View Full Version : Experimental ODT Series: TAL rewards

A lot of ODTs (one day tournaments) are run these days, which is good. But a lot of them are slow-paced, with more time spent talking in the lobby than actually in game, and with a lot of time waiting for enough players, and lots of people wanting to join later but missing out. This all violates the spirit of the ODT, which should be fair, but fast-paced and tolerant of latecomers. It would be great to engineer an ODT format which satisfies all of the following requirements:

1. There are never lots of players in the lobby instead of battling each other
2. Minimum lag between announcement of tourn and wait for sufficient number of players to begin
3. No special requirement for number of players to make neat rounds (e.g, multiples of two)
4. No byes
5. Relatively long window to join at beginning of tourn
6. Simple rules
7. Rules cannot be exploited (e.g., there is no benefit to intentionally taking long time in your battle)
8. Fair; i.e. final standing of players is as good as possible a representation of skill demonstrated
9. Reasonable length of time
10. Interesting and fun

To this end I will run a few experimental ODTs. The first will be run sometime this Saturday afternoon (3:30 PM PST if all goes well). TAL points will be rewarded for people who are into that kind of stuff. Edit: This Tourn already happened.

Innovative ideas, as always, are appreciated.

The first experimental tourn definitely succeeded in points 1-5. Poinst 6-10 maybe not so much. Refinement is needed to the style.

Another experimental tourn will be run pretty soon, completely different format (I have lots of ideas). However, it will still be experimental, which means expect things to be kind of rough sometimes.

That style was amazing but the tournament structure was meh...Id love to just have a bracketed tournament in that style.

Nah, then you lose the aspect of the chaotic betting.

The entire thing was amazing. Just WAY too long. Definitely not a 30 person tournament, if you want to free-for-all it.

Zad - in answer to your question, first you will need to go to the hardware store and buy the proper parts to make a time machine.

Second, you will need to get in the time machine and travel back to last saturday, 2/28, because that is when the tournament happened.

After that, you're on your own.
