I know this is a somewhat revolutionary idea, but we need to breed a new generation to replace the lost one, and the way to do that isn't to alienate every new person who comes here. So when people make their first post on the Gen Disc forum, welcome them kindly.
Ignore stupid question posts, or just answer and move on. I'm not a hypocrite. I'm not going to attack in any way anyone with less than 200 posts any more unless they are already a respected member of the community. I have before but no more.

Good idea, either way most of the newbs who post here are the ones who are going to actually stick with the game, not the newbs who just sit in the lobby, spamming and stuff. So we should at least treat *most* of the people who post here with a little more respect (of course, some of the spammers do come onto the forums, so we have to flame them out of town).

See... I don't think I can quite do that... I mean... I've been nice to "n00bs"... as in... new people... but... I just can't stand stupid questions...
I'm not discriminating either... if an established member asked a stupid question... I'd probably flame them as well...
If a "n00b" presents himself in a way that is friendly, humorous, or in any way interesting, then I have no reason to flame them... perfect example: Sparks... he was new, and was accepted into the community immediately... hell, he was whoring with some of us within his first couple of days...

I've got nothing against noobs personally but it makes me mad when someone comes here to the forum and beings demanding things and using obscenities and double posting or starting another thread the same as the one they just made. That crosses the line of my "niceness" But that's just what I think. :)

I'm not down with this movement to codle noobs, tough love baby, that's the ticket. If they don't have thick skin, then they will never fit in anyways ;)

As a part of this community i feel it is necessary to bash on newbs or at least the really stupid opnes that ask questions like how do i make a free account or why are some of the names of people in the servers gold instead of grey  i mean come on people with questions like that what am i supposed to do just sit there

Its not all the way cuddeling n00bs and I suppose some of them call for it, I mean people like TheTruth just need this sort of though love, but we have been a bit harsh on them.

Some people know more about the functions of computers and the internet and how things work as opposed to people that are refered to as "newbs". Some people might be asking serious questions even though we think they are stupid. If they ask in a way that does not portray anger and hatred towards the community or demanding an answer then it should be answered in the same manner. But people who have no respect should not recieve any, that's my opinion on that matter.

I am with London on this one. Though love may hurt them, but it will always make them better in the end. I got by all the newb flaming simply by being funny. If someone else can do that too, while they will be accepted into the community no matter their post count :D.

You said

Clearly, this isn't true if you post semi-hostile replies to their question threads when they don't even know who you are to give you respect or contempt.

If you think lack of new people is a problem then you really haven't been on much...although you hardly seem to have "left" the forums. The thing is most new people will not become good, valued members. It just don't work like that, and if it did then we would have to have about 20 servers to hold them all. But out of the masses you can find maybe one or two that are interesting, funny, valued players (greensierra97 and Noodels most recently for SW).
xyxaxyz2
02-21-2004, 02:53 PM
I'm only talking about the forums. The game itself is prospering despite the loss of many from the first generation.
I agree that most people will not become valuable members- but we should try to increase the pool by not being hostile towards new members.
Omega_Paladin
02-21-2004, 02:58 PM
The forum is part of the game, the good posters are usually the good consistent players as well. And I prefer to weed out those who cause trouble. And really if you have half a brain you don't go into the general discussion and ask how you get a dragon. That is the type of people we flame. And even then, under those ridiculous circumstances, there is still a lot of people that answer their questions and try to nicely point out that they should surf the site a little and maybe they get an answer. Usually at this point the newbie begins to flame the guy trying to help.
xyxaxyz2
02-21-2004, 05:57 PM
It is exactly that kind of attitude that destroys good forums. And it is also untrue; Just because someone is asking how to get a dragon now doesn't mean in a couple of weeks they won't be using their dragon to become one of the best players on TAO.
Your second point is incorrect as well. There are noobish question threads that have pages of off-topic posts and no answers to the original question.

*observes Xy siting in his ultra-elite admin style knock-off throne, looking down upon TAO, proclaiming proclamations to grow a next generation super army of TAO players, one crafted in his own image and poised to take over the world of internet gaming*
Frankly if they like the game enough to be one of the best they will survive a little bashing. Perhaps these first experiences will give them pause and make them think about what they are asking first. "Oh but what if they leave instead!" Well then I guess they really didn't want to be here all that bad.
As for the answers...they are usually right there in either a help forum or the information that is right on the TAO website. Its not hidden, you have to look right at the bar to play or to post. Browse the site and you will find just about anything you need to know to play. If you can't find what you want to know in five minutes or less you should report to the genitalotomy center nearest you.

As I have stated multiple times...I will be nice to anyone who comes in and adds something to the community...n00b or not
there have been plenty of posters who have started in this forum and have not been flamed whatsoever at all
you dont notice them though because we dont speak of them
the few that get on here and piss everyone off are the ones that are noticed because we teach them real quick to think before they post
this forum is not struggling because of n00b bashing...
EDIT - if we didnt haze the n00bs then this forum would be dominated by them...and then no one would ever reply to any threads...they would just create new ones everytime
none of them would ever learn how to use the forum properly because they would have no incentive to do so

I look at it from this point. Eventually, newbs are accepted, we're actually more like a frat house than an online community. We haze them and make fun of them until we finally realize the traits of thier personality, at which point we decide whether we like them or not. It's not that I don't like newbies, I actually help train alot of them. I'm a dick to the newbs on the forum, like *Midnight* for example, if you read some of the stuff he posts, it makes you wanna just hit him. But then look at Sparks, with a whopping 697 rating but me and him are very good friends, I even aquired his AIM name. So I just see it as hazing then more than just plain old being mean. And everyone does it. It takes a whiles for the newbies to start acting non-newbish, and we ALL are dicks to them. I was a HUGE forum newbie. I remember one instance where Rescorian and Meletus were picking on me for like a month, until I actually played one of them and they realized I was a pretty cool person. So a message to all you newbie, don't feel bad if others or myself are bashing you, it's just our way of life, once you start posting more, or start posting decent threads, we'll start to accept you. Like I said, we're more like a frat house

hey johnny chimpo...it isn't necessarily about them wanting our love...but just actually taking what they have to say seriously
if we dont like someone we wont take what they have to say seriously and most of the time wont take the time to read what they wrote (betch you cant read that sentence right the first time)
so in a sense our love = fun forum experience

I know this thread is old. It is, however, not dead.
xyxaxyz2 has a great point. Instead of flaming these people all the time, why don't we just "answer and move on" (as suggested in the first post.) I for one am getting tired of having to explain the actions of others in my answers to questions posed by newbies. Anytime someone who is not know ventures in to the GD forum (no matter if the question is legitimate or not) they get flamed.
Take this thread (http://tacticsarena.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5776) for example. Iceman92 had go through two flame posts to get to his answer. His question was also very legitimate. The rating system is confusing and people are allowed to ask questions.
I just think that if we answered the good questions and moved on, and ignored the stupidity (ie Link9 and friends) then this forum, and especially the GD forum, would be a lot better off.
Let the flames begin, but, more importantly, let me know your opinions.

THOUGH!!
Let me tell you something. I was playing a little game one day called TAO, occasionally browsing around the forums and ever more rarely posting in there. With 3 posts in 1 month I went on happily, until 1 day when Army was down and I strolled to GL to get some games, naturally scared by the unfamiliar environment and made this thread (http://www.tacticsarena.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3494) (sheesh... in hind side look what a newbie thread). Anyway that degraded into what seemed to be a tournament between the 2 servers but turned out to be a BIG trolling thingym'bob. To be quite honest without being severely trolled by the king of trolling himself I would have had 30 posts today (you can scold londonjack when I'm gone). It's sort of like a welcome to the forums thingy some might say.

I totally agree; however, unwarranted assholishness can cause trauma for these new members. I suppose the question then becomes, does this trauma help them to overcome their newdity?
I'm just saying that we always have to explain the behavior of a select few members to all the people who post here, and it gets old. I wasn't really flamed at the beginning of my posting career, but maybe that's because I wasn't really a n00bishly horrible person.
The dilemma arises when we realize that trolling and flaming idiocy actually helps prevent it, but it also drives people away when used indiscriminately against all new posters regardless of the intelligence or nature of their remarks.

personally i really dont have much of a problem with hazing, but when it gets taken to far it starts being detrimental... i coached one person in GL, this gurl RifleRaven, she just about quit because no one was being friendly, now i'm not sure if she posted in the forum or not, but she did play a couple of days on GL before running into me, and she said she was just about ready to give up, but once she met me and others who were actually NICE to her, or at least tried to help her (i say tried, she didnt need much help, she nearly wiped the floor with me  ) she decided to stay on and keep playing, so maybe if instead of 100 percent flaming and hazing, we could at least TRY to be a LITTLE bit helpful, like 90% flames 10% help? and dont tell me flames help ppl, it may work for some, but it just pisses others off, trust me i've dropped off about 2 or 3 forums because the morons wouldnt STOP flaming for anything
thats my rather long 2 cents on the matter

I agree,
My general rule is to only flame in the forum and then only flame when it is clear that everyone (or at least most everyone) is in on the joke (OK, I did go off on Eldee, but I really felt that he was exploiting his "friend" by posting her picture for others to rate). I never flame during games and think that being decent while playing others is actively good for the game (i.e., it encourages people to stick around).

Your missing the point DF, this isn't about being nice to people in the lobby or in the game, this thread is talking about being nice to people on the forums. Anyone can click play online and goof around with the game (meaning any dumbass that in no way represents the community can play, and even run people off), but it's the forums that make someone a part of the community. All online games are going to have their share of grieftards, l337 d00d5, and general morons, and that is the true purpose of the hazing, keeping those fools off the forums. :D
You have to have think skin and a quick wit to hold your own here, and that's good. Personally i will never hold some featureless chump's hand and make him or her feel welcome, because if they have nothing to bring to the community they shouldn't be welcomed in. ;)

You don't have to compromise your newbie hunting pasttime, only be more selective in who you choose to scold and who you choose to answer to. If someone's inexperience really ticks you off that much (in which case I would suggest you get some counseling), then it might be just as good to not post and let someone else with a little bit more restraint respond.

The hostility really is not needed LondonJack, I was merely making a valid point (in my opinion at least) that since everyone on here is a human being, we should still atleast TRY to act civil to each other. Since I'm sure you're one of those people who believes that newbies don't deserve to live and that you are superior to other individuals because you have more experience from a game like this, it's pointless to try to sway you.
As for your accusation of me spamming other boards to increase my post count, I honestly couldn't care less about it. I merely made a conscious decision to actually participate in the forum, sorry for committing such a heinous crime. I've been playing this game since December but I didn't really feel or have the time to spend posting in the forum, if you feel that I was off-topic in a post please feel free to show me and I will gladly correct the offense. Thanks. ^_^

I have to agree with LJ here, anyone, including you, stupid enough to post here should be flamed. :D

You know usually i'm just playing around when i seem hostile, but this time it's actually genuine.
Of the few posts by Xaos i've seen: two refered to the posters above him as children and in essence told them to calm down and play nice (as a belated response to those posts, shut the fuck up Xaos, there are enough net mommies around here), another few were basically laughing at others jokes and saying how cool others ideas are (yes we need more "LOL"ers and parrots around here, really we do), and then take a look at the Rev server forum (first dozen or so posts have the last response by him, i mean i can respect post whoring, but if you don't have the balls to do it where people will actually respond then be gone).

sheesh LJ, his posts came across as well thought out arguments for being more responsible with ur flamage, not mother, at least that was my interpretation, and he even did it without trying to dis on u, i can respect sarcastic hostility, or even real hostility if its warranted, but right now it just seems as if u refuse to even consider his words without taking some personel insult in them, of which i see none
PS: i did not use the term "i can respect" to mock u, i used it because it fit with what i was trying to say

I'm trying to draw the guy out DF, see what's he's made of :p
Maybe he's not cut out to deal with the more aggressive/sarcastic/entertaining aspects of the forums, and that's fine, but to me that's the best part :)
I try to include as many people in it as possible, especially the more serious/puritanical members whenever i can :p
But oh well, too late to get a visceral responce from him now :(
Can i dub you the eternal joke ruiner DF? or do you think you should ruin a few more before gaining that title :p
Edit: as a rare acknowledgement of one of Xyx's posts: Will you ever wake from your dreams silly idealist and join the rest of us in the real world.
Edit: as a response to DF's PS in his next post, in order to avoid whoring like a certain Rev server poster: That's just part of my charm :p

sure i'll take that title LJ... but i promise i wont ruin them anymore until at least an hour into them ;)
PS: actually i didnt realize u were joking, u seemed moderately serious... silly me
LondonJack, I apologize if it seemed like I was post whoring. Feel free to look at any of the points that I have made in my posts and criticize them if they seem like a waste of space and I will try to edit it out and avoid doing it again. I am hardly a prude who can't stand people flaming each other out, it's just sometimes not necessary. You can't deny that people flame just for fun and I'm not condemning that. I'm just saying that if you don't know them well, just shutting them down for being new isn't really a very good way to help TAO grow. And as for me posting in less popular sections LondonJack, I've been doing my posts section by section. I find it's much easier to respond by going through thread by thread, and since General Discussion is the section with the greatest number of threads, I saved it for last. You can expect to see me post in this thread as often if not more often than the others now.
As for your comment Sisquo, I am sort of confused as to why I should not post in this thread. Perhaps I missed something, but I was under the impression that this was a free discussion and I was merely adding my two cents.
EDIT: LondonJack, labelling people post whores because they want to contribute to the forum is not a good way to develop a bigger community. While I respect you and your opinion, I will not let anyone, including you tell me not to voice my opinion on an open forum whenever and wherever I want. I would also like to note that my first posts after I decided to become active in this forum were under General Strategy, hardly an under-used section so your argument doesn't really hold up. ^_^
EDIT: It was not you Erica, it was Sisquo. Clearly, I was under some hallucinogens when I wrote this because I associated your artwork with you when it was on Sisquo's banner. Apologies to all.

I said this? I don't remember saying this! Who said this! It wasn't me! I was framed! You'll get nothing out of me! NOTHING! Allright, I did it! I DID IT! God help me, I did it.... *cries hysterically in some corner*
Seriously though. I don't remember saying this. If I did, then I must have had a temporary lapse into hypocrisy, for as much as some people deserve to have thier tounges scoured away by Brillo pads, in the end, I'm an advocate for free speech.

Your world isn't the real world...your world is unnecesarily and purposly harsh towards certain aspects of the community for reasons of purism and pride...
I thought about your comment a little...can you name me a member, specifically, that offers nothing to the community?

xyx of course there are members that contributed nothing, but why would we remember them? Here are just a few:
Melon Guy
TheTruth (actually he inedvetibly provided some SERIROUS entertainment)
Dwarrior did more bad then good in my opinion (probably still here reading this under a different name)
Xerent
And there are lots of others.
Xaos don't be a psycho. Don't think people go searching for their answers backwards they will look forwards, stop being silly and make a new post rather then editing your old ones.

I never actually saw Melon because the mods were so eager to delete all his posts. From what I hear, he created a lot of excitement.
Serious entertainment is a very big contribution to the forum.
Dwarrior was an excellent addition to the forum. Its real great to have someone to flame, insult, exclude who actually deserves it.
Xerent- I don't read any of his posts...just skip over them for some reason. Maybe you're right. But you did include him in your banner thread.

I think old Snaretta was having a stab at xerent.
There is not a member that has brought nothing to this community. Even if it is one post, or a negative contribution, it is still something. Even the "negatives" turn out to be quite funny. Look at melonguy. At the time, that guy was horrible, but in retrospect, that stuff was hilarious. Now everyone knows who he is, proving he did bring something.
Sorry that I just focused on one of your examples, but xyxaxyz2 covered them fairly well.
All I'm saying is we need to treat new members with respect until they disrespect us. Show them the same amount of respect they show you. If they disrespect and you don't have anything to say, please move on.

Here you go an example of someone that contributed nothing to the community. He took the time to create an account, post an incoherent thread and disappear never to be heard from again. He was meet with the disdain and ridicule that he so richly deserved. (http://www.tacticsarena.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=24495#post24495) ;)
No doubt you will go on to argue that anyone that makes even a single person laugh has contributed something to the forums (grasping at straws would be another way to say that), or anyone that gives us a collective enemy has contributed something. I disagree strongly with that second idea though, when the cost of having to deal with someone outweighs the benefits of their presence, then they have contributed nothing, they have only taken from the community. Smubhert is a prime example of what i'm talking about here.

Would you like to be the mother of the 12 year old girl who saw melonguy's posting? No I didn't think so. I would have done much better without Dwarrior's fake suacide thread, he only brought flaming and anoyance and was banned at least 10 times. Some members simply do not fit here. It's seems hopeless to try to sway you guys but do you think that if someone tried on purpose not to contribute anything would they succeed? The obvious answer is yes. Next stage is to understand that many people do that.

First, ZADICO didn't harm the forum at all. Now lets look at ways in which he helped it:
1. His post is quite funny in a random sort of way.
2. He gave those people a chance to disdain and ridicule him
3. He gave you an example for your argument, allowing us to continue this conversation
Smubhet is one of the few that brought net harm to the community (though I would argue that much of that is from the mods reaction to his actions, but thats another topic), but even then, he did contribute something.
And he was welcomed in; he fell after he came in, your method wouldn't have stopped him from doing what he did.

I gave it an honest effort, although it might not show, but i really did try to take Xyx seriously. I just can't do it though, i'm just not buying what he's selling, the guy that always has to have the opposing opinion, the perpetual net mother, sorry no sale, just reads like a 4 month old troll personna. Oh well i guess i can go back to "moderately" respectful ignoring of his posts peppered with the occasional stabs at his puritanical rantings.
Down with noobs, Up with Flaming, Say no to censorship
Let no one tell you how you may use these forums
Be they a flamer, fight back, flame harder, faster, further
Be they a net mommie, just say FU and they will quietly go away
What you find entertaining is your business, and so it should remain
posting on NyQuil is fun (I should so be sleeping) :D

I know this is a somewhat revolutionary idea, but we need to breed a new generation to replace the lost one, and the way to do that isn't to alienate every new person who comes here. So when people make their first post on the Gen Disc forum, welcome them kindly.
Ignore stupid question posts, or just answer and move on. I'm not a hypocrite. I'm not going to attack in any way anyone with less than 200 posts any more unless they are already a respected member of the community. I have before but no more.
Excellent insight. I just wish people listen(ed).
