I've had a problem for years sleeping. I've never come to a solution for the problem. I've literally tried everything... Ambien, Xanax, Valium, Alcohol, Marijuana... I've literally tried everything and I sit here... awake again... going crazy for another night. Honestly, I don't know why I have this problem. Maybe I think too much or maybe it is a medical problem. I honestly am just lost. I've seen countless doctors and I have no solution.
I would have created a poll to ask you guys what works but if I could name it I would have tried it. Does anybody have any help for me. Please, I am seriously sick of this.

Gonna have to agree with this primarily, and when you mean you're seeing doctors, which kind? There are specialists, ever thought about doing a sleep study?

Have you tried excersize...... that tends to work ;)
While on topic, everyone has a 'sleeping position', and mine is on my right shoulder/side. For the past 2 months or so, my right shoulder has been messed up. I'm quite sure it's my sleeping habbits, but it's so uncomfortable to sleep on my other side/back that I can't fall asleep. So, any advice for that?
Try not drinking things with caffiene or gauranna (sp?)

If you are a coffee drinker, cut the coffee out. (adrenal fatigue)
If there is some deep issue your dealing with you must come to terms with it.
Sleep hygene and patterns are a plus.
Computer use before bed or extended computer use may (probably not) be a contributing factor.
alcohol or (self pleasuring ) will not realy work with a problem like this.
I had gone through the same thing 5 years ago i couldn't sleep (but cold sweats and feeling like the room wasn't hot enough) plus constant uncomfortableness....i unfortunatly had to SPARTAN through the episode (lasted a good 4 years.) doctors couldn't help despite blood tests, they saw nothing wrong with me.
but as for you maybe get a blood test.... and hope you do find a solution.

Well, I mean you have your simple Tylenol PM and all of that what not but by the sounds of it apperently that won't work. This will sound pretty dumb but have you ever took up meditation? I did it for awhile and my body was relaxed I felt great. I am not gonna lie, I have to take it up again because of stress and all of that what not but it helps. Also, hot tubs. Your body may not feel comfortable and may be irrtated, the heat will relax your muscles and regulate your heartbeat really, steady pass. All of those things can make your heartrate different from a sleeping rate which is needed.
Meditation and hot tubs. It works for me. try it out bud.

Basically you have to force yourself yo get into a good sleeping pattern. In other words, go to sleep the same time every day for a couple weeks. Staying up different times each night combined with a bit of stress adds to insomnia. Used to be me. I'd sleep only 2 or 3 hours a day because I couldn't sleep. That or google some non-drug related solutions.

Get into a pattern like a few people have said and exercise more. Exercise especially helps me when insomnia gets to me because I am a night owl, but my professors are all morning people... weirdos.

That is hard for me though. I never know when I am going to bed. I'm 20 years old, I go to school, work, parties, and finally I sleep. Those things combined don't let me schedule when I sleep very well. Any other ideas?

I used to hate trying to fall asleep at night. Then I started working third shift. Go to work at 10pm, come home and go to bed by 7am. Awesome. Never had a problem falling asleep. :)
But since that's probably not an option, have you tried white noise? It's supposed to help. I've tried using radio static as well as TV static. It seemed to help me fall asleep, but I personally didn't like the noise too much, if that makes sense. There are other types of "white noise" that might be better to listen to though, just google around a bit.
Also, just noise in general helps me. I like to fall asleep with the TV on sometimes, but with the volume really low so I wouldn't get distracted by it, yet still loud enough that I'd hear something. The flashing lights from the TV seem to help me sleep for some reason.
Lastly, maybe some music? I like playing drone, but sometimes even that distracts me a bit because it's stuff I listen to and enjoy regularly. But if you're not used to listening to drone, it probably won't seem distracting and might help. I'd recommend Nadja, and the album Desire In Uneasiness. ;)

What I am about to say has nothing to do with being negative towards you, but a fine solution may be you need to get laid. It's a 50/50 shot on working, but if it does it's a win win situation for you.
The white noise and music usually work as well like Tama said.

Patient: "doctor! doctor! no matter what I do I still feel sick!"
Doctor: "well, have you been taking the medication and following the advice I gave you for it?"
Patient: "no I don't have time for that stuff"
Doctor: ".. ...."
You're a car guy, right dirka? You take the time to gas up your car, maintain it with whatever work needs to be put into it to keep it running (smoothly). Your body is a machine, and it similarly needs work. Healthy lifestyles are not passively acquired, but demand good balanced nutrition, exercise, and sleep habits. It takes (minor) sacrifice, just like everything else in life. If you want it, you need to put the time and effort into it.
Also, it's not just about sleeping the same time every night. No food or TV (or computer or anything else with brighter lights) 30 minutes before sleep. Do not do anything else in bed, such as reading, before you sleep - ensure you are only in bed to sleep. If you can't sleep, don't lay in bed (staring at the clock). It's actually better to get up, do some light reading or something simple (again, no food or TV), and then try again when you feel you are getting sleepy.
You're looking for a chemical method to compensate for the natural programming of your body you refuse to allow. I have to tell you outright, as great as science and medicine is, you can't beat the real thing.

hey, theres a few things you could try.
i suffer from insomnia also, and im on medication for it, which works most of the time. i take trazidone, three a night. ambien is bullshit, i could have told that that doesnt do anything.
you might want to retalk to your doctor, and maybe go see a pyschiatrist (no not to talk to). sometimes, the nerves and what not in your head wont let you sleep, and depression and what not, if anythings bothering you, it makes it hard to sleep. some anti depressants have strong sleeping side affects. i used to take some at night, and it made it a little easier to fall asleep.

well see, i started out at one, didnt work, then went to two, didnt work, then they said to go up to three. they are 50 mg, its just because of my health problems, it takes more to knock me out, haha
the recommended dosage for adults is three, thats what the bottle says, but of course i started out lower and worked my way up.
i always have to be careful about medication doses cause i take numerous medications and have to be careful about what reactions they could have with one another

I used to have insomnia, which sucks. When you have insomnia, you're never really asleep and you're never really awake. Everything is far away, everything is a copy of a copy. Then I started going to some support groups. Babys don't sleep this good.
Now I'm spending a lot of time with my friend Tyler, I think it will be good for me.

I have had insomnia for the last 15 years or so........
When I go to bed, it always takes me a couple of hours to fall asleep. And even then I am awake several times a night.....
My pattern now is go to bed ~11pm. Go to sleep ~2-3am. Wake up at 7am. Every once in a great while I can get to sleep before midnight. But thats rare.
Interestingly enough, when I was working nights, I found I can sleep better during the day. I am a naturally "nocturnal" person. So I get better sleep if I have a daytime sleeping schedule.
There are several studies that have linked those with insomnia to having a nocturnal leaning.
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/134115/the_truth_about_nocturnal_people.html
Basically, you have insomnia because you are trying to force your body to have a sleep schedule that it does not like.
Shroomy. It's also been shown in studies that TOO much sleep is bad for you s well. You almost seem less rested because your body "winds down" and loses energy, making you moe tired than when you started.

I haven't gotten more than 3 consecutive hours of sleep in months. I'm on anti-depressants, which make me drowsy all day long, but I can't actually fall asleep. When I do sleep, it's very light, and I wake up frequently, often following very strange, disturbing dreams. I miss actually sleeping through the night ... or even half the night.
