Hello everyone. I was off to my daily routine of games and I came across this guy who was rather - interesting.
I found our conversation a bit amusing so I decided to share it with everyone.

I agree that it is getting out of hand but "serious" - no. The most they can do is to hold a revolt against golds, if you come across one of them, use that fancy new thing called "ignore". The way I see it, this is just an evolution of the noobs playing the game.

Solution #1: Have it like a chess game with the clock things and if your opponent falls to far behind they get a warning and then lose...
Solution #2: If you take more then half you time on three consecutive turns the opposition gets to move one of your pieces for you (heh heh)
Solution #3: A scare message by DR... Doesn't have to be big and could be in or out of the game. Something that'll scare then and it doesn't have to be completely truthfull... Something like "We are recording all of the games from now on so any one who doesn't follow the code of conduct (they'll have to make on of those) and gets reported will be IP banned"
Solution #4: Change the game a little so after the half time mark your units become less effective as time passes so if they wait until the end then they can be killed easier. I'm not sure that'll work i dunno.
I'm not trying to be a smartarse here i dunno... you asked for some solutions. None are them are perfect by any stretch of the imagination but 1 and 3 aren't impossible to do.

Hey, when those $5.00 monthly payments start showing up in my bank account maybe I will sit down and come up with one. In the meantime you should redirect your question to the person who is raking those payments in.
I mean, isn't this the kind of thing your money ought to be going to fund? The time and effort to devise a solution to these problems which have been plaguing all players at all skill levels since the first time someone came up with the idea to "delay" their opponent to death?

As for duffman, those solutions are flawed as they damage game play when a player really needs the time to think. Except the warning of course which I doubt will have much of an effect. Thanks for the effort anyway, nice to see that the fact the you don't get 5$ in your account doesn't inhibit your thinking.
(I'm kidding Johnny you do well over what you need to do anyway, just thought you might have an idea because I really did try to think and couldn't come up with a plausible one.)

I was looking over at the "Suggestions and Bugs" section of the forum and read Aro23r's sticky.
I forgot which number it was, but it was about the ability to accept/refuse games.
Say for example, if a person you don't know and suspect a staller jumps on your table, you can refuse playing the person. It has potential...

Snarr - I don't think the clock idea would affect gameplay too much. I mean you would still have the full time to think of your move but if you are thinking a lot more then your opponent then you get a warning and then you lose the game.
As long as it gives a big enough gap so that if you are moving normally and your opponent if moving lightning fast you won't automatically lose but if you are moving normally and they are using their full time they will lose. I usually never use more then a quarter of my time so in my opinion it's possible.
I play the game and i don't pay (yet) so i think i owe it to help as much as i can.
Snarr
04-18-2004, 07:40 PM
Think about this, my opponent thinks for a minute - in that time what do I do? Yeah thats right plan my next move and as soon as he moves I think for 5 further seconds and do my move. Now again you guys both need about a minute to figure out what to do next, but your thinking will be done over his time so as soon as its your go you will move really fast.
This happens too often to be ignored.

hey, i think that whoever it was that mentioned a few suggestions was on to something with the 'timer vs. affectiveness of attacker' thing. this could also help with the many blocking flames that people, including myself, have surfaced. if you pay attention to the timer, it changes color as the time goes down. so, with my suggestion, it would happen like this: green timer - GREAT chance to hit from side, fair chance to hit from front, yellow timer - fair chance to hit from side, poor chance to hit from side, red timer - poor chance to hit from side, notta chance to hit from front. needs tweaking, but hey, all ideas do.
Snarr
04-18-2004, 07:50 PM
How would that affect people stalling? They would still stall a LONG LONG time even without hitting their opponent from the side. The only people who will be affect are the ones who actually need the time to think.

For some reason, I never fight these people. Actually I know the reason. I suspect their are a bunch of other people that never get into these situations either.
Not to condone such acts as described in this thread, but the worst to lose from grey acts of resistance are those that abuse greys for their individual point stockpiles.

I like this, for it displays something intangable about your thinking. Oh yeah, blind-to-the-obvious. If you can't see the difference then maybe your world is too grey for your own good.
Greys are kind of like cattle. There is alot of them, they aren't too bright, most are pretty ugly and they have been brought into existence only to be destroyed at the whims of those holding the cattle prods.
Just another reason why vegetarians are crazy. :)

These are the words of the grey... but he is stupid.
Golds, if they wanted to, could through it right back at you and wait out their turns if they wanted, he isn't doing anything that a gold can't do. And why would you want all the gold gone in the first place?! If you didn't have golds, after one reset, all clans would be gone, poof, greys would have no clans. And golds do have the right of where they play, since they're paying. In fact, greys should be the ones having to move to some other server since we get it for free. There should just be a trial server for greys, even though I don't like the idea of it, but it would be fair. That guy is a real idiot and, yea. Like I said, I'm grey...
Elentari
04-19-2004, 04:32 PM
so, with my suggestion, it would happen like this: green timer - GREAT chance to hit from side, fair chance to hit from front, yellow timer - fair chance to hit from side, poor chance to hit from side, red timer - poor chance to hit from side, notta chance to hit from front. needs tweaking, but hey, all ideas do.
This idea REALLY needs some tweaking...
First of all, I myself, don't take all that much time to move, but then again I hardly ever play... But my sister, on the other hand, is always playing, and she takes a lot of time to move and think of her move, but she doesn't do it to spite anyone (she's gold as well) she merely does it because she's good at the game. Thus it would be hardly fair to have her units lose effectiveness simply because she takes the time to think through what she's doing. So I think it would be terribly unfair. It would even affect me because I always like to talk to my opponent and thus it would be harder to do so if we have a lightning game because we don't want our units to lose effectiveness. I really wouldn't like it.
Second of all, as snarr stated, it really wouldn't bug those players who make those accounts simply to annoy golds. If I was planning on playing good golds simply to annoy them, I wouldn't use my account (I wouldn't want to lose all those stats), and my account could be banned.
There, I've had my say. :D

Also, if they ban your account, they do an IP ban which means even if your not using your "main" account you still can't play from your house anymore. I also agree with Omega, some new golds are worse than most greys.

Not true, examples being people like snarr, xyx, and many other golds when they were once grey.
You mean golds wont play me or my pals mint and int anymore.:( Though are ratings arent very high, we enjoy the challenge of a gold account so wecan test my skill with basic units for upcoming tourneys (if they ever happen). So if any golds get jumped by us, dont worry, we are not trying to cheat our way to a win, we are just trying to have a good game.:)

Anyway, worse comes worse, you as a gold, lets say, gets jumped by a grey who is in this "mission" and starts taking the turns out. Well, not much you can do there.. they can be using a local-internet connection; thus having different IP addresses for each comp.
Need a quick solution? Like someone said earlier, ignore greys who you "don't" know and challenge you, and NEVER sit alone on a table. If you are looking for a match, talk to the person in the lobby, and get arranged.

i'd say so, while GL and Army have many annoying greys, in Banff we aren't devoid of annoying noob golds. Here's my theory : GL and Army have the most accounts and the most annoying greys because - GL is default on the comp so some lazy greys go there, Army has a picture of a dragon - draws people. This is how you guys all end up with the annoying-as-hell greys. In banff, greys know their place, they respect golds (except for standouts/weirdos) or if they dont respect them as betters they at least they dont diss them 24/7.

No, I won't play in fear. I didn't go gold to have my rights taken away. I have the right to place my avatar on a board in peace. I still have the right to jump anyone be it gray or gold as I wish. I have the right to accept or decline challenges as I wish.
While I personally advocate against gray jumping I do believe that people who do it are perfectly in line. It may be morally wrong but it is not against the so called "law", while stalling is indeed against the "law". Furthermore, I was surprised at your twisted belief that placing your avatar on board and letting grays come to you is wrong. They are completely free to do as they will, you know, no one is coercing them to play you.

let's have a conversation about this. First - the answer is easy. Don't jump greys to build your own stats. If you want to play a grey just change your player configuration so you are at least fair. Go ahead and play on any server you want just let a grey choose you instead of you jumping a grey. I am all for the gold system and I will probably join soon. The makers of this game should be reimbursed for their troubles. Greys become golds because they enjoy the game. The game is not fun when you are contantly getting jumped by golds. No to depense of your typical argument. "greys can beat golds" I say so what, it still isn't the same game. Grey vs. Gold challenge can be a fun effort for both, but it should not happen in a "jump" the grey fashion. Just for records sake. I only play this way when I am truly jumped. I do not play this way when we both click on the playing floor at the same time. It is logical and it is fair. The makers of this game should be proud of themselves. I don't doubt that my ip address will soon be banned, but that is only a testimant of fear not logic. Please enter into the conversation. It can only make this game better. Lexpression

that really is lame, the point is to just stop golds jumping greys. As described on the banf server they have taken it way over board. As the person who started this I DO NOT condon nor encourage greys purposefully messing with the golds. It is only a retaliation to un fair practices. I am truly sorry for all golds who have had their time wasted by unfounded efforts. I am not sorry for all Golds who have had their time wasted when they deserve it.

Ok, having talked to Squiggly and having kept up with the thread (even dim and bottle going at it), I must say I think his actions are quite admirable. The one thing in this game that makes me cringe the most is seeing newbie greys sitting down at tables only to have a gold member join them on the table and the poor grey leave in 2 minutes, never to return. I must admit, I've played games where I sat down and a new grey account sat down against me. The first thing out of their mouth is always, 'where did you get those cool units/guys/pieces/some other noun that fits.' And I try to explain a bit of the game to them as we play. But from what I have seen (as most everyone here can confim), there are golds who are worried about getting their ratings up and therefore jump on new people to raise their ratings without fear. Squiggly has stated that he looks for those type of golds and gives them a fight that can scare them. And from what I see, he's got a good size clan around him now. Besides, a good gold will usually never have a problem with any grey, no matter ability.
I guess the words that really describe it is
I am not sorry for all Golds who have had their time wasted when they deserve it.

Now that I have read the entire thread, I change my mind. That's classless. The Gold Jumpers don't waste time. They play the game and play to win. You, on the other hand, are a waste of time, not even a good game. That's just wrong. When you said waste of time, I thought you meant had to play a grey, not wait your entire timer. I think you're pitiful.

I thought there was some hope for a logical conversation. Let's try and get back on track.
1) Golds should not jump Greys
2) Greys should not jump Golds
3) I do stall a game when I am jumped
4) I encourage others to stall a game when they are jumped
5) I don't encourage greys to jump golds
6) If a grey wants to play a gold great, but they should not stall
7) If a gold wants to play a grey, great - but they should attempt to play with similar firepower
That is my point and it makes sense. I am not arguing skill, I am not calling you names, I am just making a point and continuing conversation. Have a great day.

I'll change your list to what I believe is right.
1) Golds should not jump newbie greys
2) Greys should ask golds for games
3) Stalling at any time is unhonorable
4) Encouraging others to stall at any time is unhonorable
5) If a gold has a history of jumping, then greys jumping back is fully justified.
6) If a grey wants to play a gold, great. Bring your best.
7) If a gold wants to play a grey, great. Bring everything you have because the grey is going to bring their best in return.
That is what I believe your list should look like.

Your list is great and I fully support it. However there is no way for a grey to stop bad behavior. Golds can stop golds from jumping by playing them and beating them. Greys can only stop a gold from jumping by stalling. It is a sad truth, and maybe unhonorable, but it is the only option I see. Remember a newbie grey knows nothing about being part of these forums or having their complaint listened to.
p.s in fareness to banf I would like to keep this thread here. Lexpression

The only way you can try to tame a gold is to stall. Me, on the other hand, I beat them. My idea was originally just to keep their ratings down, but now that I have a 1260+ rating beating golds, I had to change my tactics. My goal now is to put the fear of grey back into them. The rest of my clan can keep their ratings honest.
By the way, I'm looking to expand to the other servers. Let me know if you are interested :D

Unfortunately it is too late for me. The developers of this game do not like that I am trying to make this an honest game. I do not want to cause them harm. They have created a great product. I wish I had the ability to play the way you do and have the same effect. I will no longer be playing this game. An unfortunate turn of events, because without dealing with the issue it will continue. I am a logical voice of reason, but sometime reason is ignored.

Anyway, I dont say much usally but... lexpression I can see your frustration with newb/grey jumping golds but I in no way share any of your so called "tactics" and anti-gold ethics. As squiggly said why do yuo submit to their supperiority by using stalling as your only defense. That is not teaching golds a lesson that is a waste of your and more importantly other peoples time (albeit grey jumping golds). And it appears that you are targetting not just grey hunting golds but all golds, respectable paying customers (ike snarr who said he was targeted by your "clan") who help make this game possible.
Most of these poor character golds jump because they lack skill and cannot beat their fellow golds, obviously they are not very skilled and any grey with enough skill can beat the majority. What you do is dishonorable, classes, and disrespectfull, what we do I like to imagine is slightly more honorable than your practices.
If your brain was too miniscule to comprhend what I just said, it would do your posts and additude justice. That being said I will make it as simple as possible
In my opinion you are immoral, classless ass hole
Seriously man give the game a chance with enough practice and effort you will be able to win against golds. Even if you get jumped by one or jump one yourself ask them for help teaching you some strategy. I don't know about the other servers but on Banff, yes on banff were the GREY-JUMPERS run rampant. We have even more honorable golds that are willing to teach you about the game. Many of them do not get any points from you and are losing their precious time but they still have the heart to help out a noob or a awful non-noob. They know it is a game, a test of ability and the only true way to get better is to push yourself and one way to do that is to make sure the competition is better. I am sure other clans out there work with-in their own to improve. I however was fortunate enough when I started to run into netjak before I was one of them and many of them took time out of their lives to help me learn. Even though I am not gold some of the JUMPERS have even played me. I did not fair well but I learned many flaws in my play. To the people that have helped me I simply say thank you, and that I shall do my best to keep improving so that some day when we play again you can say "Wow I remember when you sucked"
Enuff said go out there and try what is the worst that can happend (OMG I LOST) it would not be the first and I can guarantee it will not be the last.
