As a gothic myself i have made this thread to discover ur views on people like me who r using the armageddon server.
If u HATE goth's can u send me a reply into why u hate them.
And if u LIKE goths reply of wat ur favorite band is and why u think goth's r not to be hated but respected.
If u r a goth talk to me on the armageddon server so we can battle and have some Gothic chat.
The trend will never die as it already is.

I see goths as attention seekers. They try so hard to be different that they go for the most outlandish and try to shock people. Interestingly, from a report I wrote in psychology class on gothics it seems an overproportionate amount of these people come from abusive childhoods (physical emotional and sexual). I just hope they can get the help they need to realize they don't need to be like that to be different or to have feelings of self worth.

I find that South Park's description of Goths was dead on, at least fitting the way goths at my particular HS. They try so hard to be "nonconformists," that they attempt to acheive this by acting, talking, and dressing exactly like their friends or other goths. They even tend to listen to certain music just because, it's goth music. I personally am against the way people get labeled in HS, and in communities in general. Just 'cause someone dresses a certain way they get called prep, goth, skater, punk, jock, nerd, and other annoying things.

As a Christian, I honestly don't know much about goths except that they think they have magical powers from worshiping nature or satan or something, and even that may be wrong. I do not hate them, but there is no love lost either. Like cs_zero, I kinda just avoid them.

wow...
I understand I'm a newb here. But I have this discussion MANY times before in other fourms and venues.
Goths just like to express themselves in that way. once upon a time I used to be a bouncer for a club that had "Gothic nights" and that had to be my most favirote of all nights to work. Hardly ever a fight (I think maybe two in the three years I worked there) and though slightly emotional I found most to be very kind.
all in all though it's just there thing. not to compare but It's the same with Jocks/gays/Lesibiens/Cheerleaders/Band Geeks/Gamers.
there just happy that way (though it may not seem like it sometimes) sure there trying to be diffrent. But isn't most everyone in there own way.
BTW some Goths may make it seem it's about anti-Religion But I have Seen plenty of Christen goths to know better

I have a question. If goths are trying not to conform why do they all wear black?
Thats does not make sense! Why would a 7 foot wookie live with 2 foot ewoks? THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!!

machin shin, i am also a Christian, and i was a goth too. it depends on your definition of "goth," if it's just the look or some of the beliefs that go along with being a goth. my definition was dark clothing, dark music (albeit Christian (if you want to know some good Christian goth bands, talk to me and i'll find you some)), and stuff like that. it's not a plea for help, it's not to get attention, but rather just another way of "finding youself." problem is, i wasted a bit of money just trying to look goth, it wasn't worth it anymore. the only goth store around me is hot topic, and that's an hour away.... if i had the money, i would look goth again, but it's just way too expensive.
everyone that said something mean about goths should look at themselves in retrospect and see how they are different, not just in clothing, but in speech or music preference, stuff like that. are you doing it just for attention? if you are, then i would change my motives if i were you.
personally, i love goths. they are great to talk to! most are just really deep into their own emotions and they understand what they're feeling, unlike people that just go around, sucking their thumbs, wondering if the sky really is falling.

I don't know what these boards are about, I just found this through a google search, but I have to say goths are well, I don't really see the point. I guess ideally they are the type who will right the music, the poetry, the movies, the books, but there is no reason to put on the eye make up, the all black clothing, the looking scary type of stuff. I mean, I'm one of the real non-conformists. I'm a libetarian nerd!
Owned. I personally like labels, they give you a sense of belonging. I mean if I'm a nerd, that means I'm smarter than the others which means I'm going somewhere! Yay! If I'm a goth that means I have emotional trama, which means I can be some kind of an artist! Yay! If I'm a prep, that means I can go into politics yay! (BOO!!! LIBERAL SLIME!!) If I have no label then I'm going no where! Yay! (just kidding, that means you can go anywhere)
So I like labels, I've got my 1337 group of nerds calling themseleves such, and everyone soon stopped calling us nerds as an insult.

I don't hate them at all. I'm not goth, but I like the style. Although I'm a good mourner, and I believe in vampires and werewolves (I've read enough to believe they are likely to exist), my mother hates goths and think they're ridiculous. I simply just tell her: "You don't know them. They're just people like you and me. Why should you judge somebody like that? You keep telling me that's a bad thing." Indeed, she tells me not to judge people, but there she is staring and calling them names. JUDGING them! My mom's a lost cause...
I remeber I ran into a goth. I got scared (not because I'm scared of THEM.) because I was wearing half punk/half pink and/or cute clothes. It was embarrasing, but he just went past me without saying a word. I said Excuse Me.

I'm not goth myself but I have friends who are. It seems that being "goth" doesn't really make your personality any different from those of us who don't dress that way. It's not a display of personality but of style. I guess most people are sterotypist who think if you are goth you must have this certain kind of personality etc. etc.

I completely agree. It really doesn't make your personality any different from all the others. Even me who only dresses as punk/cute/girly. Altough, I went to Hot Topic recently. I'm happy now.

I always thought that Gothism started a very long time ago. It was a cult that had something to do with Satism, or something of the sort.
But nowadays, its been modernized. As long as you wear all black, wear dark make-up, and listen alternative/punk/"gothic" music, you can be classified as Gothic, even if you have no religious beliefs at all. There are some who want attention, some who do it just because their friends do it, and some who just like to express theirselves this way. Though if you don't know the past of something you say you're apart of, you may be messing in things that you can't handle.
Personally, I don't care. If you want to wear all black, and look like you've never seen daylight in your entire existence, then go ahead. As long as you aren't hurting me in any way, I won't think less of you.

Actually, the earliest ppl to use the name gothic's were more paganistic ppl, with nature and such. Granted, to many relgious groups thats the same as stanism, but i like to think its not so cut and dry.
Anyways, all u goths keep up with it. What with the commercialization and popularizing of it, ppl like me make good money with stores like spencer's and such.

Being a half-goth, I know that you don't normally spot a true goth. Gothicness is more of a state-of-mind than a fashion sense, as people now-a-days think it is.
A punk would be someone that dresses like Green Day or something. Punk is more of a fashion sense.

we look scary? thats nothing, your lucky i cant scan nick into the computer, he would give you a heart attack.
yeah, i listen to hard core music, dont believe in any real religion, so am i agnostic, uh, wear black and "gothic" clothes. (such a bad term.. i mean, come on!) i dont coat my face in makeup. yeah, my skin is more white, and i love the dark and causing trouble. i have my group of friends, they are kinda like me, i cause tons of trouble, yeah, well...
people look up to me, i have noo idea why.
my teachers call me a little gothic child who is insane, therefore they never let me dissect anything, cut anything, or light candles.. or give me sharpened pencils. i mean, since i have to wear school uniforms, i wear my wristbands, and my black shirts under my school shirt..
we arent allowed to wear any makeup at our school, but i wear black eye liner anyway.
some of the other goth people at my school talk to me all the time, it seems they are interested in the way i do everything, since it isnt exactly what people think goths do.
they are many classifications for gothic. i mean, you have the posers who wear all black, are christian and listen to nothing but good charolette. then you have the people that are like me, that listen to "gothic" music, wear black, like to cause trouble, have their group of good friends, and have no really satanic religion. then, you have the people that wear all black, all that makeup, worship satan, and are in cults.
yeah, so, WE DONT SMELL BAD EITHER!

somewhere in the bill of rights there is a section on freedom of religion, so goths are normal people.

your half-right. Your typical gothic, or at least the ones proclaimed and described here, are not a religon. They're a lifestyle choice. Much like being gay. Lifestyle choices are also protected under our constitution, even though socially they might be less than accepted in many cases.
Also, I like to think of them as not being normal. I also like to think of most religons as not normal, and all lifestyle choices. Thats mostly because I don't like normal. I think there's some sort of 1984 fear in my mind, somewhere in the back, but I like to keep a variety out there. But i 'll grant that socially/commercially goth has become somewhat normal.
(ext note:I don't claim anyone saying they're a goth, or who is one fits this stereotype below, its just how i've been taught in classes to react.)
However, your seterotypical goth is also using it as a subtlel cry for help in many cases (not all, but a good percentage, i'll give it if I find it in one of my works). These cry for helps can push them to take radical concepts which result in harm to themselves or others, which is NOT ok. I think this applies in cases where people have more suddenly adopted the look/style. A lot of peopl also just gradually trend into a gothic style, which is more likely means their tastes have simply developed that way in a natural manner.
(ext note:I don't claim anyone saying they're a goth, or who is one fits this stereotype below, its just how i've been taught in childcare classes to take note of them. Goths are not unuiqe in being described in such a manner, many other style choices are deeply explained and examined.)

I consider myself gothic, and I believe we deserve just as much respect as anyone else. No more, no less. Ok. Here's the truth people. Gothic/Goth is not about hot topic, or hating life, or being depressed, or smelling funny or conformity, or even rebellion for that matter. Goth/ Gothic has so many different meanings. We don't expect you to pitty us. Do I loiter hot topic? No. Do I cut myself? No. Do I hate myself and my life? No. Bad things have happened. But life is what YOU make of it. Not what some stereotype says about you. Gothic is not about all black, so open ur eyes. Don't u see the kids in red velvet and emerald green and all those other colors (even if they are darker) Or is it just me?!?! What about that flamin red and pink hair? Is that not colorful enough for you? lol.
It is not a phase, it actually fits into a time period. Well a couple. The middle ages. The dark ages. Renaissance, but most importantly, Midieval times. (ect) "Gothic" itself originated in Europe during the 12th through the 15th century. Seeing as how this time period was considered Gothic, The modern generation of gothic, took an appreciation for its history. I know I did. I might not be an expert but I take interest in it. Midieval times --midieval clothing. That is where some Gothics get their ideas for how they dress. They like it, they will wear it. Not because another gothic person is. This is where the term "poser" steps in. To most of you, Goths/Gothics are attention seeking posers. Well, think what you will but not everyone in this distorted label, is.
For example. there is this girl named Andrea. She has no friends. She decides she has a terrible life, so she cuts herself and shows it off to the gothic kids, because they are the ones she belongs with. The morbid kids. Soon she begins to dress in all black to let everyone in her school know she is with these kids and she belongs to just another clique. She begins to shop at hot topic and she claims to listen to all these different bands just because they have the look, though she has never actually listened to them. She spends her time calling everyone else a poser, because it makes her feel superior... <--That is what a poser is (in my opinion). We all have our opinions. Now, unfortunately we have so many of them now of days.
Ok kids here is another definition of Gothic, or to seperate the terms, "Goth". Goth/Gothic may also relate to "The Goths" Who were a Germanic Tribe who invaded the Roman empire during the early christian era (4th,5th, and 6th century)--i believe--. There were the Ostrogoths (one tribe of the eastern Goths) and the Visigoths (of the Western Goths). This may not have anything to do with --Gothic-- of modern times, However, anyone who thinks they are capable of judging a gothic/goth, should know what the hell they are talking about. GET YOUR DEFINITIONS STRAIGHT.
Ok NOW. As for religion. Gothic contains no certain religion, or rules. Nowhere does it say you must worshop satan, and cut yourself, and hate life, and you must be an enemy of God and you must think you have magickal powers, and you have to love the darkness and hate the light and worshop vampyres! Nowhere does it say this. Ok if a Gothic person likes Vampyres, and darkness, and magick that is part of their PERSONALITY. NOT GOTHIC. Ok I love life. Nature is beautiful. And by the way my christian friends, Gothic has nothing to do with magickal powers, even if a Gothic person takes interest in it. I do. You know why? Because I follow a religion.
This religion is called Wicca. It is not the only magickal religion either. Magickal religions are not like harry potter, or what most people think they are. This isn't fairytale stuff. This is real. Just different then what you'd think. I have been into this before i ever got into the "gothic" thing. It is easier for me to follow, and believe then christianity is, even if I still have christian beliefs. I dislike satan, and I love God. I am still Gothic. Why? Because that is one of my many interests. The interests that make me who I am.
Moving on, once again, Gothic is also a movement. The Gothic movement, and this pretty much is what the music and style is all about, although alot of --real--goths (who got out of the hottopic stage) dress in midieval clothing, this derived from mideival times (as i explained earlier). There are so many different kinds of Gothic. There is Cybergoth, Romanticgoth, Vampyregoth, graver, rivethead, punk (punk and rivethead are not gothic, but they are branches) and punk is pretty much the longlost cousin. I am not an expert on Gothic.
How do I know more then you? I STUDY. I will continue to study it, because knowledge is the greatest gift. These are common dictionary definitions people. Nowhere should it say "depressed, hates life, satanic" anywhere. Satanic came into it because "Darkness" is a branch from satanic and also Gothic. This does not mean Satanists are Gothic, and Goths are satanic. It's just a simularity. Wicca is envolved alot with positivity, and so is christianity, so positivity is a branch between those two religions. Just because they are alike does not mean they are the same. Gothic people come in many different shapes, sizes, smells (that is on the person themselves) So if you are immature and say that all goths smell, you should have some sense slapped into you. We come with many different interests.
I myself, think I am normal. Why? Because this IS normal to me. It IS normal for me. This is who I am. This is what I have always been. Perhaps not always on the outside, but then i learned to dress myself :-) and for those of you wearing Hollister and American eagle, nothing wrong with that, just stop saying that Gothic people don't dress proper, when some of the clothing was worn since the 12th century. Gothic has been around much longer then you think. AND btw sorry for making this so long, but congratz if you made it to the end. You've earned my respect. And btw a few of my favorite bands are Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Rammstein, alice in chains, smashing pumkins, KoRn, Noble Tyranny...Things like that. <3 Email me if this interests you or if you have any more questions. and a few last closing statements to my reply --To hottopic shoppers, I have nothing against you, i go there occasionally to buy a ring or something if i happen to be in the mall, it's fine, just don't become addicted, and don't think it is gothic, because it isn't.
NEXT, I do not conform or rebel. Conforming to something is doing it because you either have to, or you want to, to get you where you want to be. (like to fit in with a certain group of people). I do not rebel. (Rebellion, in MOST cases is when people WANT to seperate themselves from people) --which if you think about it, is just another branch of conformity...-- I do neither. I do what I want. People are so focused on conforming and rebelling, that they don't have time to be themselves. I get called "vampyre" all the time. People say i must be dead. I ignore i most of the time. I wear lots of lace, velvet, vinyl, things you'd find at online gothic stores mostly, or in antique clothing (usually it is hard to find at an atique store). But the next time you see that gothic kid walking down the street, think of this, and perhaps you'll have a little bit more respect, and they will respect you more, and the world will be a better place! STOP WHINING BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE THE GOTHIC KIDS. and to any goths, i hope you payed close attention to this and learned something. As i said, After all, Knowledge, is truely the greatest gift.
oh and about the whole gothic music thing, most people mistake Gothic with heavy metal. Some heavy metal has gothic in it, but not all gothic based music, and/or heavy metal is about how life sucks and how much they hate their daddies. and not all is screaming. That is screamo emo or it is just lack of talent. Gothic based bands like Nightwish, or "The gathering" There is no screaming. Try listening to them. Go to launch.com and look up the gathering and listen to "monsters" or nightwish "i wish i had an angel". That "i'm mad at my daddy, and the world SUCKS!" shyt is for goodcharlotte. People also get this whole Emo label and Gothic mixed up. I am so sick of these stereotypes. (though i admitt i have used them too) We all have, stereotypes are like when you look at someone and autimatically judge them without knowing them. That's just what i think. but yeah this whole big thing is my opinion and actually alot of it speaks the truth. With my opinions added in.
