There is a relatively new virus going around that is known as a worm. This worm attempts to transmit itself from an infected computer by broadcasting to random IP addresses from an infected computer. For the past 3 days I have been getting disconnected in every game I have played. I am normally over protective on anti virus software, but this one got on my computer and caused my problems.
A link to the symantec (Norton Antivirus makers) page with information on this worm may be found at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.welchia.b.worm.html
My symptoms were:
Unable to connect to certain TAO servers.
Unable to maintain a stable enough connection to play a full game
Very slow and laggy text in the lobby and game play.
Unusual end program messages when I tried to shut my computer down.
Symantec wrote a tool that will scan for this worm and remove it, and it can be found here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.welchia.worm.removal.tool.html
If you want to try something else, there is a reputable website that offers free online virus scans of your PC. Their site can be found at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
I recommend only using these tools if you trust symantec, or trendmicro, and know a little bit about what you're doing. Don't blame me or TAO if you have to reinstall windows or something wierd.
I updated my virus definitions, downloaded the removal tool, restarted in safe mode, and did a full scan. I then ran the removal tool and restarted the computer in normal mode. I am now able to log on to all TAO servers and have played 4 complete games without disconnecting.
I have a cable modem, and run a firewall with Norton antivirus software, but somehow it even got through onto my machine. As far as I'm concerned, Norton is the best and I won't even argue with anyone over it. Even if you're more careful than I am, if you have these symptoms it's time to do a little check.
