not up to the weight i was back then. Again, i missed baseball for an extended amount of time. Even when i got my apatite(sp?) back, i still didnt have the stremgth to do much, missing more baseball.
I felt like you did, letting down your team. The good thing is, the team should respect your leadership enough to help you out, and make you feel welcome.
I feel bad for you thunder, and i hope you realize it isnt the end of the world or anything. Goodluck to your recovery.

First off, I'm sorry to hear about your injury thunder. Although I certainly didn't have such a severe injury, I definately know what it is to sit on the sidelines for a season. Best of luck.
I prefer taking things for limestone.
I guess he was supposed to take your comment as sympathetic? No, thunder was dead on.
Now you'll refuse to "back down" while you backpedal as fast as you can. Your ego won't permit you to say you are sorry, or admit you were wrong.
All this would be fine, if you just acted this way on the forum. But my guess is that attitude acts out in your real life as well. My guess is people despise it there as well.

That sucks, Thunder. I tore ligaments in my ankle about 8 years ago. Brutal. I feel your pain.
I hope you have a full and complete recovery, even though it won't be speedy. Easy on the Twinkies while you're couching it, and the painkillers. You don't want to develop a bad habit.
In fact, if you are prescribed any strong drugs, you might want to let me hang onto them for you. Just to be safe.
:)
Bla bla, boo hoo, I thought what meat said was funny as shit, but meh. Not saying i'm not sympathetic about your injury thunder. I can imagine having to watch everyone else has to suck major balls, Gl on the recovery.

I did have temporary blindness for about 70 minutes, right when arrived at the hospitol I got my vision back. They ran tests and couldn't come up with a likely source. So they told me it was probably from stress. *insert comment about an eye-opening experience*

Didn't this forum used to have thick skin/ be able to take a joke? When did that die? Did I miss that?
People are so freakin' soft.
You're right iceman, I would have pointed it out in person. In fact, I have a roommate who constantly misspeaks (by talking about the chemical compound "pneumonia--he meant to say ammonia). And I poke fun at him. The difference is that he laughs at his own silliness and moves on. Apparently it's more difficult for others. I'll keep that in mind and not assume the average person wont get flippant and offended by everything from now on. Good lord.

You are able to make a joke, it did not die, and no you did not miss it. I bet everyone here has something they are really touchy on... and that is one of mine.. You don't see me freaking out in every post when someone makes a joke.. And I'm saying poking me for spelling something wrong is not the answer and if you didn't know then then you know now. Your acting like your 5 years old pushing my button just because you can. Now you know what it is stop it. And people don't get offended by everything, that's just an over dramatization and you know it. Your joke was making fun of how I spelled something because I have a disorder.. ya hilarious.. probably funny to you guys because your on the outside, you don't know how it affects me day in and day out when I get corrected on that shit 24/7. You think being a senior is fun when you can't even spell some words correctly? It's just a touchy subject and it's not funny to me.

"Cry Me A River"
You were my sun
You were my earth
But you didn't know all the ways I loved you, no
So you took a chance
And made other plans
But I bet you didn't think that they would come crashing down, no
You don't have to say, what you did,
I already know, I found out from him
Now there's just no chance, for you and me, there'll never be
And don't it make you sad about it
You told me you loved me
Why did you leave me, all alone
Now you tell me you need me
When you call me, on the phone
Girl I refuse, you must have me confused
With some other guy
Your bridges were burned, and now it's your turn
To cry, cry me a river
Cry me a river-er
Cry me a river
Cry me a river-er, yea yea
I know that they say
That somethings are better left unsaid
It wasn't like you only talked to him and you know it
(Don't act like you don't know it)
All of these things people told me
Keep messing with my head
(Messing with my head)
You should've picked honesty
Then you may not have blown it
(Yea..)
You don't have to say, what you did,
(Don't have to say, what you did)
I already know, I found out from him

Now you tell me you need me
When you call me, on the phone
(When you call me on the phone)
Girl I refuse, you must have me confused
With some other guy
(I'm not like them baby)
Your bridges were burned, and now it's your turn
(It's your turn)
To cry, cry me a river
(Go on and just)
Cry me a river-er
(Go on and just)
Cry me a river
(Baby go on and just)
Cry me a river-er, yea yea
Oh
(Oh)
The damage is done
So I guess I be leaving
Oh
(Oh)
The damage is done
So I guess I be leaving
Oh
(Oh)
The damage is done
So I guess I be leaving
Oh
(Oh)
The damage is done
So I guess I be... leaving

Cry me a river-er, yea yea

Cry me a river
Cry me a river, oh
Cry me a river, oh
Cry me a river, oh
Cry me a river, oh

Update: I went to a sports injury specialist to see what else I could do for my ankle because It still did not go down in swelling and it was not healing. So basically they took ANOTHER x-ray (no idea why) and then gave me this big medical boot that basically makes my foot immobile so it can heal properly. It's easier to put pressure on it but I still cannot walk. He said it was going to be about 4-6 weeks, which is a lot better then what the doctor at the ER told me so horah for that! Basically just going to keep going back to that doctor to check up every week or so. Thanks again for all the best wishes and I will update more in about a week.

My opinion, injury sucks, but meat's comment was clever, as I had originally clicked on the thread yesterday to make a similar comment, scrolled down, saw he made it, tried to rep him, failed, and proceded to read your post. Injuries suck, but you will get better. A girl on our cross country team tripped and lacerated her pancreas(couldn't run for 8 months, was out of school for a while too), but she was back this year, and was kick-ass.

4-6 weeks is about right. The doctors were a bit shocked when my friend's ankle fully healed in 3 weeks after he had mushed it up in a hole in his yard. But yeah, I wouldn't worry about it, ankle injuries usually don't have too many permanent effects. Unless of course you keep injuring it but my friend is just as fast as he was before.

Oh! I just learned about that. Was it the anterior talofibular and the calcaneofibular ligaments? If they didn't tell you which one, did the ankle twist towards the center of your body so that you put weight on the pinky-toe side of the ankle? It's one of the more common ways to hurt yourself there. The silver lining is that there are 3 ligaments on that side of the ankle that connects that side of your foot to your leg. Had you nailed all three... eek.
Update: It's easier to put pressure on it but I still cannot walk. He said it was going to be about 4-6 weeks, which is a lot better then what the doctor at the ER told me so horah for that! I wouldn't be so quick to hoorah. I recommend you stick with the person who had a detailed look at an MRI, not the guy who saw nothing on an x-ray and told you what you wanted to hear. All I'm saying is, plan for longer, and hope you are pleasantly surprised. The last thing you want to do is rush things, and then screw it up more. Just take it easy - there is basketball after high school. :)

Had you nailed all three... eek.
Calcaneous = Ankle, right?
Or is that talus? Its been a while.... :(

Get well soon.
What field of study of you in? (assuming its something medical :p)

Update: Went to the sports specialist today and he said everything looks great actually. He said I'm healing double time and almost all the swelling has gone down. He said there is still one of my ligaments that is healing and I still need to keep the boot on for about another week. But he coulden't believe his eyes of how fast I healed, which made me really happy :). Then he said I could play basketball this year and I just got even more happy :D . Very good update today, hopefully a week I can start rehab towards basketball this year.

I know what you were doing and what your doing now. You disgust me. And yo u should be ashamed of yourself. You were making fun of the thread name instead of posting your opinion or if it happened to you. I bet you posted that before you even read it. Your not who I thought you were, your worse, everyone was right about you and I never thought it was true.. but I guess I was wrong. Interpret that.

Anyway, hope ya get better quick Thunder. That would suck so bad. If I ever got injured and couldn't play sports, workout, and stuff, I'd be so pissed.

Thanks mantis, your right, it did suck a whole bunch looking on from the sidelines and watching my team try to go through practice without me.. Not walking was.. ugh it was horrible.
Good News/Update: I am fully mobile now, and I do not have to wear my boot anymore and I'm starting to ease my way back into basketball practice. When I went to go see the doctor he thought it was amazing how fast I healed. It still feels like a weaker version of my other ankle but, I can see improvement in it everyday. And I thank all of you TAO'ers that were concerned about me, and gave me advice and good wishes. My road to recovery is almost complete, I just have a few more stop signs before I am 100% :)

I did have temporary blindness for about 70 minutes, right when arrived at the hospitol I got my vision back. They ran tests and couldn't come up with a likely source. So they told me it was probably from stress. *insert comment about an eye-opening experience*
Wow, what an eye-opening experience.
...
I've got nothing.
But hey, speaking of eye-opening experiences and hilarious verbal slips, I've got a recent story to tell...
Okay, so I went out to the beach with two of my bandmates, who love bodyboarding (I, being hydrophobic, stick to the land). While they were out, I walked out along the sand to the rocky part shoreline and climbed some ways up a ledge to meditate on a rock facing the beach. I spent probably about a half hour meditating there when I had a sort of out-of-body experience, where I watched myself (from really, really high up, I appeared very small) walking the same route I got to the ledge from. Suddenly I (the one I was watching) bent down to pick up a grain of sand, which turned into a white ball in my hand.
So I was walking back, minding my own business, and I decided I'd just go back the way I came. At about the point where the shorline transitions from rocky to sandy, I stop myself in my tracks. Remembering my vision, I turn around, walk about ten paces back along the original route, and bend down to pick up a white ball that was partially hidden in a crevice between two rocks that I hadn't seen on my way up.
Naturally I was ecstatic. I carried the ball back with me and didn't let it out of my sights, and when my bandmates got back, I told them all about what happened. By this point I was all excited over the whole thing, so I told them that I had had a vision while I was meditating out over the shoreline, and that I had imagined myself pulling a ball that materialized out of the sand, "and sure enough, when I was walking back I happened upon this baseball! Neat, huh?"
"That's a softball, dude."
Devastation.
"But hey, at least you almost had a Zen moment, huh?"
Sure enough, the ball had "Softball" embroidered on it, like all softballs do. It's also much larger than a baseball, like all softballs are. But one slip-up of that kind results in what y'all might call an epic fail. :D
