Image Shack is under construction, and freewebs doesn't work for some reason. I paste in the url and add .txt but it's just a little red X.

Freewebs works for me :D
Maybe the sites sense evil??

Imageshack is a .us url. Not .com
Goto http://imageshack.us and it will work fine.
As for free sites, very few allow for hotlinking (which you need to do banners)
Freesites include:
http://tripod.com
http://angelfire.com
http://freeservers.com

I myself got tired, so I went to http://namealerts.com and bought a domain name for $9 a year. I then started to piggyback it off another webhosting account I have for work. For $9.99 a month, we get to host up to 10 domain names on a total od 200 megs of space, with up to 10,000 email boxes, free email bounce, email forwarding, mailing lists, and robots.

Ok, n00b question. I have this screenshot in paint, I've looked through the forums and tried most of the suggestions, but I can't seem to get it to work. It's a .bmp file, so imageshack doesn't work. Could someone take me through how they did it step by step? I'm a bit of a computer dunce you see......

brinkster is good but you cant exterrnally link them which means you have to open a new page everytime you want to view a piccie stored on ur account

What does that mean? Explain it to me as though I am someone who only knows how to turn the computer on, and play TAO. Which is actually true.

the easiest thing would be to convert the image to a jpg...

open it in paint the goto file and save as...

where it says file type, select jpg (jpeg)

save it where ever... then you should be able to upload it.

LeiChan
03-10-2004, 07:22 PM
Eh? Small huh? Just re-size it in any picture editing tool like paint then submit it in...it will retain the same size you had originally changed it to...

EDIT: Theres the large size limit but you can get around that by changing the bit at the end like .JPEG, .GIF and theres many more...just look it up in googles and you will know how soon...

Thanks. Really helpful.

Like what? I've tried every website on this thread, they're all quite confusing except for imageshack and I can't save my screenie as a .jpg

Edit: I've used photobucket for this:

http://img34.photobucket.com/albums/v104/botle/1300_Legender_win.bmp

Is it too small to see? And why won't it enlarge?

...
03-10-2004, 07:24 PM
then save it as a .gif:)

Bottle

That doesn't work either, I can only save it as a .bmp

I would be willing to host peoples websites and their images for either a small fee, or I might just do it for free. Depends I guess. If enough people show interest in this I will see what I can do. :)

You can change it. Just go to paint then click save as. A screen will pop that shows the pictures. Click on the bit that says save as type...that will show the list of types like .GIF that you change it to..change it then save it. You done....easy...

Theres another better alternative to paint that you can use. http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlpixia.html try and see if that works when you change it. It's up to you keep that file ( I got it... ) or just delete it after you downloaded it...

i dont think the look into your computer, its not legal, its only an application where you upload the picture or file you want to convert, similar to imageshack.

BMP Bitmaps are not a web ready image. Only gifs and Jpgs. Many sites will let you load them but then nothing happens.

As your clan buddy and unemployeed WEB DESIGNER/GRAPHIC ARTIST. You should know you could have sent to me. I don't get in game a lot but I do sit in front of my computer for just about 10 hours a day. I could easily convert the bmp for you and upload somewhere... Thoughts for the future. All in your court man.

Bottle

It seems as though there is no other way. I will accept mel's offer, since he is my clan member, and is happy to do it, it will be easier to contact him (sorry Jeff, noidea). Thanks mel. And check your PMs.

Press Prnt Scrn
Open MS Paint
Go to Edit>Paste
Go to File>Save As...
In the dialog that comes up, type the file name in the top box on the bottom of the window.
From the drop down menu under the file name box, choose *.jpg or *.jpeg (Joint Photographic Experts Group, the best file format for screen shots)

If you just pasted the screenshot and saved with the default settings in MS Paint, then it probably saved as a *.bmp (Bitmap.) Bitmaps suck. They are bad, nasty, they suck, they are uncompressed, they suck, they have lousy web browser support, they're awful, and they suck. And they suck.

Bottle, this is for you...

In the future, follow the instructions above, and use either imageshack.us (http://imageshack.us/) or walagata.com (http://walagata.com/) to host your *.jpg files.

Even though you may try to convert filetypes in Paint, it doesn't do it properly, as you found out through all your frustration.

One other thing, Bottle. Most universities give their students free webspace to host files on. Filebox.vt.edu is the name of Virginia Tech's hosting service, and we get 30mb of space. I don't know how uni's in England differ, but I would think that they give you at least something to work with. PM me if you need some more help. In fact, anyone can PM if he has a question about imaging.

It's quite simple third, I can't save .jpgs AT ALL. Only .bmps. So thanks for trying, but I can't get it to work. I sent them to meletus, and I posted one of them that he sent me on the Create-a-Unit forum, but it came up with a wonderful red cross. Just don't worry about it, I'll survive without screenies for now.

Alright Bottle, you can save as *.jpg, but you cannot convert from *.bmp to *.jpg using only MS Paint.

If you have Windows, you have Paint, and if you have Paint, you can save *.jpg files, with absolutely no exceptions (now that I say that, someone is going to come up with an exception...)

Let me get this straight, though. You have two or three files that are bitmap versions of screenshots you have taken. You wish to host them, but you cannot find a host for *.bmp files, and this is because bitmaps suck huge rectum.

Your screenshots are *.bmp (bitmap) format. Without a true conversion to a *.jpg, which you cannot do with Paint, you can't really change the file type, even if you change the extension.

What I am saying is, that while you may need to send the screen shots you have currently to someone with Photoshop CS (me!) you don't have to always do that.

Honestly, try this for me. Take a screen shot, right now, open Paint, paste it, Save As..., and save it as a *.jpg from the outset. Then you can host it.

If you want, I can merely change the format from *.bmp to *.jpg for the ones that you have right now. I believe in the principal of catching a fish for a man feeds him for one day, but teaching a man to fish feeds him for a lifetime. What I am trying to do is both help you with your current situation, and teach you how to resolve it so it doesn't happen in the future. PM me or post here again if you don't understand anything, or if I misunderstood what you're saying. You can get this worked out. No one has to be screenie-free!!!

Bottle
03-12-2004, 07:01 AM
I took a screenie of your post. Opened paint, pasted, save as, .jpg .......... "Paint cannot save this file".

I CANNOT DO IT. It's as simple as that. My computer simply will not save .jpg files AT ALL. Unless I send the .bmps to someone (meletus did it for me, and I got the pictures but when I pasted the links into a post the dreaded red cross came up instead) I just can't do it.

Thanks for trying, I agree with the teach a man to fish thing, but it just can't be done.

Well then, I have never seen anything like that. I'm going to follow my steps to a T, and report back about what happens.

*5 minutes later*

Ok, I followed my steps. Now, I'm not trying to be condescending or anything, but you did say you know crap about computers.

When you go to save the file, and the dialog pops up, DO NOT type a file extension into the name box. Then, you are SURE that you are choosing "JPEG (*.JPG, *.JPEG, *.JPE, *.JFIF" as your file format? Those are the only things you need to do. If you can't do that, you need to download another program. If you can't download, I really don't know what else to do besides fly out to England next week and fix your computer for you.

Bottle
03-12-2004, 07:38 AM
Lol third, I know that much about computers, I think it's just my operating system (windows 98) or something. And my university doesn't allow me to download stuff. So don't fly out to England, ok?

Thanks for trying.

thrdflrmshr
03-12-2004, 08:34 AM
What uni do you go to, that doesn't allow downloading of anything?

I mean, if that was the case, you couldn't have email... Do you really survive college without email?

At VT we have to map network drives in order to install Visual Basic, among other things. It's like 12 hours of downloading from a T1 connection, something around 6 CD's worth of info for one program. Surely you must be able to get around downloading things. How do you get stuff onto your computer if you can't get it from the Internet?

Silly old fashioned Brits...

Bottle
03-12-2004, 09:39 AM
No, it's just we can't download games or new programs. I made an exception for TAO (it didn't need downloading though, did it?)

I go to Oxford uni. And yes, we have email.:D
