I'd be willing to make the trip from Boston. I have fifteen years kickboxing experience and am at about a blue belt level in BJJ. I'm officially a white belt, but I trained no gi before I started training gi with ATT.

I might have to come up there and train and spar with you guys. This summer of course I might find away but it would seem to be a bit of fun. I did train with Elite Performance for awhile which is located in Salt Lake City. Gotta love the high elevation for the conditiong but it can kill ya literally. I love'd while I was there; but, they were too nice to some of the guys. One guy showed up an hour late and didn't have to do anything to make up the hour? My current coach would had killed me. I've been doing Boxing for about 8-9 years, BJJ for about 3, I have my Green Belt. Long ways to go I know but I want to learn everything about it and all of the aspects. Muay Thai I haven't really training in but when I do it's always a blast, I just love taking blows and delievering them.

The reason I said Green, I was 13 when I started doing little kid Jiu-jitsu I guess you call it, the highest belt you can get is Green. White, Yellow, Orange, Green is how that system goes. That's 15 and under. Now that I'm an adult is what'd they consider it, I have a white belt. It's gonna be awhile before i get the Blue.

So you were just on a children's system that incorporated more belts due to the rate of juvenile progression? That makes sense. It sounded like you were working with someone who decided to make up their own belt system.
So I'm assuming that you're on the normal BJJ system now?

I would definately be willing to hit up one of our gyms ach, seeing as most of my college buddies I used to train with are gone, I am trying to get in some training with people besides at my gym, people im less familiar with and werent taught the same style as I.

Yes. The other reason I said the green belt, That's how far I got in Kempo. I don't like Kempo at all in complete honesty. We had a terrible instructor who literally favored people too much.
That's no reason not to like it though. It's foolish to formulate an opinion of an entire martial art based upon just one bonehead who didn't know what he was doing.
Kempo is no different than Muay Thai, Savat, Pradal Serey, any type of sport kick boxing. Kempo is just sport kick boxing adapted for street combat. Take Muay Thai and enter in all the things that are illegal in competition. When you clinch with someone in Kempo, you grab them by the throat with one hand and drive your thumb into their eyeball with the other.
I have a black belt in Kempo, and have never had any problem hanging with any kick boxers of other martial arts. I've sparred with the who's who in the area and have found that what I do is really no different than what they do.
Like I said, don't get hung up on one school's bad projection of a martial art. That's just way, way, way too large a generalization.

I've been training forever. I put on a gi when I was just five years old and never looked back. I'm twenty now, and I've yet to actually stop at any point.
I have a black belt in Kempo, and have also been extensively training BJJ for some time now. However, BJJ has only become full time recently. I've also cross trained at various points in Muay Thai, Kali, Judo, Krav Maga, to name a few amongst many others.
I've never had any type of pro MMA fight, but I have kick boxed my fair share. And while there is that lack of a pro MMA fight, I have fought under unified rules in gyms and whatnot with various training partners at every weight. So it's something I do have quite a bit of experience in.

And I completely agree with you, but why do you think EVERY Kempo school is going to operate the way your's did?
I teach Kempo, I have for years. I show no favoritism, and the class isn't a way for me to show everyone how great I am. I devote way more time to sticking around and helping people than I'm even paid for, and go way out of my way to open the school on days there aren't even any classes so people can come in and train and ask questions in a much less regimented atmosphere than a normal class.
And you know what? There are plenty more people like me. Adversely, there are plenty more people like your teacher out there who are just a waste of time. Further, there are plenty of Muay Thai, BJJ, Savat, and other various schools with fat headed teachers that absolutely suck to learn from because all they want to do is either beat on your or show off.
Like I said, you can't base your opinion of an entire martial art off of one guy who was a hack. That's just jumping the gun. Do you really believe that every Kempo school is like the one you were at? Even more, do you really believe that this type of behavior isn't just as prevalent in EVERY martial art?
Your conclusion is just way to premature, man. And I hear what you're saying, it SUCKS to have a teacher who shows favoritism and wastes your time with half assed techniques. I'm right there with you man, I wholeheartedly agree. But try not to let that one guy ruin your perception of an entire martial art, you know?

Hmmm, lets see your opinion Ach. Ive been trainining at a gym that is just an all around MMA gym. Muay thai, wrestling, boxing, jiu jitsu are the main aspects. Everything you pretty much need to know atleast some of in order to have a chance in an MMA bout. Im in love with jiu jitsu far more than the others, wrestling also, but im the best wrestler at the gym, and been doing that for a while, so really wanna work on my jiu jitsu. Ive been picking it up pretty fast. The gym I go to is no gi, no belts, just train. I was thinking about starting to go to a gi, strictly jiu jitsu gym, but dont want it to be a waste of time, moving really slowly into it, through stuff I already know, just because he sees me as a white belt and wants to teach me as if I knew nothing, just coming into it.
Ya think it'd be worth it to go to a gi gym also? The place I go is pretty much teach you new crap for an hour, go live for the last 2 hours and ask questions as needed, and I feel its a quicker way to learn.
Ächilles
03-27-2009, 06:19 PM
Going to a gi gym would definitely not be a waste of time.
Remember, while you may know the beginner techniques - you're not perfect at them. It ALWAYS pays to run through them, no matter how long you've been training or how incredible you may be at any given point. Regardless of what martial art you're training, never forget: you're only as good as your basics.
Further, by training gi, not only do you get to work on your basics more, but you'll get an entirely new perspective on them with a gi. Your core value will just become a whole heck of a lot more dynamic after you've seen both sides. I actually just got back from a no gi class, whereas I've already been to two gi classes this week. It's really, really interesting seeing how my gi techniques translate to no gi and vice versa.
That's my two cents on it.

I get what your saying, Enjoy what you do no matter what basically. I need to get out to where you live and have you teach me a few things.
Damn, too bad where I live is just TKD, Karate and/or Boxing. It really sucks.
I kinda want to learn something different since I've always liked throwing kicks but never really liked none of the above. Although a friend of mine that used to train TKD told me he recently moved to something with a really weird name I forgot because it was more violent.. Dang I forgot the name.. Anyways. I think I might buy a DVD about Capoeria Basics, you know, the Jinga and stuff, and learn a bit and become a bit more flexible..
I really want to find something I can train and not just stick with playing videogames and soccer.

Whats better then sparring with a friend and showing each other different things? You'd cream me I'm pretty sure, this will sound lame but I'm not the best against kickboxing. I've been trying to find someone that practices the russian styles of fistfight/sambo/systema. I've had no luck on it so far, but I am fairly interested.
I have a runners body, with no weight lifting at all so i'm a skinny little guy. Now with me telling the truth about that, it'll seem like a lie with what styles I am rounded in so far. I wrestled for 3 years, boxed for 2 years( didn't join any of the boxing gyms around here, but I sparred with my friends who did box), I have some kickboxing down but not enough to really count as a kickboxer. Other than those, I just slugged it out with people who fought with me outside of school/work(Coffin and Frost can confirm this if you don't believe me). I'm not into it as much as my little brother, but I did work with him once in awhile when I still lived with him.

You need formal training from a legitimate instructor operating out of proper facilities, regardless of the martial art. You will not make any real progression until you make this true, HW.
Sambo is great if you can find a school. Check out Pankration too, somewhat similar, albeit very difficult to find in the United States.

The only problem I have with it is i'd have to move way out of state to go to the closest school. I'll have to look into Pankration some more tomorrow, looks as if that would be a better way to go.
