View Full Version : So I Was Thinking

Shocker, isn't it?

I was talking with my friend the other day, he is a musician. I was explaining to him why I thought the RIAA was bad for musicians. So he asked me, what did I think would be a better idea. I thought about, and thought of this idea.

There exists some website, where for a small fee, an artist can put up music onto the website, and charge whatever price they want to, and people can buy that music. The artist gets all the profits minus server running costs, or whatever costs(I don't know all about what it costs to make a website). So the website gets a small monthly membership fee, I dunno exactly what.

But the benefits of this system, allow the artist to charge whatever they feel is reasonable. Allows more profit for the artist rather than record label, causing cheaper prices.

I was wondering about how practical is, both from the musicians point of view and a business stand point for the website. I don't really know what the costs for a website like this would be, etc. Just throwing this idea outthere.

I really don't know anything about this subject, but I'll put in my two cents. I think it's a good idea if he actually goes out and plays for people in concerts, on the streets, etc. He could advertise to look for his music on the site, if he doesn't do that, waste of money unless he's already well known.

No, I wasn't talking about just him. A website for ANY musician that would want this service. I was wondering about the practicalities of running this service.

It would work I think. I know plenty of local musicians here in Austin who aren't signed that would do this.

If youre selling music for more expensive prices than you coulld get anywhere else, you won't get any money unless you obtain a monopoly.

You'd still have to skim money off the top of the band prices to afford bandwidth, etc.

Soundclick is something like this. You can put your songs up there for free for listen and download or you can charge to download the mp3. I don't know the different levels to buy the mp3, but the cheapest for the consumer is $.72, $.53 goes to the artist.

Yah, that is what I was asking about. How much IS the bandwidth cost for something like this? Would it be something like 1 cent per song download? More? Less?

GG sir.

I voluntarily asked for the opinions of an online forum to take into consideration. And got very helpful responses to my question.

Isn't that the whole purpose of a forum?

I'll just keep in mind for the future never to joke with you cuz your feelings are too fragile :(

I honestly have no idea what RIAA is, but I'm not much for the whole day. The music can be great, but unknown. Which could cause somebody to actually steal your music, and most people don't know anything about pirating laws anymore.

No. Usually you pay for a certain amount of usage per month. You go over that and your website goes down till next month, but in this situation, you would probably have dedicated servers and some tech guys keeping it running.
