Okay.. not usually one to make these threads, but after a few quick google searches without finding the answer, I'm asking here.

The previous version of AIM I had (6.8, the newest one), is not compatible with my OS (Vista Ultimate), and it actually screwed up my computer.

Is there a version of AIM that is compatible with Vista Ultimate? I kind of need AIM, but I'm not going to download it if it's going to mess up my computer again...

Use Trillian.

Their site doesn't specify which Operating Systems it works for, that I can see at least. Would it be compatible?

I use it on Vista Premium. Works fine for me.

Use Trillian like they mentioned or Digsby(which has integrated social networking features and eye candy). Trillian uses less memory.

I'm not worried about memory. All I'm worried about is compatibility.

I attempted to download Trillian and it just froze when I began to download it, and my computer went all screwy. I got it back to normal now, but I'm not going to try to download it again.

And no, my computer isn't really messed up... I just had it fixed yesterday. Vista just sucks.

Sounds like a more YOUR computer problem than Vista problem. I've been running Trillian for more than a year on my laptop.

HOWEVER. It could be the AIM that you had installed that's still messing up your system. AIM 6.5 can screw your network connections up royally on Vista Ultimate.....

You say you had your computer "fixed". Explain.

First I went to the tech people at my school, the guy ran a scan and deleted some stuff that was messing it up.

It still wasn't completely fixed (I couldn't always even login.. bleh), so I told my parents and my dad called a computer technician. I gave him the laptop yesterday. I got it back this morning, and it was working fine. My dad told me that the technician said that the reason it was screwed up is because the version of AIM I had wasn't compatible and tried to change the registry in order to run.

Maybe I had AIM 6.5 and not 6.8 (the new one), I think that must be what it was. Still, just downloading Trillian didn't go over well. As soon as I ran the installation process, it froze right at the first part (where it says it will put all the files in C:/Program Files/Trillian).

Sounds like the problem is still the AIM screwed up your network connections, which is why it screwed up on downloading Trillian.......

Have you tried restoring your system to a date before you initially downloaded AIM?

I'm fairly sure that the technician did that, because when I received the computer back there was no AIM installed on it.

Oh, I forgot to mention, the I was running on AIM on my Vista laptop fine when I was working on an ad campaign for it. It was then immediately hunted down and uninstalled.

meebo.com is good if you don't wanna install anything and just use aim temporarily.

I used to just use Meebo. ...But, now I have it so whenever I log on to gmail to check my mail, it automatically logs me on AIM, so I don't have to download anything/log on to Meebo. Meebo works well though, if you have multiple screennames/messaging systems that you use so I'd recommend it.

Noooo waaaay. I've been using it since it came out and have had less spyware than when I used Trillian.

Truth be told, doesn't really matter. I actually like both. I just think Disby is sleeker.
