Okay. So, I'm sick of living in Northern Virginia. It sucks here. The cost of living is too high, the people are the scum of the earth, and the traffic here is literally the third worst in the entire country. Honestly, rush hour headed away from D.C. starts at about 3 PM on a Monday and about noon on a Friday. I can't take it anymore.

So we're thinking about just packing our bags and getting tfo. Our oddly picked ideal location is Washington state. I know a bunch of you guys are from the Pacific Northwest and I was wondering if you could give me any information/advice about moving there. Like, will we be able to get a job there? (We both have about 2yrs experience as asst. managers of retail shoe stores, no joke...)

What's the cost of living like?

Also, I know the rain is bad, but it seems like temperature-wise the weather would be much better than here. Lower high temps in the summer; higher low temps in the winter. Is this true?

Lastly, is it as awesome as we decided it is? Are the people nicer up there 3,000 miles away from the hell-hole we call the capital of this country?

Low cost of living. Lower pay..equal to that of cost of living up north.
Hott all year round. (sometimes gets to 30s in winter)
In the summer you have high chance of atleast seeing one hurricane!
We have disney world.
ummm..and most importantly we have hulky?

Um, no thanks to California. It's hot there, I don't like hot. If it's too hot for me in VA it's way too hot in CA I'm sure. Also, the cost of living is even worse in CA if I'm not mistaken. And to FL, no thanks for most of the same reasons.

I thought VA had a cheap cost of living? Er, that's what I was told. Then again, his idea of "cost of living" was probably just based on the fact that cigarettes are cheaper in VA than here in PA.

Anyway, if I went west, I'd shoot for Colorado. Good skiing.

You'll love it in Washington, Serg. It's a great place to live.
Beautiful state with lots to do, and Seattle is a terrific city. As far as getting jobs, reports show that western Washington has actually done pretty well compared to most states in the struggling economy. I don't know.
We don't get tornadoes or hurricanes or 4 feet of snow. We don't have unbearable heatwaves or 115 degree summers or humidity that makes you feel like you're always in a sauna. It never gets too hot or too cold, and the summers are really nice, though short.
But it does rain a lot.
A lot. Like 8 months out of the year.
They don't call it The Evergreen State for nothing.
You'll get used to it. Everyone does, except the people who kill themselves.

This. I know Virginia isn't like...Georgia or anything. But we could put up a fight for being called the ball sweat state.

Thanks for the reassurance. We're most worried about the job market. It's just such a bad time to quit your job right now for people like us.

Northwest for the win!
Your best bet is to move to western/southern Washington or Portland, Oregon. The rest of Oregon's economy aside from Portland is in the can right now. Portland, however, is one of the best places to live in the world. It actually rains significantly less than Seattle (just 4 hours north).

The other bright side of Oregon is that our minimum wage is 8.40 right now and Washington's is 8.55. Oregon also has no sales tax (income tax is high, though--I'd rather have sales tax). A manager position makes about 10 bucks (which is what I'm making) an hour. Obviously, it's more expensive to live here than it is to live in the south or something, so we have a higher MW, but I doubt it's more expensive than living in DC.

Most of the people that I know who have moved to the Northwest (from anywhere from just south in California, to across the country in New Hampshire) have said it is the best place they have ever lived.

I love montreal. Great night life, culture and interresting people. The living cost really depends on your location but for like a 4 1/2 it could go around 500$.
M. wage: 9$
we also have to biggest underground mall in the world! aahhzza!

Uh, it means 4 rooms and a bathroom. So two bedrooms, kitchen, livingroom.
People usually refer to houses by the number of bedrooms/bathrooms. 2 bed 1 bath.

The house I am currently living in is being bought by a friend. He's paying $415 a month on land contract with a realtor, and it's a 3 bed, 1 1/2 bath, with Kitchen, Dining Room, Utility Roomand2living rooms. And we will be turning the carport into another bedroom and an office.
I actually live in the fully finished basement, which can be considered an efficiency apartment on it's own.

Why? No, I'm kidding. What do you do? If you're a big shot this area is actually pretty awesome. My brother in law makes big bucks as a programmer or something and he's got a sweet house in a nice neighborhood and he can bike to work. I, however, sell shoes.

Also, meat. $10 / hr is slightly less than what I make now, but it's a good chunk less than what my wife makes (that's right, she makes more than me). What's the cost of a decent apartment in Portland? Cause looking in Seattle they seem to be about the same as here.

You don't have to live in Seattle, Serg. There are plenty of affordable areas within commuting distance of the city.
But you don't have to live or work in Seattle. I live about 30 miles north of Seattle in Everett ( Boeing ) and commute South, like LOTS of people do. There are plenty of places to work and live in the Seattle area. Don't let housing prices in the actualy city scare you off.

For what it's worth there was a magazine article in the July 09 edition of Kiplingers that has a good article about places to live. One of the top priorites in picking the list were unemployment rate, income growth, cost of living index, median household income, and percentage of workforce in creative class.

Here is the top ten list:

1-Huntsville Alabama lowest cost of living index
2-Albuquerque, NM
3-Washington, DC - Kind of ironic considering you want to leave - Highest median household income on the list
4-Charlottesville, VA - lowest unemployment rate on the list
5-Athens, GA - highest income growth - lowest median household income on the list
6-Olympia, WA -highest cost of living index - a close second for the highest unemployment rate at 8.3% unemployed
7-Madison, WI
8-Austin, TX
9-Flagstaff, AZ
10-Raleigh, NC -lowest income growth - highest unemployment rate on the list

Living in Portland is cheaper than Seattle. Not by much, but by a little.
But, like Hugh said, if you go into the burbs instead of the downtown (lots of people live in Beaverton, Oregon or Tualatin, Oregon and commute to the city), it's pretty similar all across the northwest. A 2b1b apartment is quite economical. High end, nice apartments are maybe 750/m. 1b1b are as low as 600/m.
