"NEW ORLEANS – A white Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have."

That's what I call fighting the power.

Keep everyone down.

his argument that interracial offspring have hard lives and aren't accepted by their extended family is crap. obviously. but i also find it rather funny considering our effing president is interracial. yeah, it really didn't work out for him. he must have been un-loved.

Or he sincerely believe that he's helping people.

Why do you have to be so cynical? People make mistakes.

Biggest fail of the decade. Besides the flying UFO balloon over Denver.

hmmm.. good point. people do make mistake. like the other day when i punched an old lady for walking too slow. i just don't think old people should be allowed to walk in my way. it was a mistake. but it's okay, because people make them.

actually though, i think he does believe that he's doing the right thing. i'm curious what his black friends who he lets use his bathroom think about this whole thing.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they agree.

That's one thing that sitcoms have taught me.

And people say racism doesn't exist anymore.

Didn't you read? He's helping people.

Jeez.

First marriages in which the husband and wife are both members of the same race/ethnicity are more likely to succeed than those in which the spouses are of different race/ethnicity (table 21 and figure 25). After 10 years of marriage, interracial marriages have a 41-percent chance of disruption and same-race marriages have a 31-percent chance of disruption (table 21).

i'm kind of torn here. he doesn't really sound like a bigot; he isn't opposed to them getting married, just that he won't marry them. meh.

edit: i don't condemn interracial marriage by any means, but, at least statistically, his position has merit. ethically, i disagree.

Who the eff says that?

Also, I don't care. Kick him out of the court as he is unfit and that should be the end of it. This should not be an issue.

Using that same data, Minorities should not be allowed to marry anyone, as they have a higher chance of divorce than Whites.

In the end it doesn;t matter what numbers someone makes up. It should not be up to a justice of the peace to deny a license as long as the marriage is legal.

the idea of my post being that his justification of "interracial couples don't stay together as long", while true, does not suffice as legitimate rejection.

Obama's father left him and his mother when Barack was very young. It would be a stretch to say our president lived a normal life. He was very loved, but he had many identity crises and other issues.

and yet, ended up as president....thus nullifying the point the dude was trying to make for not marrying the two individuals in the first place.

In short, he should board the failboat. And then it should sink.

Let this be a shining example that all white people are irrevocably and incontrovertibly racist. ....

No, let it be an example that occasionally one stupid ass dude makes us all look bad.

Just like every now and then, someone of other "racial background" does something that makes their own "people" look bad.

I'm not really sure how this is even legal. Since when is it illegal to have an interracial marriage period? Gay marriage I know is an active debate, but interracial? That's old news.

Is it a stretch? lots of people i know had parents gone. But yes, that is true the marriage did end. However the offspring was fine. So concern for the offspring was misplaced in this case.

Now if he objected to marrying over-weight white people who live in trailers it'd be a totally different story. lol.

He isn't saying it is illegal, he said he just won't do it for them. They can go to another judge.
