I am actually considering buying this game and dont know if i really want to because of the price and stuff...
I would like to know wat u paid for it and if you have to pay monthly for it or anything like that.
So if you could fill me in that'd be great.

I bought it for 50$ because there was a store going out of business. The normal price for it is 100$ for the ps2 version or 40$ for the computer version. After you purchase the game, no matter what version, you pay 12.99 monthly and an additional 1$ per extra character. And if you do get the game pm me and let me know

I've heard very mediocre reviews about this game from many reliable sources, and hence don't reccommend it. Essentially it offers nothing that every other MMORPG doesn't, except perhaps a new set of graphics and different names for the same old "do more damage" or "heal more damage" skills.

I am an avid Final Fantasy fan.... playing the game since the early days of the Nintendo (try beating FF1 with four white mages ^^), and so on through the generations and consols. It would only stand to reason that I play FFXI as well... here is my information.
Server: Migardsmor
Name: Xerent
Race: Tarutaru
Level: 24blm/12whm
Hometown: Bastok
This is not the first MMORPG that I have played, but, it is the first MMORPG that I have put more than 48 play hours into.
One of the best things I find about this game is the sense of community that you feel. There are 4 powers in the world of Vana'Diel, the world which FFXI takes place on. The Natural, magic filled country of Windhurst, the Castle of SanDoria, rich with tradition, and the new capital of Bastok, technologically prime. The fourth power, the dutchy of Jueno remains neutral in the affairs of Vana'Diel. The other three countries are at peace, but are also locked in a race to become superior over each other. Players can take part in this race, competing to take over areas for thier nations good, thus resulting in cheaper prices, and more items to choose from, as well as many other benefits.
You can choose originally from 4 races (Hume (Jack-of-all-trades race) male, Hume female, Tarutaru male (Childlike magic race), Tarutaru female, Galka (Heavy tank) male, or Mithra (Agile cat-like race) Female, and 6 jobs (Whitemage, Blackmage, Redmage, Warrior, Thief, Monk) Something unique about this game is you can change whatever class you are at any time (although you have to start at level one) (example, I choose red mage, and level to 5. I decide I want to be a warrior instead, so I switch, and start over at 1. I level to 10. I want to be a red mage again, so I switch, and I pick up where I left off at lvl 5.) for an unlimited amount of times. There are also many trades available, such as fishing, goldsmiting, etc... you can switch between trades without any fear of losing skill due to atrophy.
Something that sets this game apart, though not wholly unique, is the lack of player vs. player. Instead, players are encouraged to form parites and alliances together, (something that almost MUST be done at later levels of the game) Player vs. player is planned for, however, this will take the form of sporting events between competing nations. (see the upcoming 'Ballista' event), and not player killing, which is something quite unique.
The graphics of FFXI are superior to any other MMORPG I have experienced. This is both wonderful, but disheartning to players that may not have the required hardware or gaming consol to experience this game. However, there are not many variations between player models, and even fewer between monster models. It is not rare, though uncommon to find a 'clone' of yourself while you play. And while you may experience many different types of goblins, each with thier own stats, abilities and even different names, there are only a few models for each, leading to deceptively confusing new players, who may attack a monster who may appear similar, only to find out it is indeed, much stronger than previous encounters.
The sound quality in FFXI is decent. Babbeling brooks and howling winds accompany thier respective enviromental locations. Cities, and the immediate areas surrounding also have thier own theme music, and chocobo tunes are played for a short while when you first mount one. Although it is nothing to rave about, I do not find the need to turn on my mp3 list before I launch the game, as I do with other games of a similar nature.
The pay-to-play fee of 12.95/mo is required to play this game, although Square-Enix does include a 1 month free trial with the purchase of the game. This works out to about $150 a year. However, I believe this is money well spent, as the servers are always up, except when notified by staff that they will be down for maitnence, which is about an hour/mo. New events / items / quests are being continuously added as well, so there is always something new to do.
The game play and control is also superior to other games of this style. The game can (and should) be controlled entirely from the keyboard. You can customize macro's to execute more complex commands with the push of a button, however, during times of high lag (battle scences with lots of models and effects to render), controls could be a bit more responsive.
Overall, I give this game an 8.5 out of 10. Will be a 9-9.5 when Ballista comes out, and is everything I think it will be. ^^.

I am thinking of getting it.....I have heard reviews that the lag isn't that bad with a 56k. Any truth to that people? I know you have to download a massive patch that takes like 8 hours to download on 56k, that bites, but sounds like the game is worth it.
good game but hell no am i paying $12 monthly =/
its real fast it does not take 8 hours for the updates withing 1-2 hours you would be on... great game worth the damn 12 dollars a month be a poor guy who cant afford 12 dollars a month and miss out, les lag for all of us rich people!

It most defintely worth the money Ach. I have played it several times at friend's places. But, I have a 56k because of the fact out here in my boondocks I am not getting Broadband yet, only Cable, which I don't want, I WANT BROADBAND, I am just crazy like that. So, how much lag can I be expecting on a 56k people?

Um, Cable is Broadband. Are you talking about DSL? Cable is faster and more reliable than DSL. Don't hold out.

I have DSL.....I think.

Yeah, don't pay much attention to the details of what I say. Most of the time, I am fairly confused :D. I want DSL because I can get it from MSN for about half the price of the Cable offered by Comcast. Comcast needs to burn in hell. Also, I don't have cable on the TV at my house because I hate all the random shit they put on TV, so the extra money Comcast charges since you get cable TV with their net service would just be a waste o' cash. Comcast isn't very realible out where I live, MSN is taking it's time to get here but it is much better. BUT NO ONE IS ANSWERING MY QUESTION. Do any of you people who play FF XI and are posting here even have 56k?

Interesting.....I don't think I have ever heard of the movie......hm. Have to go and look for it. Well, I will just take the reviewers word that the lag isn't too bad and take the plunge. I am cheap, so I don't want to buy a 50 dollar game I am going to stop playing within a few weeks because of lag problems. Oh well, happy trails for me hopefully eh :)?
