ATTN: Rep Boosters

It's no longer tolerated on this site. Though many of us agree rep is frivolous, it is still a form of boosting that we do not want to promote.

Now that the newest version of vbulletin is released, we also have the ability to track Rep boosters much easier. Obviously, the line for rep boosting, just like stat boosting, can be somewhat blurry--but people who do it in excess are easily caught (like: finding reps between the same group of 7 people three times a page).

So, basically, rep boost at your own risk. Known accounts that were involved in the boosting have been reset to zero. If it continues, you risk banning. Accounts that are never used and obviously used for boosting purposes only have been banned. If your account was hijacked for boosting purposes, or your account has been banned and you wish it to reopen with the promise of not abusing the reputation system, you may contact me.

This "rep group" is huge, and I've had enough of it. People on severe watch run the risk of getting reset at any time if it is abused any more. If you are on watch but have not done anything wrong, don't worry: you won't get banned unless wrong behavior starts to be recorded. Watch is simply a list for me to keep track of. If you do have affiliations with this "rep group," even if you are not listed, I would recommend breaking those ties. I will be tracking these DAILY.

Please don't abuse the systems that we implemented for use in good spirits. We will track you.

Resetting repas a whole is actually NOT a default option in vBulletin forums....

There is a way to do it, but it requires running SQL queries and modifying the database, then restoring rep to default settings. And it can royally screw upa forums if not done right.

If they want to be silly and exploit a meaningless reputation system, I don't see why you should have to spend your more valuable time policing them. MySQL is a computer language for the near illiterate. The database aspects of internet forums could be altered with comfort by anyone who had access and had taken a semester or two of C or C++. I don't think the technical aspects are as much a problem as solving the root issue. I think some of the former mods were also competent in this type of stuff.

A lot of talk of removing rep in its entirety, but I'd argue that neg rep has a purpose while pos rep serves only to grant neg rep power. For instance, if someone consistently posts inappropriate things, they deserve to have privileges limited or their influence reduced. The system functions on the premise that the person who is most respected, and most repped can see this inappropriate posting, recognize it, and act accordingly. However, I really don't think the TAO community has the maturity to decide that, even among the very highly reputed players. Popularity shouldn't decide anything.

An issue system would be more fitting. If someone posts something offensive to you, file an issue on the post or thread. If a number of issue accumulate and a mod isn't actively checking the post/thread, he/she notices it and checks. If the post is indeed inappropriate, the poster is affected by reduced privileges, say, blocked from creating threads for a week or prevented from the actual forums, but given access to vm's and pm's.

If the issues are being filed over stupid things, as they often are, a mod would read right through it and either ignore them or punish the one issuing for spurious attempts to disrupt others.

Would definitely allow for easier moderation, a means by which forum participation and selection for new forum moderators could be evaluated, and lastly, would be far harder to abuse within the player-base.

The entire concept of negging 'stupid' posts and repping 'clever' ones is misguided. In the 'real world' you don't walk up to the idiot trying to perform on the subway and making a fool of himself to disrespect him; you walk past and ignore him. Therefore, I don't think the idea of popularity-based rep should exist.

Mods have zero access to the database. Even an Admin can only have control panel access to the vBull forums if their name is added to the access list in the config files.

What you are referring to is call an "infraction system", such as Legends Forums has. That is a Mod that can be added to the forums. HOWEVER, Serg and Bills have made it clear that no customization of the forums will occur.

Also, for whatever reason, the "Report Post" feature was disabled. Never sure why that was.

Any changes to the forum have to be functions available in the core system.

People complain when people boost stats in-game. This is a forum, monitored by the same moderators who monitor you in-game. If they kicked a booster there, no complaints would be had about them "not focusing on the primary issues." The only difference is this hasn't happened before (them taking action against rep-boosting), and you want to find some new mod decision to complain about.

You're just annoying some, having the rest laugh at you, and causing the forum drama that you agreed shouldn't have happened...Stop, please. I already have a headache.
