The point is not whether I'm naive, or Chain's lying, or anything like that. It never matters how the perpetrators characterize the event, or even the mediators, only the victim. You see this in sexual harassment all the time: "it was just a joke", "they're blowing it out of proportion" -- all irrelevant. I think it's pretty clear Chain was upset enough by your actions that it's deemed trolling whether she's an online girlfriend, a dead girlfriend, an alive girlfriend, a real-life girlfriend, Megan Fox, or your grandmother. If it was something so unbelievably false to be upset over, perhaps circumstances would be different, but someone making fun of a sick girlfriend chain perceives real can, and was, severe trolling. It's irrelevant what we extrapolate from this facade, ie truth or falsity, but that it shouldn't factor in our decision. We should give people the benefit of the doubt before we don't. Chain: internet lying is a bad (more pitiful) thing. Indeed, if he is lying, he is in the wrong. However, I've yet to see how in any tangible way this perpetuates harm.

Celtic: trolling is a bad thing. This much more concretely is a force of bad than petty, far-fetched internet lies for reasons quite clear to me, at least. Flaming involves personal and harmful verbal attacks made out of enjoyment rather than concrete rational; lying for attention involves a pitiful kid making attempts in vain to get sympathetically noticed.

It's clear, at least to me, which behavior is easier to give the benefit of the doubt to.

Chain believeing in his online girlfriend "dieing" is funny.
Chain challenging somebody who disrespected her memory to a game of tao for his revenge is funny.

People's responses are funny.
People sticking up for chain and going all moral on everyone is funny.
People accusing each other left right and centre of trying to act tough and cool on the internet is funny.
15 year olds debating both what is morally wrong and when both are mrally wrong which is more morally wrong or morally wrong in a worse way is funny.


Anyone who tries to maintain this thing isn't funny does not have a leg to stand on. It's hilarious. I could agree that somebody saying his girlfriend deserves to die isn't funny but that's just because it was weak and a little uninventive. A good joke about it would still have been funny.

Wow... I just read all comments posted and I have to admit that i'm pretty surprised at some of the replies. Even if Chain is lying, it's still pathetic to mass troll him. If he lies about his gf dying on an online game, then he probably has a few problems and 20 people making fun of him on one thread probably isn't going to do wonders for chain's mentality. If he is telling the truth, then all who are making fun of him are terrible people. His gf dies, he feels lonely and sad, and a group of online asshole's decides the best way to spend their day is to make fun of this kid? What if he became suicidal?... What happened to common decency? You guys are jerks who need to find something better to do than make fun of chain.
