So I've seen that a real lot of you dudes are very much so into cars. Fast cars with sleek paint jobs and tricked out engines. Big rims, special tires, and expensive sound systems.
That's all well and dandy, but I'm kind of curious: does anyone else here love driving shit box cars?
I am ALL ABOUT paying three hundred bucks for a car at a local gas station and running it into the ground until I need a new one. Hell, I used to take my '93 Chevy Lumina four wheeling in the dump. (which in itself is quite the enigma, seeing as it only had rear wheel drive) The e-brake fell out while I was on the highway, and I just kept driving it until it would drive no longer.
So my philosophy has always been that I'd much rather keep it interesting with a junk heap. Shit box cars make you live dangerously, you just never know what to expect. They always keep you guessing!
Anyone else? And let's see some junker cars you guys have. I know all you kids have digital cameras.

Haha funny story.
Last week when it was nice and wasn't snowing we bought an old 88 Geo. Took it jumping. Yeah. We shot the raditator right away, fluid leaking everywhere then we took it through the mud. I don't know how we did it bought didn't get stuck. It was a cute little 3 banger, 5 speed. We some how managed to blow 3,4,5 gears. Only had first and second. I think that was just a bad tranny though. Also, the car only cost us a whole 200 bucks from a junkyard.

My first car was a 1976 V-6 buick skylark that I bought for under $300 from a guy down the street. It was 4 shades of green.
The Skylark we called it, original right?
I painted the "rims" gold, painted the outsides of the headlights bright orange, and spray painted my name on the top in white. We hit shopping carts with it all the time in the toys-r-us parking lot in town.
Then... one day... I was driving to a softball game for some reason... and the wheel fell off.
Yeah, it just fell off, I saw it in the rear view mirror as my car veered into oncoming traffic. Luckily i was able to steer the beast into the ditch on my side of the road and waited for my dad to come get me. Turns out the axle broke and then some other things broke and then no wheel.
I loved that car.
Now i have a 03 PT Cruiser I've had since i graduated high school that I love. I own it and it's been great to me, still in great condition. Always wanted one and I still enjoy it to this day. It's a black chrome edition cruiser :cool2:.

Naw, I used my moms Toyota Echo for the first 2-3 years cause she worked at home and didn't need it often. But when I started working nights, it wouldn't have worked out so I went out and bought a nice, almost new '07 Scion. I guess I'm just boring then, but I like having a reliable car to drive to my gigs. :) And I'm hoping to keep my Scion until it becomes a "shit box." Heh.

Actually if you do that your entire life you will most definitely retire a rich man...
My first car was a truck and it came with conditions....It was a 64' Chevy Truck, Three speed in the column. The condition was that I had to haul off the trash every week. Dad even got it painted for me a nice color of blue and I shelled out some cash for a nice radio (cassette)....which I might add was hell installing since the entire dash board was made from metal that seemed more like armor from a tank since it was such a bitch to cut.
I stuck with it until I found a job and bought my own car.

I love junkers. Hell, do it right and you don't even need plates, just throw a 30 day temp tag on it........
1974 Chevy Impala $80
1979 Ford Granada $250 (from a dealer)
1984 Dodge Colt $300
1978 Postal Jeep $275
1985 Honda Accord $100 (bad clutch)
1988 Ford Escort $200 (at auction)
1989 Ford Tempo (traded it for Escort that had blown head, plus $150 to me)
1982 Ford Ranger PU $300
The Tempo had 275,000 miles when I sold it. The Ranger I sold to my brother for $100. The rest were literally driven to death. Usually with 1 year or more of service before death.

That's why shit box cars are the best. When you see everything going on it one by one, you don't have a care in the world about it. You can just keep driving it until the thing's in flames on the side of the road.
It's a one time, low priced investment. You never need to pour money into them, or even worry about pouring money into them.

Back in high school, I had an old Lumina, and my best buddy Dave had an equally old Ford Escort. His car broke down one day in the school parking lot, so he called me and asked me for a jump. I drove to where he was and we hooked our batteries up.
His car started right up, but then mine wouldn't turn on. I turned to him and went "what the hell? Give it back."
We then hooked our cars back up, and he this time gave ME a jump. His car immediately died and would not start up again, while mine started up just fine.

My daily is a 91 Nissan Sentra SE-R. I get can get a pic in the sun tomorrow. Craigslist pick up for $1100. Salvage title, totaled out after a relatively minor impact on the passenger wheel well. Some body damage on that side but not much. Hood doesn't fit quite right. Wicked dash curl. Few bits of trim missing. Sun roof doesn't work. Dings and scratches galore.
But it runs like a mother and is nimble enough to make it stupid fun to drive. Bought a cheapie set of 15 inch Rotas for it and mounted some good tires, it sticks like it's rolling on fly paper. Have yet to have any major problems with it, except for the alternator dying but that's an easy fix. Looking forward to autocrossing it this summer.

Note: None of these pictures are my actual vehicles, but . . . you get the idea.
First car:
http://www.zenwise.com/1971-Ford-Pinto-at-Westerner-web500.jpg
1971 Ford Pinto. Yellow. Completely awesome car. There was so much rust on this death trap that I could look through the driver's side door and see the road while I was driving. Also, as the speakers were crap, I got a giant wooden boxed church speaker and wired it to the stereo. If I folded the back seat down and positioned it between the driver's and passenger's seat, I could get the approximation of loud music out of my $20 stereo. And you know - I kind of miss it.
Car I had for most of high school:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5c/SV-Drivers.jpg.jpg/250px-SV-Drivers.jpg.jpg
1978 Dodge Ram Van. Mine was red, though. It had a homemade bed in the back (lost my virginity there) and you could stuff it full of kids to drive to a party. Pretty sweet.
Current car:
https://ftcollins.ppgmti.com/IMAGES/3655_1.JPG?t=tr/m:FitPad/d:Shrink/w:100/h:75/b:DDDDDD
I'm not sure if my Volvo counts, as it still runs and is in generally decent shape. However, it does have about a quarter million miles on it. I'll probably get a new car when it dies (maybe an all electric?) but it just keeps going . . . and going . . . and going.
I have kind of a thing about keeping a car until it absolutely dies. They say that if you keep each car for 10 years (versus buying every two years), you save over $400,000 in your lifetime. (And this was calculated when cars were cheaper.) Plus, I honestly don't care at all for luxury or looks if a car gets me where I want to go. There's plenty of other stuff that I'd rather do with my money.

I'm somewhat of a shitbox convert, I guess you could say. Just with SUVs rather than cars.
My first car was this:
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1440/3341/3599170001_medium.jpg
A 1998 Chevy Blazer. It was what you'd consider a nice car (I absolutely loved it, of course), and I kept it in immaculate condition. It was stolen from out of my driveway a few years ago, and it hurt like hell losing that Blazer. Also for the fact that I had to borrow my sister's '01 Saturn SC1 (basically the prototypical "cool" car, only plastic and not cool at all...tinted windows, stereo and rims aside) until I could find a vehicle for myself.
Then I got my current vehicle:
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4039/2101/22596050004_medium.jpg
A 1993 Chevrolet Suburban. It came with 187,000 miles on the odo, and I've got it running right now at 248,000+, so it's done a few laps since I bought it. Now, it's still in decent condition, but it's at that age where things aren't quite right anymore (hell, I've been driving with a broken seat [if I didn't have the middle row seats down, providing a back rest, the seat literally rocks like an old rocking chair], the seat belt on the passenger front seat doesn't work properly, there's a massive chip in the windshield from where a lose tire clipped it, the rear windows don't function properly, the doors don't lock properly and one day I needed to get to the ER because I was having some pretty serious pain [which turned out to be a pretty big kidney problem requiring surgery, etc], and I couldn't drive myself, so I called my dad to give me a ride...we decided to take the Suburban and the genius rear-ends someone on the way to the ER...{a pic: here (http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4039/2101/22596050007_medium.jpg)}]. So...it's been in a bit of a sorry state for a while now [did spend some time rebuilding the front end, somewhat (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2259605/3), but it's basically in the same state...].
Not quite the stereotypical shitbox car, I know, but it's getting there. It's also extremely fun taking it off the beaten track...
I do have ambitions to buy another Suburban when this one dies (probably same age, I love the '90s model better than any other), but it's still going, so I'm still driving it :)
-PG
you guys seriously drive some real "nice" cars...
I suggest archilles that you go for a new or a 07+ year japanese make car. They are the most reliable/fuel efficient. They can be from 8k-15k canadian so roughly 5k-12k u.s. and they can last you a while. Plus with the current gas prices they can save you a bundle too.
I suggest you look into
Honda Civic
Toyota Camry
Toyota Carolla
Subaru Impreza
Mazda 3
any of those will do

I have not yet owned a car. I have thought about getting an old junker till I get a car, but my sister went off to college so I get to drive her 2005 Mazda 3 around. I think i'll be getting a 10 Toyota Corolla S series soon with the bose stereo system. I plan on maybe getting tinted windows, blue or green. I would like to buy the Neon lights for it but the cops would bust you for them because there is not much crime around where I live and have nothing better to do. I also plan on taking my dads 2 15's Boston Acoustic subs since he rarely uses them (there just sitting in my garage gathering dust right now) and getting a 4 or 5k watt amp. Haven't decided on what kind.

1996 Toyota Hilux, nothing can destroy this car, ever. Has 260k on the odo, and it has only not worked on me once.
Best car to have around here, as there is an abundance of parts. I laugh at my friends with their import Imprezas who have to pay a fair amount of money for parts. Me, I just go to the mechanic, pay the $10 and drive off.

Heh, I caught the majority of it. I know a decent bit about car stereo equipment, I threw small systems into both my wife's and my car (JL 13W7's / JL 1000/1). Now if you start going into the finer details/specs of the crap, then that'll be *WOOSH!* right over my head.
The main thing that flagged his post to me was the fact he's never owned a car, but for his first car he's not only going to go out and drop about 20 grand (Corolla's start at like 15.5, just figure basic options and sales tax will bring him up around 20) and then go out and throw some ricer tint/neons on the car, aswell as put a system in it right away? I'm calling bullshit.

Not when you're parents freak out and tell you how the subs destroy batteries and pretty much force you to get one if you would ever wanna purchase subs.

You can't just "go get" a second alternator. It is a very expensive process, that requires mounting extra brackets, redoing the entire belt/pulleys system as well as adding additional wiring to the car itself.
And some kid isnl;t going to run out and do it with mommies stationwagon.
Kid, every time you post you show you know less than before.

Haha well I'd rather show less than gain weight and become farther and farther from girls like you do. But my dad had his entire car wired and crap with the second altenator. I know its very complex, thats why I can't even take my dad's 5k Boston Acoustic amp because its wired to the entire car and would pretty much have to take the entire car apart. I know its complex, but my parents say how the subs ate and destroyed the battery in their Chevy Suburban (again, sorry if the spelling is wrong), and would force me to go through the hassle of getting an altenator and that whole process. Heck my friend offered me a 4k Kicker amp for 100 bucks only and I couldn't buy it because my parents want the car to be safe first before putting subs and amps in.

OF COURSE your dad just happens to have wired his car with a second "altenator". It would be onconvenient for your bullshitting if he didn;t.
While your at it, just pretend his car is a corvette, and he lets you drive it all the time. Maybe the e-penis boost will be good for your self-esteem.

Haha, I didn't think an older man would flip out over a little comment over the internet but whatever. And you don't believe which I find even more funny. The Suburban is a 2001 Red Chevy with leather interior and fog lights on the front. He has the Boston Acoustic amp and 15" subs. He has the alpine speakers and the pioneer Deck. Haha, I think its more funny how you don't think we own those. 1. We live in a small neighborhood and housing is almost twice if not 3 times cheap to a bigger city. 2. I don't know if your ignorant or just jealous, but I do own those cars. Be pretty hard to describe a car perfectly like that. Want me to tell you something about the car I will. Heck I will list off the other car we own, My dad generally drives his Suburban to work and my mom drives her rx330 Lexus. This one is silver, 2006 is when we got this. This one has no special stereo other than something we got with the car. Personally I do not like driving this car because being 6'7, it does not give you much leg space. Do a hard brake and its hurting the knees.
And no, my dad does not work the CIA or anything like that.

This may be a stupid question.. (but hey at least I don't pretend to know) what's the purpose of a second alternator?
I have my system (2 15's, 2 amps [1 800 watts to push the "highs" and 1 2800 watts (i think) to push th subs]), neon underlights, and my alarm all hooked up to my battery that came with my car. (had slight erosion(?) but cleaned it off and had it for over a year. Never had a problem with it..

Alternators recharge your battery when the car is running. That isn't their only job but it is one of them.
Unless it is their only job, in which case, they only recharge your battery.

The problem comes down to "peak" usage of the power. Constant spikes and drains can be bad for a battery. It also wears out your alternator faster.
If you have something that is going to draw a MASSIVE amount of power, a second alternator and additional batteries can help keep things goi9ng.
Ever notice your lights dim or flicker when big bass hits? A better power system prevents this.
Problem here is kids see something about that on some show or site, and start bragging it up. It's always amazing how it is their friends/brother/cousin/dad/gay-life-partner who magically happens to have run it, and always for a system that wouldn;t even require it.
It's like the idiot a couple of weeks ago who posted a pic of his pimped out red car. And the oic simply tracked back to a website where someone had posted pics of their car.
Chop here thinks it's hard to say a car gas a red interior, and it must be proof "he owns them".
Chop, I own a Red Chevy Crew cab pickup, with a maroon interior, push button 4 wheel drive. It has a black bed liner, and is rigged with wiggle-waggles and a dashmounted R/B flasher.

Take your car to an Autozone, and ask them to put a battery tester on it. This will see if the load is right, and if there is any unusual draws on it. A weak battery/alternator can cause lights to flicker and drain whenever something else uses power.
If the flicker is more when you hit a bump and such when driving, then you probably have a loose connection somewhere.

One question, how much money have you spent into these cars? Maybe some gas otherwise that's about it. They're not your cars, they're your parents. You don't appreciate something until you use your own money. You learn responsibility and take care of it more, it's called appreciation. Something you obviously don't have an ounce of.

When someone says something completely retarded, yes, i call them out on it. Especially when its someone like Chop, who hears about something cool, and starts bragging about having it themselves.
When they talk about it, and it's obvious they have no idea what they are actually talking about, it;s easy to call them out on it even. And then it's just AMAZING how every single time it is a friends/brother/cousin/dad/gay-life-partner who has it.

It really doesn;t matter. The entire issue was his bragging up the stereo and then dropping in the info about running a second alternator. THAT is what I am calling him out on. But his 'proof' for the double alternator he has is magically in a vehicle thats not around.
He read on some site about a guy who installed a secondary power system for his stereo, and decided he'd be cool to have one too. Except by the way he talked abiout it, it was obvious he's never even seen one, let alone had it in the magically disappearing truck.

Dude your an idiot. I was talking about how I was getting a car with a bose system and possibly taking my dads subs. Than I said I was gonna get a 4-5k watt amp but didn't know what kind. Than someone said get a truck battery. And Than I said how much does that cost and I said some buddies of mine installed and wired up altenators. And you flipped and tried to sound smart over the internet giving some technical term. If your lights dim, altenators charge your battery when driving and gives it more life which was exactly what I was talking about trying to do when I get my car and if I can fit my dads 15's in my car. But you had to be an idiot and sound cocky.

I looked around. And it seems the flickering and lights dimming whenever the AC and such kicks in is considered "normal" in the 08 model. A LOT of people have filed complaints. You can if you want too:
http://automobiles.honda.com/information/customer-relations.aspx
Somebody figured out a fix for it. The reprogrammed the ECU basically. Definitely not something just anyone can do though.
From the looks of it, it is a matter of how the computer routes the power.

No you don't. Blood, sweat, and tears don't just come from working on the car yourself, it comes from working to PAY for the car. I've paid for everything from my first car (1996 Probe GT) to any of my current cars/trucks/motorcycles. Although my wife doesn't beat her car, you can see she doesn't keep it clean, probably since she has no idea what the monthly payments are for it.

No, it's not about how much you pay on your credit card, it's your balances and making timely payments. Your overall debt to available credit ratio is what's important. Once that hits 50% your credit score will start being negatively effected... the higher the percentage goes the worse the impact.

You don;t. Your mommy and daddy have a couple of cars. Not a single one has pro-series speakers with a dual alternator system.

Pretend all you want, but I am not the only one who saw through your lies when you told them. I really do wish you had good friends in real life, but unfortunately your entire history on the game has shown otherwise. You are a pretty classic case study into a lonely kid who goes to the internet to try and get the respect he doesn;t get in the real world....

Haha you're still going on about the altenator. Why is it hard to believe that my dad has a car with sub's, boston acoustic subs, alpine speakers, a pioneer deck and an altenator. I honestly don't why you can't believe that. I never said I had one, I said it was my dad and I were to get subs, that would be an option for me. We honestly didn't even install the amp and altenator, when purchasing the speakers and everything, we had the people at the place install everything that was purchased so it would give the crisp and clean hear, rather than us hacking at it and blowing some speaker or sub.

Why is it so hard to believe?
Because no one in the3 entire united states installs a secondary alternator into a Suburban to run an average stereo with a mid-amp. There is absolutely no reason to do it, and no one would recommend it.
You read about secondary alternators on some car stereo website, and decided you'd be e-cool if you could claim to have it. But, from the way you posted about it, it was obvious you had NO idea what the hell you were talking about, or how it would even work.
So please, go running to a website about pro-series stereo systems, then come back and pretend you understand what they are talking about with a dedicated power system.
Your e-penis isn;t going to be bigger, no matter how much you bullshit.

Yeah, but how much was the first guitar, I'm guessing it was a squire or fernandez so around 1-200 bucks. Not bad to pay off. Next few were probably nicer, around 1-1.5k. If you know where a high school kid can get around 19k while working in the summer 20 hours a week, let me know.

A 5k amp is now considered mid? Man that amp was around 1k as it is. I don't consider that mid. And yes you do get a second altenator when the suburban you previously owned had car battery issues due to the face the stereo/subs would take so much juice. The car battery in our old suburban, 94 Chevy lasted a year or less. Thats not very long for a suburban battery. I didn't pay for this and it isn't even mine. I think it's funny how you don't believe the fact that my dad paid for the an altenator for the car so he would prevent this same hardship.

Only reason I know get that music is what I know from music. I need to know how to play more then one insturment (Guitar, Cello, Bass, some piano. I can play a banjo) I have to know things about pedals such as Distortion, Overdrive, Synthsizer, Flanger, Chrous Delay, Wah Pedals, all of that. What it does to your frequency and what not. Basically be prepared to answer any question somebody has about an insturment. Also know how to Guitar Eletronics, weather it's throwing in active pickups or to resaudering wires and what not. You have know how to read a wiring diagram basically. Isn't the easiest thing in the world.

It would probably be dumb to waste the money on interest taking out a loan yourself, yes. But why not atleast pay back the bottom line price pre-interest to your parents... You're the kind of person that takes your parents for granted and honestly, I hope to god they recognize that and cut you off, leaving you flat on your ass making 7.50 an hour. You want to make $15/hour, come down to PA I'll put you to work for a week and see if your pansy ass can cut it for even a single week. Depending on how you drive the car/maintain it, it could run reliably for 2 years or 20. Don't assume it's 10+. Hell I bought a brand new truck last year, was stupid and was towing well over twice the max weight, and destroyed the truck... Shit happens, and guess what, stupid mistakes/beating on a car will void the warranty.
Your parents aren't helping you out, they're giving you a handout... a horrible idea on their part. By the time a kid is allowed to drive, he needs to be responsible enough with/and value the car he's driving so you don't end up like I Mafia I.

One, Tube is a thousand times better then an amp volume and sound wise. You don't need that much power unless your trying to wake up the state. Two, If I were going to get a tube I'd get a Fender Tube. Best Tube amp in the world. I have a Fender Cybertwin sitting downstairs which is pretty nice but it still sounds processed even though it's a tube. I just want an oldie but goodie'. Something that sounds pure.
Wizzy, the reason I missed words. When I type, I think of the words first and sometimes my finger don't react to what I'm thinking and I just leave some things out. It's a problem to say the least but I'm slowly fixing it. Also, I was going off of 2 hours of sleep, School (Maxing in Weightlifting) and all of the other things. I worked hard all last summer. I worked for a moving company, made 8.75 an hour busting my butt for 30-40 hours a week. That's a lot of work for a kid who works out in the morning than goes to work, especially in high school. The labor work I was doing was worth well more than 8.75. I threw my back out a few times, pulled muscles, heck I have a torn labreium in my shoulder right now( that due to football though.) You want hard work, do that, in the sun for 7 or more hours a day working with 40 year old drunks that have no teeth and have had their licenses taken away and force you to do all the work because there to retarded and lazy to do any of it. No, it's not about how much you pay on your credit card, it's your balances and making timely payments. Your overall debt to available credit ratio is what's important. Once that hits 50% your credit score will start being negatively effected... the higher the percentage goes the worse the impact.
Ahhh thank you sir! I always make my payment on time ! :)
