Haha cool... So you like Di Hack Sign (I forgot the spelling) I was just wondering, I kinda like the pictures more than the plot of the story in most cartoons. Di Hack is one of them.. do you like the story tho? My desktop is nothing special. It has Rurouni Kenshin all over it...

how do u get a screen shot of your desktop?
EDIT- nvm i just got a program off of download.com
xerent
03-09-2004, 03:14 PM
Yea... the correct syntax is .hack//sign , but since people don't like to say 'period hack backslash backslash sign, it's most commonly referred to as either hack sign, or dot hack sign. ^^. I love the story of .hack//sign. I'm almost done with the series... I'll probably watch a couple eps tonight.
Oh, and I can't see your desktop... I have to apply to join the group, which I am not keen on going through. ^_^
And to get a shot of your desktop, hit the 'print screen' button on your keyboard, and then 'paste' in one of your photo editors, MSPaint works for this as well.

The Dark Lord is very impressed with your bravery Ri'Orius, why, you've barely been 18 for a month (according to your hunting license), and yet you proudly display naughty housewives and sorority webcams as your favorite activity while surfing the TAO forums. Poor Rescorlian. The friendly people in Japan have inserted something slimy and hi-tech into his brain into making him like Dragonball Z.
For a bunch of people with infinite powers, they're usually pretty boring :). It might help since they consider it a sin to use more than 50 frames in an episode.
It's probably a bad idea to say anything about Rescorlian's preferences, but Dragonball Z is too irresistable. Anyone with hair that bad deserves to lose to naked lizard superbeings with supernatural powers once in a while.

I've seen the Alcohol logo before, but what is it?
Yeah call me stupid, but I really don't know.
EDIT: Yeah I did a Google search for it, thinking I'd get spring break destinations and hard liquor sites, but the first one that popped up was Alcohol's website. I found out that it is a CD Recording/Emulation software that can store images of up to 31 CD's on your hard drive, eliminating the need to switch out discs.
from http://www.alcohol-software.com/
Alcohol 120% can handle the creation of 31 virtual CD & DVD-ROMs, allowing the user to play discs without needing the physical disc. It also allows users to make copy CD & DVD to CD-R / CD-RW / DVD-R / DVD-RW / DVD-RAM / DVD+RW.
* Supports:
* Windows 95 / 98 / Me / NT / 2000 / XP
* Can handle up to 31 virtual CD & DVD-ROM drives, all at once!
* So you can run several CD & DVD programs simultaneously.
* The reading speed of a virtual CD-ROM is 200X.
* This means you can play a CD from the virtual
CD-ROM with 200X reading speed.
* Supports normal CD & DVD and CD RAW
sub-channel reading methods:
* RAW reading method enables to emulate all CDs.
* CD formats supported:
* CD-DA, CD+G, CD-ROM, CD-XA, Video CD, Photo CD, Mixed Mode, Multi-session CD
* DVD formats supported:
* DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio
* Support for all current (ATAPI & SCSI) drives:
* CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD+R
* Supports dumping from original disc to the most popular image file formats:
o Media Descriptor Image file format (mds)
o CloneCD Image format (ccd / img / sub)
o CDR WIN Image file format (cue / bin)
Available for disc with one session only, cannot store sub-channeld data
o Standard ISO Image format (iso)
Available for disc with one data track only, cannot store sub-channeld data
* Supports almost any format of CD disc image files for Emulation and Recording:
o Media Descriptor Image file format (mds)
o CloneCD Image format (ccd/img/sub)
o CDRWIN Image file format (cue/bin)
o NERO Image file format (nrg)
o Standard ISO Image format (iso)
o BlindSuite image file format (bwt/bwi/bws)
o DiscJuggler image file format (cdi)
* Supports Bypass EFM error function, it will try to correct regular bit patterns.
This function is disabled in the USA and Japan.
* Offers "Ignore Media Type" option.
This option will force all software to ignore whether the disc is CD-R or CD-RW, allowing it to be recognized as a CD-ROM disc.
* CD writing methods:
Session-At-Once, Disc-At-Once, RAW Session- At-Once, RAW Session- At-Once + SUB, RAW Disc- At-Once (with full PQ/R-W sub-code support)
* DVD writing methods:
Session-At-Once, Disc-At-Once
* CD formats supported:
CD-DA, CD+G, CD-ROM, CD-XA, Video CD, Photo CD, Mixed Mode, Multi-session CD
* DVD formats supported:
DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio
* Support for Buffer-Under-Run prevention technologies including:
BURN-Proof™, JustLink™, Power-Burn™, SafeBurn™, and Seamless Link
* Support for all current (ATAPI & SCSI) drives:
CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
* Support for simultaneous recording to multiple:
CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW.
* Full support for Firewire
(IEEE-1394) and USB protocols
But... It's not free, so it's pointless. If you found a crack, good for you.
Otherwise, I don't want to spend that much money on emulation when I hardly play PC games and iTunes does all my mp3 "emulation" much better, with an unlimited number of "discs."

03-11-2004, 08:18 AM
well its very useful for me, i download from internet a lot of .bin files (programs and games), then i can test them with the virtual drive before burn a CD or DVD(good DVDs +r/-r are rather expensive here just said 2 $ each one), and runs much faster from the virtual drive than from the CD/DVD drive because the .bin file is in the hard disk.

SilverEcho asked me how to do this (http://filebox.vt.edu/users/upton731/macosx_skin.jpg).
The skin is found at ThemeXP.org (http://www.themexp.org/); it's called MacOSXAqua32. I got it a long time ago, so I don't know if it's still there, but a quick search could find a neat Mac OS X skin.
StyleXP (http://www.tgtsoft.com/) was used to apply the skin. I got a crack for the program on Kazaa Lite K++, so I didn't have to pay $20 after using it for 30 days. StyleXP does scroll bars, buttons, fonts, everything.
The dock at the bottom is called ObjectDock (http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/), a free program from Stardock that emulates (very well, I might add) the dock that comes standard with Mac OS X. Wincustomize.com (http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=29) , Stardock's skinning site, has many icons, docklets, backgrounds, and running indicators for ObjectDock. Click the link to Wincustomize.com (http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=29) and click a library that you want to browse. On my dock, the 5 docklets I have running (on the left side) are SysCmd (http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?searchtext=SysCmd&sort=updatedate&order=Descending&library=29&Docklets=on), a great docklet that has a bunch of scripts built in, so you can do things like open the "Run..." dialog or shutdown the computer with one click, Battery Status (http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?searchtext=battery+status&sort=updatedate&order=Descending&library=29&Docklets=on), SysStats (http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?searchtext=SysStats&sort=updatedate&order=Descending&library=29&Docklets=on), which is an amazing docklet that lets you monitor CPU usage, temperature via MBM (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/), XML weather from weather.com (http://www.weather.com/index.html), among other things; it's really a must have for anyone who runs Object Dock. Next is Capture (http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?searchtext=capture&sort=updatedate&order=Descending&library=29&Docklets=on), a neat docklet that allows you to take a screenshot on a timer, from the screen or the window, into a number of formats, and save it with a title of your choice and into a folder of a path you specify. The last is SysStats again, only this time running the XML weather feed instead of the digital clock. The digital clock I have came from another set of config files for SysStats, that I couldn't find again on WinCustomize. A digital clock does come with SysStats though.
I hope that this post is helpful to all you Mac wannabes out there. I'm getting a Mac soon enough, as soon as I have $2500 to spend on the one I want. Until then, running StyleXP and ObjectDock on a Dell Latitude D800 is as close as I'm going to get.

Way cool. You have RPGMaker 2003. I had that on my old PC. Great fun! You could make little adventures about evil ogres who hated watermelon prostitutes or anything you wanted. :) I used to know all the little tricks of that thing.

What is the point of that Windows key disabler?
I use my windows key all the time: win+L to lock the computer, to access the start menu since I don't use the taskbar, etc. Maybe you use that for when you're playing games or something?

Yeah, the last one I owned was a IIsi like 12 years ago or something. I fell in love with OS X over the summer. It beats the pants off of XP in almost all aspects. The only thing is the lack of software support (age-old complaint,) but even that is being rectified constantly. Plus, Macromedia, Adobe, and lots of HTML editors are better on Macs, and for someone in web design, a Mac is as good as it gets. I just have to get lots of money, then I'll be happy :) Oh, wait...

Why were desktops meant to have icons?
I hate the way a desktop looks with all those icons just thrown on there with no organization. Now, if you have NexTStart or Desktop X or Sysmetrix or one of the widget-holders, then I can understand icons, but they're organized categorically and they have neat skins.
SilverEcho, get WindowBlinds from Stardock.com (http://stardock.com/), and search Wincustomize.com (http://wincustomize.com/) for skins. They have a ton.
Yo ho ho!
I think I'll be throwin' me self in the mix. Here's me desktop, it's from the best cinematic of all time, from the way to under-rated game Final Fantasy IX. Check it out, that game's a doozy;).
And I kinda screwed up when I pasted it, there's like three of the desktops pasted on top of one another.

Ah yes, I must have missed it because the only link I found to yours was giving me a 404. Perhaps there's a working one in this thread elsewhere, but as you can see from the clock in my screencap, I'm up well past my bedtime, and am not about to go searching.
Anyhow, it's a Linux system, running WindowMaker. Linux has roughly one million different window/desktop managers, though many are similar. There are certanly more windows-y ways to go, perhaps I'll post another screenshot tomorrow...
The background image, of course, has got nothing to do with Linux. The quality isn't very good though, perhaps I'll have to make my own when I get a chance.
EDIT: And whatever you want to call it, it certainly isn't clunky. :D

1) because I just re-installed my system yesterday
2) because WindowMaker is different like that. Right-click on the background and you get a start-menu-ish menu at your cursor. Except more customizable.

xerent
03-22-2004, 09:02 AM
It's not a program. It's a webpage.
Go to Desktop Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > New
From here you can enter a web page you want on your desktop, either a url, or a local page you have on your computer (Which is what I did)
The links are all your normal a href stuff, in a table. I used Magic:The Gathering font.
<font color="aaaaaa">..::google</font> <form action="http://www.google.com/search" name=f>
<input maxlength=256 size=120 name=q value="">
This is what I used for the google search bar.

That's awesome, xerent. Thanks, I'm going to try that.
That Google code should be helpful too.
EDIT: When you do the href stuff to programs and such, do you have to do anything special? I made a webpage for my desktop, but it thinks I'm wanting to download my broswer when I really want to open it. Is there anything I can do, or will I always have to be prompted to open it?
xerent
03-22-2004, 12:57 PM
I've been trying to find away around that myself. In the meantime, I've gotten used the the click-space combo, much less noticable.
Xerent, I do something similar, having a local web page that contains my most used links and a google search form. I don't use it as my desktop though because doing so uses the IE HTML rendering engine and I'm about as anti-IE as it gets.
There are a couple of useful bits that can be added to the Google code.
Another input tag that bumps the returned searches to maximum.
<input name=num type=hidden value=100>
And an addition to the text box input
<input maxLength=256 size=40 name=q value="" onchange="this.form.submit();">
The added javascript allows for the form to be sent by just clicking anywhere else on the page. (although, since most people are already typing into the form anyway, slapping the return key isn't that hard.

ok xerent, i'm going to teach you a little trick that will open the program instead of downloading it. In your html head, put the following:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function ShellExJ(filename)
{
var folder = filename.substr(0, filename.lastIndexOf('/'));
var objShell = new ActiveXObject("Shell.Application");
objShell.ShellExecute(filename, '', folder, 'open', 1);
}
</script>
This will set the parameters you use for ShellExJ to transfer the command to windows shell instead of internet explorer.
Now you can make your links like this:
<a target="_self" onClick=" ShellExJ('C:/Blah blah blah/program.exe')" href="javascript:;">program</a>
problem solved. paranda's such a nice guy, he let me look at his source code for his desktop :)
thrdflrmshr

Ok, I copied that into my head, but it says it can't find the JavaScript. Do I need a script library file for it to reference?

My desktop (http://jupiter.walagata.com/w/theviper2288/desktop.jpg) is fairly simple. I use Trillian and Winamp more than anything. Taskbar is a bit funny looking because I have it on auto-hide, that's why it is covering up Trillian like that.
xerent
03-22-2004, 07:51 PM
Neat! Thanks!
However, that href= bit in the link tag opens up a new IE window, looking for whatever is in quotes. If I get rid of it, it works beautifully, save for the fact that I don't get a cursor change when I hover over the link.
Grr.

Hmm well for some reason, probably a safeguard back when these forums supported html coding, java script is getting parsed by the forums as two words. That space shouldn't be there. Delete it and see if your problems are fixed. Again, javascript should be one word.

Unfortionately no... that's way too expensive for me, I paid about 1,500 total for all my drums (5 cymbals, 6 toms, 1 bass, 4 snares, hardware, bags, heads, pedals...), and that kit might be worth 1,500 just for the drums. Maybe more, maybe less. I actually am not exactly sure what type those are, I'm guessing Starclassics. I just found the pic and did some work to it, resized it, the hole bit. My kit's black, but I still don't have any good pictures of it yet, at least not till I get my pictures developed. OK, I think I have confused people now with my drum talk, so I'll go away...
Oh, and here's a picture that's a bit more like my kit, exept I have some more cymbals and drums. And my kit's black, everything but the snare which is orange fade.

Very cool indeed. My drummer has a Yamaha Stage Custom, and some of his cymbals are Zildjian, like his A Sweet Ride. It sounds great overall. He really wants an OCDP set though, but they are insanely expensive.

Yea, I was looking at some of them at www.indoorstorm.com where you can actually play some of the drums. The next kit I'm thinking about getting, when I get back in a band and get money and need a good kit for live sound and stuff, I thought about trying Spaun. Pearl sucks... (had to put that in here :)) But then again, do I really want to be Spaun Drummer? NO! I need new cymbals, I'm currently using Sabian B8s which is like the cheapest you can get by Sabian. Yea, they suck ;) I want to get some AAs and Hand Hammered... HAH! One Hand Hammered ride costs as much as all my cymbals together! Well, maybe not all... *sigh* I wish there was a drumming forum, I would "own" that one...

Well, in most cases it is, but sometimes, like the Depp picture, it's just too much trouble to find a larger picture, and the tiled looks just fine. The more the merrier :D.

You should save desktop images as a jpeg. The compression logarithm works better for pictures with many colors and no solid areas of one color.
Anyway, you'll notice that I don't have any desktop icons at all. They suck. All my shortcuts are on the dock, and I can get anywhere I need to from there. I also like to look at my desktop image uninhibited.
And you use MSN explorer? I didn't know people still did that.

What's so good is that it has built in Google, a popup blocker that really blocks popups, no Avtice-X controls for malicious code to install spyware, and it's faster than anything I've used before. It has support for all the media plugins you need, and Java, too.
MSN just has too much extra fluff that is totally pointless. If you want the extras, get Mozilla's full package. It has email, broswer, blah blah blah. I just wanted a browser, and no extraneous crap. Firefox gives me just that.

Wrong. WinMX was the way to go, and it still is really awesome, even though the number of users has declined significantly.
Now, Soulseek is the way to go, if you only want music. I don't bother to download movies or software, but I have 13.5GB of music on my HDD.

Kazaa is obviously the way to go if you want destroyed songs and some various things in the mail from RIAA but I doubt it's anything important. Anyways, I'm a Winmx user and have been for quite some time. There's not that great of a selection but it's the cleanest by far. Between movies and music I had to get a seperate harddrive to store those. Currently I'm taking up about half of the 120 gb harddrive for those.

Even if you do find the uncorrupted version of a song that is named correctly, most likely the ID3 tags aren't correct, which is bad for iTunes users.

Ok, the comment about older operating systems was not meant to be caustic. It's just that even XP is almost three years old already. W2K is four years old, W98 is six years old. I'm just wondering how anyone can get anything done on machines like that. MS is due to upgrade XP any time now, and people are still using the OS from two or three generations ago.

If you just want to give Linux a shot without needing to sacrifice anything, Knoppix is a good choice (I think, I've not actually tried it. But it comes recommended, and Glamdring would tell you more about it). I'm sure there are others too. I'm a Slackware devotee and as such might be tempted to recommend the Slackware Live CD to you, but it's not the easiest place to start. Not *hard*, but certainly not as easy as many other distros.
If/when you're ready to take the plunge and install it on a disk, there are about a million options, depending on how much time you want to put into it, what you want it to do, and how much computer power you have, among other things.
Glamdring
08-24-2004, 11:26 AM
knoppix is, indeed, the thing to do if you want to try linux but don't know anything about it yet. Actually, in that case the first thing to do is use your well-honed googling skills and browse some help forums. There are masses of them out there devoted to linux info. Then use knoppix.
Here's what you do... you go into your bios and set it up so that it boots from cd by default, and then goes to windows if there's no cd. It'll tell you how to do all that. Once you've set it up like that, you don't really have to change it unless you have some other boot cd that you regularly leave in your drive but don't want to use...
From that point on, use your noggin and I'm sure you'll be fine. You're a smart little aussie, you can figure it out. ;)
I do recommend it if you've never tried it. If you have a wireless connection though, you won't be able to hook up to the internet. In fact, I think the only way you *will* be able to is if you're connected to broadband by ethernet. Otherwise, you have to mess around with loading drivers, etc., and that's not something you're going to figure out just by using your noggin, no matter how aussie it happens to be...
Right, the point. I had a point I think... ermm maybe not. Well here's *a* point for you... it's good, but look around online for info about it first, if you want to actually do anything with it.

08-24-2004, 01:09 PM

Like I said, I don't really know about wireless. I'm assuming you've already searched Google a bunch, and if there really is no driver for it, then you're out of luck (for the moment...).
Just out of curiosity, what make/model of USB adapter is it?

It is fairly easy to use Linux with dial-up, I believe.
It is not so easy to obtain Linux with dial-up, apart from paying for it. (Which isn't a bad idea, but after you've found a distro you're comfortable with and would like to support.)

Ah, if the radio is integrated, then there should be no problem. USB drivers are a bitch and a half to begin with, let alone getting some that work on Linux.

becuase you can (i know, i've done it) completely screw EVERYTHING over if you dont know what your doing exactly, its easy enough to avoid, but there are some points where its also easy enough to do, and besides, the Live CD's give you a VERY good taste for linux without having to invest hardly any time
that said though you may want to get a friend with a broadband conection to download and burn the Live CD(s) for you
